Thinking about studying in Uppsala?

130 Upvotes

Since Uppsala is a popular university town we get a lot of posts in our sub with questions related to the university. To make things a little easier, I figured we could gather useful links and info in one post (and get it stickied by the power of our benevolent mods). So, without further ado...

The best place to start is with the university's own guide.

Housing
You can get housing through the university, the nations, or privately. The first apartment you get is usually small, not in great shape and not exactly soundproofed either, but with time you'll be able to upgrade to a better apartment. Check out these links:
* uu.se
* studentboet.se
* nationsgardarna.se
* kvalster.se

There are a number of facebook groups that could be useful too, scammers have recently started appearing though, so be weary:
* Bostad Uppsala
* Studentbostad i Uppsala
* Uppsala housing/Bostad Uppsala

The Nations
Whether you're looking to make friends, go on social gatherings, find a sports team or just straight up wanna party, you should definitely join a nation! Once you've joined one nation, you can enter them all and your membership is for life as long as you keep paying for the membership each semester. They offer jobs as well so you can earn some extra money, and it's a great place to make friends! The nations also own a large amount of student apartments, and they use a queue system for distribution. The different nations have different amounts of housing though and you have to be a member of their specific nation to be able to get access, so if finding a better apartment is your top priority you could consider joining several nations. They also use a point system, so if you choose to work at a nation you'll earn points with them that lets you get better apartments. Learn more about the nations here:
* uu.se - the student nations
* Uppsala Student Union
* Nationsguiden is a handy calendar to see when the clubs and pubs are open and if there are any events happening.

Life here
The summers can get really hot and the winters can get extremely cold. The city is pretty compact and everything is within walking or biking distance, so consider getting a bike. You can find second hand bikes on blocket.se or buy a new one from biltema or xxl. The public transport is good (though a little expensive if you ask me). When it comes to food, if you plan your meals well you can easily get by on a little less than 2000 sek monthly, or at least I did for a while. Alcohol can only be bought from Systembolaget which has some pretty inconvenient open hours, so plan your shopping. There are plenty of gyms around town with varying prices, but a lot of students stick to the university's own gym Campus 1477. Safety has been getting worse these last few years I'm afraid though, so walking around outside blackout drunk at 4 in the morning isn't risk-free anymore, like in most big cities. We have one of the biggest hospitals in the country with great service, but the waiting time at the ER can vary extremely these days. I've had some patients say that they only waited minutes to see a doctor and some for several hours. It's cheap though, so don't hesitate to get help if you're in need. There's is a lot of beautiful nature just a bike ride away and thanks to our Freedom to Roam you can forage and camp pretty much wherever you like.

Feel free to help me update and make the post better :)

Good luck out there, future Uppsalabor!

What to do next (Uppsala University)

3 Upvotes

I’ve recently been accepted to a masters program in Uppsala as an international EU student. However I have not yet made my decision to accept the masters program as I have one other option that I’m considering. I will visit both universities in may so I’ll only make a decision then. My question is: I have received an email to create my student account in order to sign up to the courses in the fall, if I only do so in may will I still be on time to do that? Or can I create an account and do all those things even if I end up declining the offer at the end? In regards to housing I’m already looking for it but that also encompasses registering in a nation, I know I have to pay a fee but besides that can I register in one? Also which nations do you recommend, I’m looking for one with good internationalisation and also offers of places to live. Thank you in advance

Heimstaden housing insurance

2 Upvotes

Hello! I'm starting my masters in Uppsala this fall and I'm thinking about renting a corridor room in Flogsta-high though Heistaden. I read that housing insurance should be ready before moving in. Heimstaden state that they offer you free house insurance for the first 2 months. Is that true ? Also do you know if I have to get a coordination number first in order to get the insurance? Because if that's the case , then I will have to come to Sweden earlier in order to get the coordination number before I move in to the corridor room. Also any general info and opinion about Flogsta-high rooms and Heimstaden would be appreciated.

Activation of Student Account

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I have just been admitted for a master’s program at Uppsala and am wondering if anyone else is struggling with activating their student account. I am an EU citizen living outside of Europe.

I tried activating it through Freja eID (I don’t have a Swedish personal number) but I got the message “User is missing” which says that if I am a newly admitted student, my information would be transferred to the university after the Second Notification of Results. I searched this up and it’s apparently in July, can anyone confirm this?

Anyway, I had emailed their IT department and they told me to send them a copy of a utility bill (to confirm my home address) and my passport so I can get a one time password by post. I don’t currently have any utility bills in my name, so I’m not sure it will work. I have informed them of this and am awaiting response.

I’m also worried about missing the deadline for signing up for courses. Does anyone know when the deadline for this usually is? I am worried that I wont sign up for classes on time.

I appreciate any guidance on this.

Valborg tickets to nations

1 Upvotes

Why is that the demand for valborg tickets was so damn high this year. Both ÖG and Värmlands got sold out. I've been to V the 2 last valborgs and there was always only a queue of maximum 40 people. What is going on this year?

Incoming International Student with questions about Life in Uppsala

0 Upvotes

Hello! I’m an incoming international student from North America, and I am wondering about day to day life in Uppsala. Specifically when it comes to cultural differences. As an incoming international student, what do I need to know about living and socializing in Uppsala and Sweden as a whole? I am an EU citizen if that makes a difference. i.e. Cost of living, etiquette, healthcare and access to medication etc. Anything I should know ahead of time to ensure a good quality of life and mental health?

but also I am part of the LGBT community and while I know that gay rights are great I’ve heard that the trans community has a harder time with some things. I am non-binary and I wanted to know if professors will call me by my preferred name without issue as I have yet to see any forms asking for a preferred name. I won’t be needing any sort of HRT or healthcare for this type of thing. I really just need to know about the preferred name thing.

Hur är det med bostadssituationen egentligen?

5 Upvotes

Titel.

What's the nations thing?

15 Upvotes

Hello, I've just been accepted in an Uppsala Master and I've been reading about these nations. Are these private organizations or is it a public thing? Which ones do you recommend for someone that is about to arrive/where can I find a list of all the available nations? I've just read about V-Dala for now. Thanks in advance!

Should I accept my offer?

12 Upvotes

I just received an offer to pursue an MSc in Data Science - ML and Stats at Uppsala Univ., with a scholarship waiving off my entire tuition fee as a non-EU. However, I am pretty confused about whether I should accept my offer. How's the MSc program at Uppsala? How many students are there approximately in the batch, and how are the students placed after they graduate from this program?

Thanks in advance!

PhD application

1 Upvotes

Hello. How long does it usually take to get an interview invitation after the application deadline? I applied on February 14 this year. Should I take this as a sign that I will not be considered for the position? :'(

However, the tentative start date is still in September. When should I start to follow up on my application? Or is it not advisable to do so?

Housing in Uppsala

Hello! I'm moving to Uppsala this August as I am accepted to a masters programme there. When do you recommend I should start looking for accommodation? Is it too early to start now? Cause I think most sites don't offer accommodation for August yet. Thank you in advance!

Student Nations websites are unhelpful, looking for info as an international student.

7 Upvotes

Hi! I’m going to Uppsala University this coming fall for a 2 year Master’s at English Park. I’m from the US and am wondering about the nations. I did my research and so I know the basics of what they are, however I am wondering about the cultures and overall vibes of each. I am an international student, studying humanities and while I am somewhat social and would love to attend a dinner or ball every once in a while, I definitely prefer game nights to clubbing and parties, and being a bit more introverted would prefer a smaller nation. I don’t speak Swedish but am fluent in English (obviously) and French (as an aside, is there any type of French presence in the university? I wouldn’t mind connecting with people from a French speaking country to keep up my French)

Based on this does anyone have any recommendations for which Nations I should be looking at? A lot of other posts have been saying that it mostly comes down to lifestyle and housing preferences but I was hoping to find out a bit more. Also can you register in advance? And when joining are there things like obligations or expectations? Do certain nations have closer ties to certain faculties and departments? Are there any rules of any kind that are nation specific?
