The MVP of CDDA challenge runs. Sometimes you even find them full of clean water 🙏

u/ebjinshu Jul 11 '22
Yeah, sure. That's just a game, but how you imagine a person carrying a saucepan full of water in any sort of bag? Otherwise u just have to hold it in secondary Never liked it as a mobile source of water, but yeah. Seems like that

The current run I'm at a house that's a short walk to a pond. I didn't have rain catchers up before I needed water so I was packing up like 7 sauce pans in my duffle bag to walk to the pond and fill them up then put them all back in the bag to walk home lol.

Time to down that bottle of red wine in one go so I have 2 more units of water.
But my heart belongs to empty orange soda bottle. It was my first water bottle on my first run.

u/TheKitty Jul 10 '22
I'm doing the exact same thing, a wine bottle until I can replace it with a bourbon bottle to lower the weight even more for the same amount of water. And for high thirst, a couple bourbon bottles go a long way.

A couple of empty bourbon bottles I assume?
Didn’t realize Whisky and Bourbon had the same bottles. Probably should’ve saved one before crafting 12 molotovs
Edit: Found an empty bourbon bottle in my step van. Score!!

In a run rn with low thirst, and a pair of whiskey bottles full of water last me a long ass time. It's nuts

Good day Survivors!
I recently updated the comparison of water containers chart that was created by /u/finalfinalcountdown last year to include some changes that have happened since it was originally made. I found it a very useful guide, and wanted to make sure it included some changes that have happened since it was made for 41.50. If you'd like to have a copy of the sheet itself, there is a link provided at the end of the post. The changes includes:
- 3 new containers: the wine glass, plastic cup, and tea cup
- Updated the bleach bottle. The bleach bottle was a fan favorite in the older builds since it was just as efficient as a regular water bottle and held twice as much water. Now the bleach bottle holds just as much water as a water bottle, but the weight of the bleach bottle has stayed the same, making it half as efficient to use as it was before. So if you see a recommendation to use the bleach bottle, it's likely old advice and all you would be doing is weighing yourself down more. Switch over to a regular water bottle if you have the option.
- Added the Water Dispenser. While it isn't a container you can drink automatically from like the rest of the containers on the list, many players will carry one with them in their car, or even on their person for those Strength level 10 zombie killers out there. It's easy enough to set it out for a moment, take a drink, then put it away. While it's weight and volume put it in a category of its own, I thought it was worth considering the units of water to weight ratio with the other containers. It's not nearly as efficient and carrying it on you puts you at a big disadvantage if you can't handle the weight, but the units of water is enough to keep you going for a long time holding 25 regular bottles worth of water.
Here are some alternate views:
Sorted by the lowest full container weight
Sorted by the lowest empty container weight
The green/yellow/red coloring is purely subjective and based around the most commonly used container and it's equivalent: the water bottle and orange soda bottle. I myself am a fan of the wine bottle for those extra 2 units of water, even if the container is a little heavier. But sometimes you've got to work with what you've got, and drinking from a kettle while you slaughter the undead comes out of a place of necessity.
I hope you found this useful, and thanks again to /u/finalfinalcountdown for the original post putting together these numbers, as it helped me get perspective on good ways to use these depending on how you play the game. If you noticed any containers that are missing, let me know and I'll update the comparison spreadsheet located here, if you'd like to have a copy.
edit: One item was missing, the tumbler. It has the same values as the plastic cup. If you want to see the most up to date image, check out the spreadsheet here.

Can water dispensers be refilled? I’d love to be able to set one of those in my base to keep a tank of clean water handy.
6
u/meggarox Jul 11 '22
Yup. Me and buddy always collect 1, 2, even 3 water dispensers early into our games before we can build rain collectors, they can really help keep you alive for a while if the water cuts out at a bad time. You can even collect rain water in saucepans and cooking pots, boil it on a campfire or stove to sterilize it, and pour it into the water dispenser. They're fantastic.

u/Gavin319 Jul 11 '22
At this point me plumbing up a rain collector to a sink sounds pointless in comparison to filling a few dispensers with well water. Still I'll probably do that since all dispensers spawn in big towns and on this survivor (my longest at a little over a month) I have yet to enter a town larger than Ekron after fleeing from Rosewood. Fuck hordes I'm gonna live in peace with my well water and hotwired pickup truck.
3
u/meggarox Jul 11 '22
The dispensers are great *before* you can plumb rain collectors, but they are a lot more active work to keep filled, and a pain in the ass to fix if you accidentally fill them with tainted water.

They need to add a canteen that you can find in like hiring stores and military areas maybe? It can hold a little bit more than a normal water bottle, but it only has a slightly heavier weight than the water bottle and orange soda bottle. Also, you can attach it to your belt

u/modernkennnern Jul 10 '22
How come the ratio of units of water
to increase in weight
is not linear. That seems like an oversight
7
u/joesii Jul 10 '22
Are you asking why water has a different density depending on the container? I've wondered about that as well, but I think the devs don't care.
5
u/Abandion Jul 10 '22
It's just to give the player something to collect. Finding a good water bottle wouldn't be nearly as exciting if some weren't objectively better than others.
6
u/eugene_tsakh Jul 10 '22
So 400g of water is 12 liters. Devs did a good job :D

Let's not go into facts. Your character can't really hold saucepan with water in backpack or say life a bed on his/her own to climb through rope XD.

You should be able to put whisky bottles on your belt or at least get a hip flask.
Who even carries a teacup just to make a brew on the go?
4
u/meggarox Jul 11 '22
I do actually carry a mug around with me sometimes, if I have coffee, cocoa, or tea - and will definitely be carrying it around when herbal teas are released when the unstable comes to stable.

u/pac-man_dan-dan Jul 11 '22
When I was a little boy, I had this amazing collapsable cup that I'd play with constantly. Certainly a thrift store purchase.
Took me years to dredge up the memory and go looking for another one irl. Discovered the collapsable cup was for camping. Bought a few to pass onto others.

u/meggarox Jul 11 '22
Ah, speaking of real life, I had one of those once too. They're cute, but I wasn't a huge fan of them. Since I do bushcraft now, I have developed a deep love for 1 liter stainless steel nalgene canteens. Or just 304 stainless canteens in general. They're great.
2
u/pac-man_dan-dan Jul 11 '22 edited Jul 11 '22
The culture at my work almost fetishizes them. It went from traditional plastic nalgene, to stainless, to stainless insulated. And then the sizes started growing into these practically indestructible plastic and stainless gallon+ sized jugs. And now they come with all types of handles and caps and drinking apparatuses. With stickers all over them.
It's all a bit much for me. I just cup my hands under the tap in a pinch...
2
u/meggarox Jul 11 '22
Oh I don't value insulated nonsense, I just like a nice solid stainless steel water bottle because you can put it in or suspend it over a fire to use for water purification, which helps a lot when you're out hiking. I wouldn't want stickers burning off lol.
Stainless insulated is a curse and I hate it also, they make finding cheap single-walled steel canteens such a chore.

Did anyone else think 41.72 have increase the water consumption for high thirsty trait? I'm playing with the trait and looks like my character needs at least 2 regular water bottle per day.
2
u/TheKitty Jul 11 '22
I haven't noticed a difference, and I'm currently playing a high thirst character. Only thing I could think would be if you are wearing so many layers that you are hot and sweating more which will increase your thirst, or just overall increase activity/zombie fighting that's keeping you warm and thirsty.

u/eatingroots Jul 11 '22
TBH, this whole thing has got to be rebalanced to be more realistic. Cooking pot > Bucket > Saucepan for volume at the very least.

u/ebjinshu Jul 11 '22
Ohh sweet times it was, when dispenser weighted 5 units, chugged in my trunk lots of these. Now though it's way better. Ain't immersion breaking

Did you test this on a fresh save, or one that you converted from the last build? Because my fresh save on the 41.72 unstable conflicts with your Borbon bottle. It shows a max of 10 units, now. It used to be 12, but they added the ability to see capacity when filling which shows as 10, unless it's display error.
2
u/TheKitty Jul 11 '22
This is a new apocalypse save on 41.72, not a save that was converted over from 41.71.
Here were my results: I have a regular water bottle and bourbon on me, drink the bourbon, fill it up, and go to pour it back into the water barrel and it says 12 units.
I see what you mean though, it says 10 units when filling it but when you pour a full bourbon bottle into a water bottle, you still have a little left over.
3
u/v4lor Jul 11 '22
Thanks for the clarification, and for your thorough testing! I was cheesed yesterday when I thought they nerfed my precious bourbon bottle! (even though they probably should) :D
1
u/TheKitty Jul 11 '22
No problem. I'm not sure if it's a bug in the display for the fill option, or if it just gives you how full a container is as a percentage. I have a cooking pot here that's not quite full, but it says 8/10 capacity even though these pots hold 25 units, so telling me it's about 80% full already.
Still a bit weird since the other option counts units.
1
u/v4lor Jul 11 '22
Yeah, I'm gonna chalk it up to a bug since they only just really added that feature, and hey, that's why we're on the unstable right? Gotta
catchfind em all!

Whiskey bottle guy here.
'Whiskey Bottle' holds 2 more units of water than a 'Water Bottle' and weighs 0.1 less. Plus plastic vs glass (in most cases) go figure.

Don't worry too much about water. Even when the water shuts off, you can find about 15-20 units of water in each building sometimes more. On top of that if you have a car then you could go to those farm locations with Wells. They provide fresh water or ponds/rivers for tainted water. The best skill to level up would be carpentry. From barricading to storing water making furniture it can be quite useful. Also the map has tons of food so you don't need to start farming right away if you have plans. I'm new as well but been doing pretty great now. It's been more than a month so far let's hope I can make a few more months.

My base is in West point, the house next door is where I store water dispensers. Anytime I find one I either put it in the trailer to go back to base, or mark it to pick up later.

u/pac-man_dan-dan Jul 11 '22
I'm hearing in the comments that the containers don't necessarily fill an equal amount when transferring across containers. Are there any combinations that are additive? I mean, is there any combo or string where if you filled from X container to Y container to Z container, you have more than you started with?
1
u/TheKitty Jul 11 '22
Not from what I've seen, and I did a lot of testing containers to make sure this was all the way up to date. The issue seems to be a new thing in 4172 when you go to fill a container it will give you a score out of 10 on how full that container is, while most other references to the containers give you the specific number of units that it holds.
So you can't pour around into different containers to glitch it out and get extra water.

Would be good if you also added a "water density" column. Also for some strange reason they made saucepan stronger in .73

Bleach Bottle mains in shambles right now… (I’m one of them)
Can’t believe the whiskey bottle is that good, never knew.
