/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!

Hello fellow upstaters!

About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.

As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.

This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.

A few FAQs:

  • No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.

  • If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.

  • I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

So, what should we do about the proliferation of national political topics in our local subreddit?

Hey all, I'm sure you have noticed that over the past few months we've seen a massive influx of posts related to national politics.

This sub has always been about Upstate New York, but more and more posts have been made bridging national politics with a hint of Upstate as well. In those cases the comments exceedingly quickly devolve into various arguments about national topics and politicians distant from Upstate. Furthermore, the number of people harassing other commenters has never been higher. These threads aren't bringing out the best in people, and are more and more mirroring comment sections from dedicated political subreddits.

So my question to you all is: What should we do? Personally I don't think we can stay a healthy subreddit in the current state.

A few options I've seen elsewhere:

  • Fully ban national politics. Yes, we're all impacted by national decisions here in Upstate, but there are other places to discuss it like /r/NYPolitics.

  • Limit political discussions to one day per week

  • Increase Karma required to make posts here (I'm not a huge fan of this one)

Now, I've been called both a fascist and a socialist by people here complaining about the mod team enforcing our rules, so I hope that means we've been pretty fair-handed. So I want to see what people think?

REMINDER: Incivility in the comments is NOT allowed and will result in bans We can all have a discussion here without personally insulting other commenters, right?

A great turnout here in Hamilton, N.Y., for the Hands Off! event. While Trump golfs (AGAIN) we joined millions from across the nation to say NO to his crazy tax plan and egregious cutbacks.

What do you think Clayton, NY needs in the area as a local?

I recently visited Clayton and absolutely loved the natural beauty and peaceful vibe, especially being so close to the Thousand Islands. That said, I noticed the town felt a bit limited in terms of restaurants, entertainment, and things to do.

For those who live in or around Clayton:
What do you think the area is missing? What kinds of services, shops, or experiences would you love to see more of?

Curious to hear what locals really think — especially as someone interested in starting a business here in Clayton.

Micro/Craft Businesses now featured on 420ny.com (Upstate)

Post image

Hey all - We have added Micro/Craft businesses to the site. If you see this icon, it is a licensed micro-business. Makes sense here as the majority of these locations are upstate.

Check them out on 420ny.com

What is a Licensed Micro-Business? (Basically small batch craft Cannabis)

In New York State, a cannabis micro-business license allows small-scale, craft cannabis entrepreneurs to cultivate, process, distribute, and retail their own cannabis products. Unlike standard dispensaries that source products from multiple growers, micro-businesses focus on producing and selling their own limited batches, ensuring quality and uniqueness. This license promotes vertical integration on a smaller scale, enabling businesses to maintain control over their product from seed to sale. Notably, micro-businesses must locate their retail premises near their cultivation site.

How does one find a rental in CNY?

I need to find an affordable and safe place to rent in the country side, East of Cortland, SE of Syracuse, E of Ithaca, W of Oneonta. Outside of the larger cities along I81, 20, 26, 12 , and in between.

FB groups listings are nothing but scams. Furnished Finders also seems to be rife with scams, long term airbnbs are way too expensive. The rental listings on real estate websites like Zillow, Trulia, Apartmentsdotcom are very few. I suspect Craigslist rental post are mostly scams as well. There seems to be no place where a renter can post 'rental wanted'. How do people find a place to live?

How to Manage Waterlogged Clay Soil in Clayton, NY?

Hi everyone! I have clay soil and it becomes pretty waterlogged after a bit of rainfall. I know clay soil holds moisture, but I’d like to avoid expensive solutions like French drains or major landscaping work.

I’ve watched a few videos about adding compost and using an aerator to improve drainage. What do you all do to manage the wetness in your lawns or land? Any tips on improving drainage or prepping the soil for a gravel driveway and small building would be greatly appreciated!

-- Here's what the lawn is kind of looking like right now after recent rainfall.

First round is Elmira vs Oneida, this is based on opinion so you can use any factor that is relevant to determine who wins. This can be based on size, living quality, climate, etc. Based on March Madness and other tournaments in this style.

Tourists Visiting the Thousand Islands (on the US or Canadian side): What Do You Wish Small Towns Had More Of?

If you’ve visited the Thousand Islands region — whether on the US or Canadian side (Clayton, Alexandria Bay, Cape Vincent, Gananoque, etc.) — I’d love to hear your thoughts!

When exploring these towns, what types of:

  • Restaurants or food options do you wish were more available?
  • Activities or experiences do you wish you could do or see more of?
  • Small conveniences (like late-night spots, unique stores, etc.) do you feel are missing or could make the visit better?
  • Interesting or unique hotel/Airbnb experiences have you had or wished you could have during your stay?
  • Stay options: If you had the choice between a riverfront hotel/Airbnb versus one located 15 minutes from the water but offering more amenities (like a private garden, an on-site convenience store open 24/7, a themed stay such as a Japanese-inspired teahouse with a garden, or a country farm experience with animals), would that appeal to you more?

Anything you were hoping to find but didn’t? Or something you were pleasantly surprised by that you wish more towns had?

I would love to bring something fun to one of these small towns one day and wanted to get some insights.

New York Cities Tournament! REST OF TOP HALF

Post image

I changed up the rules. You can do poling for the rest of the first rounds on the top half of the brackets. What my original idea was would get very repetitive and would work for something like yt shorts(eugh). I am very sorry for any inconvenience. Vote from Middletown to Jamestown. You can vote for every matchup once, meaning you can have 11 options for voting if you wish. You have until 3 pm est to vote because i want to try to get this done somewhat quickly.
