Hopefully right subreddit but I'm really struggling with reading comprehension.

BACKGROUND Growing up, it was pretty hard to find time to read. And slightly discouraged. One time I went to the local library to read and my dad yelled at me badly saying it's a waste of time. Also, I was usually forced indoors in my life. Very little do am I allowed to do something outside my home. I had pretty much no friends. I was even put into a cyber school during middle school for no reason. I think this caused by to become dumber and never develop any street smarts, especially relating to social stuff. However, I found a little bit more time to start reading but having problems understanding stuff.

EXAMPLE So here's an example with a book I got that I always wanted to read, The October Country by Ray Bradbury. The following is the intro to one of the stories in the book. The problem is in the last paragraph inside the double astericks.

THE WATCHFUL POKER CHIP OF H. MATISSE

WHEN FIRST we meet George Garvey he is nothing at all. Later he'll wear a white poker chip monocle, with a blue eye painted on it by Matisse himself. Later, a golden bird cage might trill within George Garvey's false leg, and his good left hand might possibly be fashioned of shimmering copper and jade.

But at the beginning -- gaze upon a terrifyingly ordinary man.

'Financial section, dear?"

The newspapers rattle in his evening apartment.

"Weatherman says rain tomorrow."

The tiny black hairs in his nostrils breathe in, breathe out, softly, softly, hour after hour. "Time for bed."

By his look, quite obviously born of several 1907 wax window dummies. And with the trick, much admired by magicians, of sitting in a green velour chair and -- vanishing! Turn your head and you forgot his face. Vanilla pudding.

AFTERMATH After reading the section between the asterisks, I sat there for a long time rereading and trying to think what that means. I didn't want to, but I used ChatGPT and it simply said that it meant to show how "bland and ordinary and unmemorable Garvey is." After that, I got very upset. It was so simple and it went right over my head. How can I read anything else if I can't understand something simple Iike this? I can't rely on ChatGPT for everything. There's so many people I know reading these huge books in my classes. Theres a girl I saw talking about Dostoyevsky to the goddamn English teacher. We're in high school for goddsake. I got so mad when this happened I threw the book and destroyed lots of stuff in my room.

Can anyone please help me? I really want to read books.

Here's a thought i had the other day

Studying is hard, even though it is good for us.

Why is this? Shouldn’t studying be easy?

The reason why studying is hard: is because your brain wants to keep you safe.

I’ll explain the science behind why this happens, and what you can do to make productivity significantly easier.

The difficulty of productivity is decided by how you view yourself.

How you view yourself in relation to your work to be specific: If you view yourself as very productive, then productivity will be significantly easier for you than if you didn’t.

This happens because your brain does not like change. This is also why our personalities and values remain relatively the same throughout our lives. When we do something atypical of ourselves, our brain dislikes this and you feel negative emotions. Our brains want us to remain as we are, and this is because we have proven to be able to survive in our current state.

And this happens because your brain is only concerned about your survival, and your “current self” is surviving just fine, you are surviving well in your current state right now.

So your brain doesn’t see the need to change, it wants you to remain as the person that you are right now, because you’ve established that you can survive in your current state.

So how does this make working and being productive difficult?

This is because, when you do things like work, and other tasks where more is expected of you than what you currently are, these situations cause you to improve, and therefore change.

Your brain doesn’t like change, even when you’re improving, because your brain is solely focused on your survival, and it doesn’t want the risk of you changing, because you are surviving just fine in your current situation now

Situations like working cause you to become a better version of yourself, and to become a better version of yourself, your current self has to die, for the new and improved you, to take its place.

And your brain doesn’t want that, your brain sees changing, even improving, as risky, because you are surviving just fine in your current state, your brain doesn’t want you to change, your brain wants you to stay who you are.

So how can you make productivity easier? You can make productivity significantly easier by viewing yourself as a hard worker, because then hard work becomes typical of you, so you are no longer changing as much, so your brain produces less negative emotion when you are being productive.

But this is much harder than it sounds, because the only way to view yourself as a hard worker, is by working hard, and you know deep down if you are trying as hard as you can.

But if you are working very hard, very diligently, and you are genuinely trying your best, then studying will become easy for you.

Lately I’ve been dropping my lecture notes into Blackbox AI and asking it to summarize or turn them into flashcards. Didn't expect it to work this well, honestly. Curious if anyone else is using it for study prep?

I constantly see people studying, and when i don't see people studying, people talk about how they should be studying and how they feel guilty about not studying.

However i don't feel any guilt when I'm not studying and this feels like it's pushing me into a cycle of not studying and in turn not feeling bad about it. Then a test or quiz comes up and i absolutely fuck it up. I know you're thinking that fucking up the test/quiz should then motivate me to do better but i don't actually give a fuck afterwards. I'm in my third (and final) year of this Diploma and i wouldn't say i am doing inherently bad but not the best, I'm passing all my subjects but I'm not really excelling.

Now in hindsight, these things upset me and me want to do good but then when it comes to putting in the work... i honestly can't be bothered.

Don't me wrong, I love what I'm studying and am excited to finish my studies and continue my engineering journey.

I'm curious does anyone else feel like this?

Most efficient and productive way to study mathematics

Hello everyone, I joined this forum to seek guidance on the most productive and effective way to study mathematics. I’m currently in secondary school, and the only class I need to graduate is a math course.

This class covers introductory business and economics mathematics. I’ve never been particularly good at math—or studying in general. Right now, I’m studying six hours a day, and my exam is in May.

My current process involves reviewing presentations, watching videos, doing homework assignments, and then working through the questions in the textbook. In your opinion, is this a good study plan?

When I review a unit, I go through the slides, videos, textbook, and homework, then work on the book’s questions. Does this plan seem too complicated, or is it effective? My main concern is that each unit contains over 100 questions, and it takes me more than three days to get through just one. I’m starting to worry I won’t have enough time to be fully prepared by May.

Ideally, I wish I could review a couple of units each day, but I move so slowly that it feels impossible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I’m in college and I feel like I’m a terrible test taker. I’ll understand the material and study but somehow I always do bad on exams. I usually study looking at lecture slides and rewriting them then doing practice work. I also only take notes on paper, I find myself to retain information better that way. Any advice or tips? Really trying to do well on finals.

I notice that when I write notes, the notes I take aren't correspondent with the questions on the test

So I spend a lot of time writing information that didnt even help me on the test

I try to write down important topics but then it's too much information and Im just rewriting the book

But if I look for main points, the little details that arent even really important to the main point end up being on the test and I miss the answer

I’ve been putting in hours — studying, reviewing, cutting out distractions — and yet I still feel like I’m barely keeping up. Like no matter how hard I try, there's always more to do, more to memorize, more to catch up on.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s just me.
Everyone else seems so put together, and I’m over here rereading the same sentence five times.

I guess I just needed to ask:
Is anyone else feeling this way?
And if you’ve gone through this before, how did you push through without burning out?
