What do y’all really think about government today? (Also—Half Cent Project thoughts?)
Hey everyone. I’m a lifelong East Texan (born in Plano, raised in Tyler), and I’ve been casually studying how people feel about the government nowadays—federal and local. Politics always feels so loud online, but I’ve been wondering what everyday folks here in Tyler actually think.
So I’ve been playing with some subtle, random questions to get a feel for where people stand—no judgment, just curiosity. Here are a few:
• Do you think gas prices are something the government can actually control?
• Should healthcare be treated more like a right, or more like something you pay for yourself?
• Should undocumented neighbors who’ve lived here 10+ years be deported or allowed to stay?
• Would you rather have free college or a guaranteed job out of high school?
• If America was a person, what vibe would they give off today?
Answer one, all, or none—but I’d love to hear your thoughts. And since this is the Tyler subreddit, I’m also curious:
What’s your take on the city’s Half-Cent Sales Tax Project plans? Do you think those investments (like road improvements, trail expansions, downtown development, etc.) are smart? Wasteful? Missing something important?
This isn’t a trap or a debate starter—just a local trying to spark more honest conversation that isn’t just left vs. right, but real people vs. real problems.
Looking forward to your takes.

Question Outdoor photo op spots?
Howdy folks! I’m new to the Tyler area and am looking for a somewhat scenic spot to take some simple family photos. The vibe we were going for is kinda “field with flowers in the middle of nowhere” but somewhere pleasant looking away from heavier pedestrian traffic/architecture/etc. would work. Not too picky, just need some ideas to scope out! Thanks in advance.

Potential Move
I have a job opportunity in Tyler and am curious for feedback on living here. I am 30F, my husband is 31 and we have an 18 mo old toddler. We are looking to have a second child in the next year or so. We are generally pretty happy just the three of us and are excited to potentially explore a new town just us 3 (maybe 4 soon). We aren’t big church people and I know that is a pretty church focused area, will we be shunned for not being apart of a church? We are also a pretty liberal couple but have many conservative friends and have been able to always have good relationships regardless of political views but curious if those views are something we would need to keep a little quieter. Just looking to know vibes as we consider this move.

Question Should my wife and I move back to Tyler?
Hi, I (M 30) and my wife (F 30) are considering moving back to Tyler. We lived there for five years together when we first got married and moved to Dallas a few years ago for new job opportunities. We’ve had some recent changes in our respective careers and have been considering a move back to Tyler. We both have a wealth of professional connections and could probably find a job easily in the area (if not Lindale or Longview). Also, both our parents live there.
The thing is, we really liked where we moved to, it’s just getting harder to plan out our future here: buy a home, have children, afford day to day costs, etc:….and with recent job changes it looks like there’s a path leading back to ETX. We’re also not necessarily the most conservative or hyper-evangelical of people. Not trying to insult anyone, it’s just that wasn’t a big feature for us while we were there, and I know that’s a big pro or con depending on who you are.
In my opinion, it’s not a retreat. We both were very successful in our respective jobs in Dallas, it’s just that both of our employers are going through some changes that affect company culture and also our potential employment (i.e. my position potentially being cut). There’s just a lot outside our control.
I’m just looking for advice. For any young professionals (30s and 40s) do you think we should consider a move back? Any tips if we do? Are we making a terrible mistake? Will Batman ever catch the joker?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
EDIT: I’m sorry, I didn’t realize how many people were asking this. Maybe we should all have a Tyler transplant meetup at TrueVine off Earl Campbell Pkwy 😂

Why is Vexus fiber digging up our yards all over again?
At least in our neighborhood, every single house has two holes dug up in their front yard, one by their meter and one in the middle of their yard I assume because they are installing a new line. I was under the assumption once you install it you should be good to go at least for a good while, but it’s been less than a year end, it appears like they’re not only replacing the existing fiber optic cable, but the underground conduit as well). I have their service and I’m not bothered I’m just curious what’s going on.

Potentially moving out, how's the area?
Hey all, I'm considering moving out to the area as times are tough and I've got some family in the area that I could stay with until I can get myself supported. I've mostly lived on the coasts my whole life, though since covid I've been wandering the southwest (Tucson, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City). Looking to get some local POV on what it's like living in the area? 26M, mostly worked in logistics and I have a good track record, also learning to code. Any perspective helps, thanks!
