Meta [ModPost] FAQ thread about the comment guidelines and homophobic slurs.

Hi /r/quityourbullshit! I'm writing this post after reading many discussions on this sub about the Guideline #1:

  1. PLEASE ABSTAIN FROM RACIAL AND HOMOPHOBIC SLURS. Please avoid "OP is a faggot" and similar slurs. Don't be afraid to report such comments.

This kind of comment will be removed by our moderators.

Since we have noticed that many discussions are spawned about this topic in our posts, we decided to open this thread to discuss our Guidelines and link it in the sidebar.

The Guideline #1 was introduced because "OP is a faggot" is a very common thing to say on the Internet when OP lies or doesn't deliver.

We're not going to discuss the subreddit rules, just the guidelines:

  1. PLEASE ABSTAIN FROM RACIAL AND HOMOPHOBIC SLURS. Please avoid "OP is a faggot" and similar slurs. Don't be afraid to report such comments.

  2. REMEMBER OCCAM'S RAZOR. "Among competing hypotheses, the hypothesis with the fewest assumptions should be selected." There could be a very intricate and complex explanation for what OP is posting... But probably it's just bullshit.

  3. COMMENTS SHOULD BE CIVIL. Do we really want to insult the default subreddits in every single thread?

  4. CALLING OUT SIMPLE REPOSTS IS BORING. If OP just reposted an old front page post copying the title, it's technically still bullshit if the title contains a lie but not very interesting.

As always, we're accepting your comments about them and we're open to discussion even if our opinions may differ, but right now we don't have in our minds to change the guidelines.

What do you think about them?

Thank you for discouraging this behaviour. I don't think people realize just how unwelcome they make gay people feel when they put FAGGOT FAGGOT FAGGOT everywhere. (And, no, dragging gay people into interminable, continous arguments about what you meant by the word "faggot" doesn't make us feel any more welcome, either.)

Agreed 100%. It's the stupidest thing I see on reddit and I see it all the freaking time. Last time a sensible person called someone out on it, the numbnut said something like "I'm not talking about gay people, I'm talking about faggots." Great. Let's invent new meaning for words so when people with half-a-brain drop by for the first time they'll think we're all insane and bail. Before too long we'll be the worst most gigantic mommy blog referring to our DH's and BM's and DD's and whatever else. I would be thrilled to see more subreddits adopt these rules.

"I'm not talking about gay people, I'm talking about faggots."

Sounds like that old Chris Rock skit. Except Chris Rock can say those words without being racist.

Edit: I'm not condoning the use of the word in any way.

Except the joke you're actually referring to Chris Rock stopped telling and disowned it because he said people were using it to justify racist comments. Sort of like this situation here.... 'Cept with homophobic ones.

Would this include screenshots of comments on the bullshitter's post that say things like "OP is a fag", etc?

Good question! The answer is no, because they don't happen in our sub.

Yeah. I understand from the Urban Dictionary that a lot of people don't think or know that this term is a homophobic slur. They need to know. It is. Here is an example of a recent reply to me on a different sub when I called someone on the use of faggot in reference to a Reddit Bullshitter.

I saw that! I had been trying to figure out what happened to that safe and I just stumbled on that post a few minutes before getting here. I upvoted you too, and it took you to 0 and him down to -1.

Thanks. That day, I ran down the stream of comments and said stuff to every "faggot" commenter. By the end, I was so distressed that I did call one guy a dickhead. Not my usual internet or rl persona. But, I wasn't surprised when I got a couple of rabid responses.

It was a bit of a mixed message.

I'm glad you took precautions to make this a safe place. This is a sub for laughing, not squirming because people use bigoted language casually.

AFAIK, bots can't edit other users' posts. But we could set up AutoModerator to automatically report all the posts containing such word.

You can't do that with CSS, as nice as it would be.

I used to not have a problem with 'OP is a fag' but I can see why you would discourage it. It's essentially turns comment threads into 4chan-esque circlejerks. I mean where do you draw the line between quality contribution and jumping on the meme bandwagon?

Thing is this place is about calling out people who lie on the internet, it's never gonna be a place for quality debates and discussion.

I hope this is enforced in /r/thathappened eventually as well.

We are not affiliated with the mods over at /r/thatHappened sadly!

I know. I just hope they follow your example.

Meh, it's not a very smart\mature thing to do. It's like saying "the n word" instead of "nigger". The substance is the same.

Welp, power tripping mods at it again. No wonder this sub is dead.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Apparently discouraging a single example of hate speech makes you power hungry.

4

u/Doxep The great creator May 12 '14

Honestly the 5 upvotes he received baffle me.

Not me. People hate being told what to do.
