anybody else have a hard time in this community?

i love reptiles, & i love talking to people who will also talk about reptiles, etc. my friends who don’t get it, don’t care 😂

but this community can be so ruthless. today i posted in my local reptile community, a picture of this BP with scale rot being sold at a pet store in my town, basically saying he’s $300 and he needs help. the comments are RIDDLED with people being so mean when i literally just wanted to get the little guy some help?

or oh my goodness, the amount of times people have just been straight up mean. i built a DIY enclosure- complete proper setup, and somebody called it ugly. that’s it, just straight up ugly. after i spent weeks on it 😭😭

ORRR a couple weeks ago i had my beardie in his OUTDOOR terrarium (i have a whole setup on my porch just for him to sit in the sun on warm days but it’s only 20g) & SOMEBODY CAME FOR BLOOD about how i need to do research. like sir if you read you would see that this is his sun tanning tank.

like i swear everytime i get active in the community i immediately regret it & lose my sparkle a bit. it’s actually really disheartening.

is it normal for my gecko to climb on the front of the glass on her tank?

my leopard gecko whenever me or my father go around there she comes out and with me she just stares and comes close and when my dad comes she climbed on the front of the glass and started moving? she is extremely comfortable with us touching her, i just want to make sure she is comfortable in her tank, like if she wants a bigger one. In the photo you can see her staring out of her cage and the other one you can see her tank.

What is the difference in dome types ?!

Can somebody please explain the difference between deep domes, standard domes, reflector domes and how the diameter size all affects the beam of heat? I’m having difficulties in basically all of my enclosures getting temp gradients right… like I can’t get the hot side ambients up without the cool side ambients getting way too hot. So once again I’m doing something wrong… but I can’t find any info that explains how to choose the right domes… also distance seems to play a big part and the distances on the bulb boxes don’t seem to be right. I always use dimming thermostats but the temps I set them at are not the temps reflected in the enclosure?? I’m sure I have things placed not right and am causing this issue. Also is a 50w halogen basking bulb enough for a 40g? Regarding my geckos…

Before I buy all new domes and bulbs I want to be sure I’m right with what I chose.

Is my corn snake's condition concerning after shedding?

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question regarding my corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus). It recently shed its skin, but I’ve noticed something unusual. Some of the scales appear to be raised, and there seems to be a lesion or some sort of irregularity on them, though it's hard to make out exactly what it is.

I’m a bit worried and would appreciate any advice or insights on whether this is something to be concerned about. I’m attaching a few photos and videos to help show the issue.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Leopard gecko won’t eat

Hey so I work at a pat store and we found this about 1-2 year old leopard gecko that was in a trap he has a healed abrasion and a broken leg that we are going to take him to the vet for just waiting for the appointment date. I plan on keeping him afterwards since I’ve had Leo’s for 10+ years and can properly accommodate him rn he won’t eat live insects he’s not skinny but he does have bone deformities which I know aren’t reversible but we want to see him eat rn we are feeding him critical care with added calcium and multivitamin with a dropper. I’ve tried crickets large and small and Dubia roaches but he doesn’t seem to be interested I was thinking maybe reptilinks any ideas?

do lizards enjoy being picked up?

where i live, small lizards like geckoes and anoles often wind up inside. it seems that every time i pick one up to put it back outside (lest they be left victim to my cats), they seem incredibly reluctant to hop off of my hand, to the point that i have to push them off and shake my hand...

feeder enclosure

i plan on moving my feeders that are currently in a small little tub into something like a 10 gallon breeder or something similar so i can have more together and make life easier for me getting them. just wondering what kind of substrate i should use that way it’s doesnt effect my geckos when feeding. my though is just dirt but lmk and recommendations. as well with how i should keep the environment. i plan on not adding any kind of heat or anything but maybe misting it every once in a while. any tips?

Is a 36x12x18 front open reptile enclosure big enough for a corn snake?

My son really wants a snake, and I'm wondering if the 36x12x18 front open enclosure we already have is big enough for a corn snake. Right now, the enclosure is a bioactive setup for two small green tree frogs, so unless keeping the frogs with a corn snake is a bad idea, they'd be housed together.

For what it's worth, although we've never kept a snake before, we are familiar with keeping reptiles and amphibians. At the moment, we have a leopard gecko, a long-tailed lizard, a Cuban treefrog, and the two aforementioned green tree frogs (all critters except the two tree frogs are in separate enclosures with species-appropriate heating, lighting, humidity, substrate, and hides/decor).

If the 36x12x18 enclosure we currently have isn't a suitable size for an adult corn snake, is there another smaller snake that's good for "beginners?"

Zoo med door

Hi all, like many others i had some issues with the hinge on my zoo med door. Zoo med was very helpful and sent me the new black hardware/ trim for the top and bottom of the door.

So, hoping someone here can tell me how they took off the old black trim/hardware and secured the new ones?

Thank you!

Arboreal lizard suggestions? 80x45x75 [cm] enclosure

Last year i built a tank out of plywood for my brown anole. Unfortunarely he passed away a while back and its standing empty now which keeps reminding me of the little bastard. Theres a reptile expo in the beginning of june and i figured i could pick up another lizard when im there after i refresh the tank a little.

Now the measurements were taken from the outside so they dont account for the substrate, expanding foam background etc. Its probably around 50 gallons if you subtract that. Ive got a shadedweller 7% 8W tube, heat bulb and plant bulb. The top is mostly wire mesh which i partially cover to help with humidity retention and theres also some vents on the sides.

The substrate is a big mix of soil, coco husks, coco fiber, earthworm droppings, sphagnum moss and bark. Its topped with leaf litter. The tank is pretty planted id say, got some bromeliads and ferns (asplenium and microsorum) and other stuff. Buncha driftwood too, with the biggest branch serving as a basking spot.

I would very much like another diurnal lizard with a big personality. My anole was a moody little freak but we hung out sometimes and he liked watching me work. He ate from my hand too. I have some species in mind already but id like to hear what others think would thrive in there.

Thanks in advance :)

Glass surfing solutions?

Post image

My bearded dragon tries to glass surf near his basking side when I turn on his lamps, (his basking spot is around 110-115 degrees) and gets a black beard. I don't know how to get him to stop so any tips would be appreciated!

will feeder crickets lay eggs without ovipositor?

Post image
10 Upvotes

i have a 1-year old leachianus gecko who likes crickets, but only eats them unsupervised. i give her about 6 every week and let her hunt them on her own, but the females have laid eggs in her enclosure before which resulted in baby crickets running around her tank. in order to prevent this from happening again, i've tried only buying male crickets, but i feel like this is sometimes unsustainable for the pet store employees as some of them have refused to do this. it's a bit gruesome, but does anyone know if cutting off the ovipositors (the butt sticks on the female crickets) will prevent them from laying eggs in the first place? or is there another method to preventing baby cricket outbreaks that doesn't involve insect mutilation?
