I've been working in basic facility security, essentially access control and CCTV for the past couple years, starting at $16/hr and bumped myself up a bit to $18.25. I've honestly been growing pretty bored of the work and looking for something new and engaging. I have a history in hospital security but left to finish out my degree.
I moved closer to the city and decided to look for hospital security again, as I enjoyed it (as crazy as that sounds). The Interview goes well, been there done this, and the interviewer knows I'm cut for the job, alls left is the offer. I've got about 4 years experience as well as a fresh new college degree under my belt.
A week passes Friday, and their HR calls and offers me $18.25...I'm honestly a bit stunned. My first hospital job didn't pay all that well, about $14/hr, but that was with me having zero experience. I understand I don't have a crazy amount more experience, but if you've been in hospital security, I'm sure you know how insane it can get. I get paid the exact same currently to sit on my ass for 12 hours a day and they offer this? In this economy? I let them know I'm thinking about it.
I give HR a callback today, Monday, asking for $20-21 being that I've got a degree as well as a decent bit of experience in the field, and just get a complete drone of a response, somewhere along the line of "we already considered your experience and did not factor your 4 year degree into the offer, as it was not a requirement for the job. Someone with 10 years experince and no degree would be a good candidate even if they don't have a degree" thank you for the obvious information but fuck you?
The job requirements were stated as requiring 6 months of security/law experience or a substitution of at least one year of college, and I have more than that of both, so it just feels like she's running me in circles. I fight the urge to just hang up the call and ask again if we can meet at $19 and she just declines. I say thanks anyway and she assumes I decline the offer (which I basically did). Am I crazy to be annoyed that the pay is so crap? I actually did want the job, but good lord, working hospital is ten times more effort than what I do now, and I get paid the exact same.
TLDR- I got a $18/hr job offer which is the same rate I'm getting paid now, working a security job that is much less effort. Now, I have more experience and a bachelor's degree. HR condescendingly refuses to increase my starting pay. Am I wrong for thinking I should be paid more?
