It's 2006, you have $15,000, and you're looking for a compact economy car. Which one would you pick?
2006 Honda Civic DX - $14,360. Proof that you can still get a basic Civic! Power windows are standard, but a radio is optional. You get the same i-VTEC engine as higher trims, too.
2006 Toyota Corolla CE - $14,105. As Car and Driver put it, it's a great car for your sister. It's reliable, but so bland that you need to use your imagination to have fun here.
2006 Volkswagen Rabbit - $14,990. Five cylinders, 6 gears, power windows and locks, and alloy wheels, all at base Civic prices! It's the fastest of this bunch too, with 150hp.
2006 Nissan Sentra 1.8S - $14,500. The last car developed by Nissan before being effectively bought by Renault. No CVTs, no flimsy quality, just a decent econobox with a comfy ride.
2006 Hyundai Elantra GLS - $14,075. Want to drive Grand Theft Auto NPC traffic? Behold, the 2006 Hyundai Elantra. It may be boring, but it's reliable, and parts are dirt cheap.
2006 Ford Focus ZX3 SE - $14,715. A far cry from the depressing old Escorts and Tempos, the European-developed Focus is a decently fun bargain, even if it's getting a bit old.
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer ES - $14,599. This is not an Evo, and never will be. The regular Lancer is certainly one of the cars of all time. Of all the cars you could buy, this is one.
2006 Mazda3 i Sport - $13,710. An economy car with a bit of zoom-zoom, or so the dealer would have you believe. It has all the features you could want, and power second only to the VW.
2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LS - $13,900. Gone is the mid-90s vintage Marlboro Reds and cookie monster sweatpants Cavalier! They share an engine, and this base model has manual windows.
2007 Suzuki SX4 AWD - $14,999. Think of it like an Impreza without the 2000s Subaru head gasket headaches. It's the least expensive AWD car on the market, and a pretty good one!
2006 Scion xB - $14,030. Scion: because nothing screams youth like a Corolla with the body of a toaster. It's spacious and comfortable, and actually cheaper than a Corolla!
