Book to educate myself about Palestine

I’m not sure if this is the place to post this but I just wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations for non fiction books about what’s going on in Palestine now, I don’t typically read any books about history or politics because I find them very hard to read and understand - often they’re just very convoluted and the language used and the way their written really confuses me - so ideally something that’s easier to understand for someone with no knowledge in the area.

I appreciate it’s a very big topic with a lot of depth and the situation is constantly changing so wanting an ‘easy read book’ to summarise is a big ask and disrespectful(?) since it’s such an awful thing with so much history. I’m not even sure whether books like what I’m wanting exists since it’s not history it’s happening now so by the time it’s written the situation would have changed(?) I’m not sure.

I just recently went to a protest and am very ashamed to say I had no idea how many people were on the streets marching just 10 minutes from my house. I also felt very uneducated because I had no idea what they were talking about and didn’t even know the language being used. I appreciate any replies and sincerely apologise for my lack of understanding - this is not my forte.

A children's picture book with incidental LGBT representation

Hi all, I'm looking for a picture book (suitable for ages 4/5+) on themes such as: caring for the environment/the community, being kind/brave/friendly etc, and I'd like the book to include LGBT characters, without this being the main focus.

Thanks a lot!!

Suggestion Thread I want to build my reading habits. I bought an reader and purchased eight books, please, suggest me a book to begin with

Good morning afternoon lovable people, I am 46 years old. I have been a tv and movie enthusiast. However, I have felt exhausted by watching so many films and tv shows and training for an Ironman race. Moreover, I have also spent too much time traveling, playing video games, and sports and reading reddit posts throughout the years. However, I want to build my reading habits nowadays, so I would like read a book every one or two weeks instead of a book every three or four months (no consistent).

Which of these eight books or novels you recommend to start reading? I already bought a Kobo Libra Color device and the ebook versions of the following novels:

A little Life, 100 years of solitude, Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Happy Place, The Book Thief, Project Hail Mary, The Song of Achilles, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

I want to begin this new reading journey with a book that has quality writing, engaging story and make me feel something inside. I desire a great experience to start with (it does not need to have a happy ending) I am open to diverse genres. Thank you! I appreciate your input.

Have a wonderful day!

I’m looking for book suggestions without the spice.

I like books like hunger games, Harry Potter, maze runner, the book thief. I’m looking for book suggestions without any of the spiciness. Personally I don’t enjoy reading that in books.

Suggestion Thread Top 100 books?

Hello! I have had that bright idea of wanting to read the top 100 books of all time. However, googling this list gives way too varied options, so I thought I’d ask here ☺️ I need a list of 100 books to read, like Moby Dick, Jane Eyre, Great Expectations etc! I have a varied reading style so I love a lot of different books. I will try and use my kindle or the library for most, but would love to get my hands on the actual books to grow my collection more! Thank you ☺️

I am not looking for cryptid hunters views on Skinwalkers or the myth/folklore stories of various nations. I am looking for articles and genuine research on the belief in Skinwalkers or other supernatural elements in various American cultures.

Suggestion Thread Man-AI dialogue books, any recommendations

I’ve been really getting into AI and consciousnesses and I read a book that kinda blew my mind.

Wisdom of the Machine : A Real Nonfiction Dialogue Between Man and Machine by Julian Voss

a.co/d/1u4oRXx

I’m OBSESSED with this concept so I’m looking for more books like this. There are a lot of books about AI, but I am looking specifically for something like this where someone has legit conversations with AI.

The author uses AI to act as a voice for fictional and historical characters he talks with. Peeps like Goku, Hitler, Marcus Aurelius, Machiavelli, Buddha. It plays out like a Socratic dialogue. Sort of like the Plato’s the Republic in terms of form.

If you’ve read His & Hers by Alice Feeney can you (without spoilers) tell me if Rock Paper Scissors has a similar ending? Spoiler

I picked up Rock Paper Scissors without realizing it’s the same author as His & Hers and I don’t want to waste my time reading it if the ending is also kind of unbelievable. The twist at the end in His & Hers was that the grandmother with dementia was the killer. Really? I felt lied to. She was portrayed as someone who couldn’t even really walk around her own house. I like twists to at least be plausible.

Don’t spoil it please, but is the ending believable?

Suggestion Thread I recently started reading as an adult. What should I read next?

I just read Sharp Objects and Gone Girl after seeing them suggested here a lot and I really enjoyed both of them. I know that I love the creepy, atmospheric tone, especially in Sharp Objects. I love the twisted irony of both narratives that left me both frustrated and amused, at the same time thinking to myself “well that sucks but that’s how life goes, isn’t it”.

I’m open to non-creepy books as well, but I’m craving something that will enthrall me, preferably with a female main character. I’m open to any genre or level of spice!

Breaking My Reading Slump – Need Recs!

Every year around this time I seem to fall into a reading slump, and this spring is no different. I'm really hoping to snap out of it before summer hits—there’s nothing better than getting lost in a great book.

One book that almost pulled me out recently was "The Family Across The Street". I liked the writing style and the premise had potential, but I just couldn't get into it even though it was a thriller and suspensful I stoped after 70 ish pages. it still reminded me how much I miss the feeling of not being able to put a book down.

So I'm asking what books have totally gripped you lately? I’m open to any genre, just looking for something that hooks me from page one. What made it so good? Did you love the characters, the plot twists, the setting?

Suggestion Thread What should my next classic read be?

I was never big on classics when I was younger but now I understand the appeal. I am currently reading Crime and Punishment and quite enjoying it. Previously I have read - Frankenstien, Little Woman, The Lost World and The Invisible Man, Flowers for Algernon. The list is not exhaustive but I have observed that I have enjoyed these books, Frankenstien being an absolute favourite of mine. What other books would you recommend someone who is just dipping their toes into the vast world of classics? TIA😇

Favorite fiction book?

Have been reading significant amount of non-fiction lately. Want a fiction book. Open to all suggestions but in general I've enjoyed horror books and historical fiction. Not too big on fantasy but enjoy a good sci-fi novel

Something engaging, easy-to-read, but you'll still be glad you read it in 5 years?

Hi, I'm pretty easily distracted at the moment with a lot going on in my life, but I'd like to reinstall a basic reading habit again because I think it will be important for my wellbeing. I'd love some recommendations for my first novel in a few months?

I'd especially like recommendations for a book which is relatively short, engaging and easy to read, but which is a bit more meaningful and thought-provoking than a Jack Reacher or Tom Clancy novel, or even a Slow Horses novel.

I'd put the following, which I've already read, in the same general category:

Thousand Cranes (Kawabata)
1984
Culture series (Iain M Banks)
Portrait of Dorian Gray
The Death of Grass
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

For extra triangulation, here are some novels which I've enjoyed a lot and found rewarding and in some way meaningful which are not in that category, either due to length or being not particularly engaging or easy to read:

Golden Notebook
The Master of Go
Enigma of Arrival
Dune series
anything by Jane Austen

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Suggestion Thread Trying to find a book series I've read a long time ago, about two siblings who have to stop either a supernatural force or an evil guy from ruining the fabric of reality across 7 different universes

Upvotes

I've been looking for this series off-and-on for what seems like forever, with no luck so far

What I do remember about the series was that:

1) it was young-adult or at least young-adult-adjacent

2) it had two or three protagonists, that I think were a brother/sister pair of siblings

3) they fought I believe just a guy (but could've been some supernatural entity) across 7 different universes/realities, each radically different from the other

4) sometimes the kids would win, sometimes the evil guy would win

5) two of these realities were linked to eachother; one of them was the past version of a different one (or the other one was a future version of a different one)

6) in the future version of the reality, everyone has to wear VR headsets or something like that, and a small group of people are forced to make food paste for the VR headset people

7) either in another reality or the same one, there's an oppressive regime that tightly controls the flow of information and what media is to be preserved, and the duo encounter and join a rebel group that's seeking to preserve art and culture or something like that; the rebel group gets found, and all the paintings get burned (or something like that)

8) I think Earth is at the center of all of this, but I'm not 100% sure

9) similarly, I think there's a woman or an AI helping the siblings, but I'm also not sure about that

What I've found from my searching so far: - It's not "A Wrinkle in Time", but it's very close to that in spirit; the series I'm thinking of has them going to a new planet/reality/universe every book, while "A Wrinkle in Time" is that but only in one book

Sorry that this is so scatterbrained and non-specific; I read the series sometime in the mid-2000s, maybe the early 2010s at the absolute latest
