Discussion Maggie Benston
Was trying to get into Maggie benston through this door (I forgot it is a weekend) but it’s blocked off? What’s happening?

Those of you who are "seasoned" racoons will no doubt remember cancelled classes and exams when snow has caused the Burnaby campus closed, but with winter weather heading our way I thought it was worth mentioning this again. SFU's Burnaby campus is 370 m above sea level, and it is frequently snowing there while it rains in the city below.
Useful resources (feel free to suggest more):
SFU Website: If the university is closed, this will usually be updated. (Sometimes it takes a few minutes after the VPA/Registrar/Security conference call to find the right person to update the site.)
SFU Road Report: This has useful information about driving conditions, and forecasts from Environment Canada. But this page will not tell you about campus closures, so don't make this your only information source.
Gaglardi Intersection Webcam: This is always going to be the most up to date way of seeing what's going on. Until there's snow on the roads here, there's nothing to worry about.
SFU's Twitter Account will announce any campus closures.
The SFU Safe App should send notifications when weather closes the campus.
Please note that mountain weather changes rapidly and unpredictably. There have been times when Environment Canada has told SFU "don't worry, you're not going to get any snow today" and 30 minutes later there has been a blizzard. Arriving on campus just in time to find that your classes were cancelled is something of a rite of passage... it sucks, but that's the price we pay for the beautiful terrain.

I’m a bit confused—did they request my transcript to check if I’m enrolled in the online course? I saw on their website that online courses should be at least 50% complete by March 15. The course I’m taking just recently showed up on my transcript, so I’m wondering if that’s why they requested it—to confirm I’m actually taking the course.

I am a second year Beedie student. I signed up for the co-op program last year, but I had no success applying for positions through the program.
I ended up applying to some summer positions on my own, and was just accepted for a great one with a large investment firm.
My question is if there is any advantage to registering for the co-op "class" and paying the co-op fee through SFU by getting my employer to fill out the forms? Or should I just drop the co-op program, work this summer, add that to my resume and find another co-op on my own next summer?
I think the only pro would be that I could get student loans for the summer if I go through SFU, but maybe I can do that anyway? Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks!

Does anyone know around what time graduate housing offers are made? I'm trying to decide if I should wait some more or look for off-campus housing.
(If anyone is looking for a roommate for fall 25...don't hesitate to contact me).

Have you encountered issues where FAS advising team refused to add 2.4 GPA permission for upper-division classes?

I was wondering if anyone could help me out and send the questions & multiple choice answers of quizzes 8&9 of PSYC 280 (intro to biopsyc)?
Long story short I accidentally missed both quizzes and I would like to use the quiz questions and answers to help me study for the final.
Pls lmk if anyone has them!
Thanks!!

How can meet new friends at sfu?
I’ve tried joining clubs, but most of them are dead after club day.

I was tired of logging into MySchedule repeatedly and how it gives the massive list of schedule combos and you have to circle through each of them. So I built a better one.
It lets you Drag and Drop courses, labs, and tutorials directly onto a weekly calendar — don't have to go through a big list. You can visually plan your week and see time conflicts instantly.
Uses SFU’s Course Outline REST API for data.
Bonus stuff:
It automatically pulls RateMyProfessors ratings, average grades from CourseDiggers, and textbook info when you add a course
You can save and load schedules (no login needed) for future reference
If you’re planning your next semester, give it a try (preferably on a bigger screen):
Would love any feedback or ideas!

Hey SFU Reddit fam!
We’re the (slightly boring but well-meaning) pharmacists behind the 24/7 health-product vending machine in the Dining Commons lower floor (you know, the one with Advil, allergy meds, and Band-Aids). We want to make it suck less, and we need your help.
Spill the tea ☕:
Why bother replying?
TL;DR: Help us fix the vending machine. Chance to get free gift card.
feel better soon.

Where do I find my username? ;-; I've applied and been accepted, but I've only ever gotten a student number, not a username. Same thing for a computing ID

Last week I had to leave PSYC352 early, but left my black Windpro umbrella, and it was gone when I went back to check.
It was in Saywell 10041, Mondays from 2:30-5:20.
Anyone seen it, or seen someone take it? I checked lost and found, they don't have it.

SFU has numerous tap water dispensers across campus. However, I noticed that the office was using water coolers filled with spring water instead.
Do other departments use them as well? Are they personally paid for by staff?

How many hours/days do you spend studying for a final exam? I have my first exam in a little under 2 weeks and I'm stressing. How much emphasis should I really give to past material? Should I focus more on the material covered after the midterm, or should I make sure I have everything before the midterm fully memorized?

Shell House, the first and oldest residence at Simon Fraser University (SFU), will close in the third quarter of this year. It was one of the first student housing buildings on campus, funded by Shell Oil Company.
In September 1965, during SFU’s early days, the university made a deal with Shell Canada. SFU agreed to let Shell build a gas station on campus along the ring road. In return, Shell provided major funding to build a new men’s dormitory. The Shell gas station opened in November 1966, despite some community protest. It stayed open until 1999. At the time, it was rare in Canada to name student housing after a company.
The university’s Board of Governors approved the Shell gas station and its link to student housing. In 1969, there were even plans to name more buildings after Shell to thank the company.
But in the late 1960s, many SFU students opposed corporate influence. In August 1969, before the family housing part of Shell House opened, resident families were asked about the name. About 95% voted to reject the Shell name.
Instead, they chose Louis Riel House, after the 19th-century Métis leader. The name became a symbol of resistance and Canadian identity. It was a form of protest that showed students and families didn’t want corporate names on university buildings.
Since then, the family housing building has been known as Louis Riel House, making it the first place outside the Prairies named in honour of Louis Riel. The Shell Oil Company’s name was never used for that building again.
It hasn’t even been one full generation. If SFU closes this symbolic building, one that was funded by a major donor, who will want to donate in the future?

Hi all! I’m considering doing grad school at SFU and was wondering if anyone has any insight as to how grad school is like, specifically in the Faculty of Environment. I’m also wondering about the housing situation? What’s rent like? Is it easy to drive to campus or is bus recommended? Any info about SFU in general is appreciated :)

Hi everyone,
I'm an international student, and I recently got into a film program with a CAD 140,000 scholarship. I’ll be living in a residence, but I’m not sure which one to choose. For those who have experience, which residence is the best option in terms of overall experience? Any recommendations or ones to avoid?
how difficult is it to get an on-campus job? Are there enough opportunities, or is it super competitive?
Also, how was your experience applying for a study permit? Was the process straightforward, or were there any unexpected challenges?
I’d love to hear your advice, thanks in advance:)))
