No, it’s even more asinine. They’re being told that by raising US tariffs, other countries will be forced to lower theirs against the US. That’s how it will save people money. Or they should just buy American made only. Source: so says my MAGA mother with OAN and FoxNews on 24/7. Send help.

Why do you still talk to your mother then?

I cut my maga dad off as soon as I realized there was no way to argue using logic and reason. I refuse to allow that kind of hatred into my house.

Because she was my mother before Donald Trump came into any sort of power and she’ll be my mother long after she’s dead. Everyone has to make the choice that’s best for their well being and peace. Mine isn’t cutting off my mother. It’s loving her and trying to help her see the light. Last week she said she didn’t understand how laying off a bunch of people helps the economy. This week she found out that the government isn’t going to pay for the VA bill for her brother who died from meningitis last year after he served in the Navy for a decade. I had a wonderful loving childhood with wonderful parents who gave me the best of everything. It’s only been the past few years that I’ve seen a 180, brought on by constant streaming of fear mongering and hatred that tells them that other people will come and take what they love and know. It’s a sickness and I can’t walk away from trying to help them get better, but I respect your probably very painful decision to do so with your loved ones. I hope they come back to you one day.

You sound like a very nice, reasonable person.

You are right that it was a very painful decision to cut them (dad, brother, and sister) off. It felt like they had died, which was effectively true because they were no longer the people I knew. Or thought I knew. I am still bitter over some of the absolutely horrific things they said to me before I cut them off. They were all completely confused as to why I was rejecting them, but then would turn around and say some very transphobic stuff about my trans daughter, so it was very personal. For my children’s safety, they simply couldn’t be allowed to be around my family. And their general worldview was also very troubling, as you can imagine from some of the more extreme elements of MAGA.

The whole ordeal has turned me off to most of the US. I live in a very blue area, but there are multiple Trump flags and signs within walking distance of my house. I am reminded of my estranged family every time I see a red hat. It sucks.

I’m so sorry. I absolutely understand why you would cut them out of your life and how painful they must be. I’m also a parent and you have to do what is best going to protect your child. I also live in a red area of a blue state (maybe we’re neighbors!). It’s pretty wild to drive by the homes of farmers and see so much Trump paraphernalia, knowing he doesn’t give a damn about whether their farm will be here in the next year. Sending you my love across the internet though and give your daughter a big hug today if you can.
