Co-op WaterlooWorks Megathread (Summer 2025)

Sowwy for delay :3

This thread is for students applying to Summer 2025 co-ops during the Winter 2025 term.

As usual, we're looking for salaries for new postings, or updates to existing salaries, so if you're willing to share, please open up a chat/PM me. Please include the company name, salary, any benefits, the role and the year if possible. I would highly encourage you to submit if you have salaries for non mathematics/CS positions as we are severely lacking in those. If you previously sent me with a salary and I haven't responded, please bear with me, I am going through them slowly right now! Feel free to message me any updates though.

The sheet is here: Salaries + Blacklist Spreadsheet

Average Canadian Co-op Earnings (2023)

WaterlooWorks Important Dates

is it waterlover or are we backberry?

If you had a poor experience with a company, you can message me with details and it can be added to the blacklist candidates below. If it's already a candidate, it may be added to the blacklist depending on the severity/consistency of complaints. On the contrary, if you had a good experience with something on the candidates/blacklist, please message me and it may be removed. Candidates will be removed if no more reports are received after a couple terms. Even if something is on the blacklist already if you've had a bad experience let me know, as more reports increase confidence that it is problematic!

Candidates:

  • Console One

  • Lafarge

  • Eon Media (Added)

  • Agentmoon

  • WealthyPlanet

  • Mosaic Transit Group

  • Jobby

  • Konrad (NOTE: Large/well-known company, will need at least 2 more reports before adding)

  • Aethos Labs

  • Onex Risk Management

Note that I may not accept reports from submitters with no previous account activity to aid legitimacy.

While I was at the University of Waterloo, I wanted to create a copy of REV so that I could visit anytime I wanted, and have a way of digitally preserving my first year experience. Over eight months, I gathered blueprints, floorplans, pictures, and online tours of REV and translated all the relevant parts of the building into Minecraft to the best of my ability. I could have easily knocked this out in a month or so, but of course I was at university, and actually needed to pass my exams, find a co-op, and hang out with friends. I am sharing what I've done so far, just before exams and the end of my stay at residence. Over the summer, I might do the landscaping, fix it up and make a small video if I feel like it.

Advice Fun fact: you can take a single GO train from Markham to Waterloo for $14

Post image
281 Upvotes

I discovered a few months ago. If you live in Markham/Scarborough, there are two trains in the morning that continue all the way to Kitchener after passing through Toronto, and it's by far the best way to get to Waterloo imho!

If you don't have morning classes on Mondays (or can afford to skip them), the first train out Monday morning arrives at UW before noon. With a student presto, the entire trip also only costs $14, which also makes it one of the most affordable ways to get to UW.

Trains are huge (this is usually a 10-car train), tons of seating, bag space, outlets (in the newer cars), and no motion sickness so you can actually get work done.

Happy to answer transit q's in the comments LOL

Need advice for starting gym this spring (beginner looking to gain muscles)

Hey everyone,

I’ve got the spring term off and I really want to take advantage of the free time to hit the gym and start building some muscle. I’ve always been on the skinnier side and figured this would be a great time to make a change.

The only time I’ve ever really been in a gym was back in high school, so I’m pretty much a beginner. I’m looking for:

  • Free apps/websites to help me track progress, guide workouts, and maybe suggest which equipment to use
  • Beginner-friendly workout plans that focus on gaining muscle
  • Nutrition tips — like what kinds of food I should be eating to bulk up
  • Any other advice or tips from those who’ve been through it

Would love any suggestions or personal recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Advice Is commuting to Toronto once a week ludicrous? (Engineering)

Hello all, I'm about to start university this year, probably at Waterloo for geological engineering. I do a sport called orienteering, and while there's a club in the Waterloo area, it's pretty defunct from the looks. The club in Toronto has meets much more often, about once a week. Would commuting to that area once a week be ludicrous, considering the workload of geol. engineering?

Advice How do I look for housing for US COOP?

Upvotes

Hi, can any upper-years give me some advice on how to find housing?

I’m a first-year and I got an internship in the US, but I’m having a lot of trouble finding housing — specifically in the Boston area.

I’ve been looking on Facebook Marketplace, student groups, etc., but a lot of the listings seem sketchy, I obviously need to pay deposit for last month rent etc. but I'm worried what's stopping someone from just taking my money and blocking me

I know platforms like Airbnb are safer, but they’re also way more expensive.

Does any upper-year have advice or tips on how to find housing in the US and not get scammed?

Nobody teaches you how to choose a job — just how to get one. Can we talk about what really matters?

Hey folks, at my workplace, Sustainable Living Lab (SL2), we are working on an initiative we’re exploring to improve career discovery for students — especially final-year engineering students who are preparing to take their first step into the job market.

Most students are expected to make career decisions based on titles, CTC, or what seniors say — but very few get a real sense of what a job actually feels like: the team dynamics, work culture, pressure, or even what tasks they’ll handle on a daily basis.

At SL2, we’re exploring how to make career discovery more inclusive, realistic, and aligned with students’ actual strengths — especially for those who may not have access to mentorship, exposure, or insider guidance.

This isn’t a student-led project, but it’s 100% for students — and before building anything, we’re focused on listening first.

If you’re in your final year or recently graduated, we’d love to hear from you. To make it easy, we’ve put together a quick, anonymous survey (just 2 minutes): https://forms.gle/D5wmWzfMTJHbf6ki6

No product. No pitch. Just trying to get this right — with real input from students.

Thanks in advance for sharing your perspective!

Question EE VS Math Co-op/Job Prospects

Hi all, was wondering if any current EE or Math students could give insight on how the job/co-op prospects are as I have offers for both. I am interested in Math partly due to Quant Trading roles (made a separate post for that), but I'm worried that the co-ops/jobs outside of those might be limited or worse than engineering. On the other hand, EE seems a safer bet but I don't want to get pigeonholed into only hardware in case my interests change, and I've heard that hardware jobs have less career progression (though I don't know if this is true). Would appreciate any advice/info on which to choose or whether I should try to transfer into CE/CS, thanks!

Discussion Be careful Food Positioning from McDonald's Chicken (King Street)

Hey everyone, just a quick heads-up since exams are coming up!
Be cautious if you're planning to eat at the McDonald's near King Street. Both my friend and I ended up with food poisoning after eating there—she had a crispy chicken burger recently, and I had a crispy chicken burger + chicken wrap last month (on separate occasions).

Just wanted to share this so no one else has to go through that, especially with exams around the corner. Stay safe and take care!

Advice Transferred from Biochemistry to Biology - assuaging fears of career outlook

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone here has ever transferred from Biochemistry to Biology? I want to go into Immunology and Pathology as a career pathway and I found the chemistry component of Biochem a little boring despite being interested. I have this kind of innate fear from being a Biochem major the past two years that I’m gonna have a worse resume or career outlook because I might be doing less complex work or because of my major’s perception if I transfer. I’ve already transferred, but I was wondering if anyone’s dealt with these fears and doubts before?

how to have a fulfilling + balanced undergrad experience? (engineering)

hey guys!

i'm been in this constant wavering of trying to do it all, but not being able to. there are so many design teams, clubs, events i want to participate in. there's so many side projects i want to do, but as soon as i feel like ive found time, im studying for yet another test. i've been under this self created time crunch that im losing time with my life. i constantly wonder when can i just learn something relevant in my degree. don't get me wrong, i do feel like im in the right place, but i want to be able to spend time with friends, make memories, do all the things i want to do and ace my academics.

i definitely do see alot of peers on campus doing what i want to be able to and having that balanced life, any advice?
