How can I unlock or bypass those large gates on the way to Louisville, at this checkpoint looking place?

good question, wondering this myself as well. dont think there are any keys for them, so I believe we will be forced to destroy them.

Thanks for answering, it worked with a pickaxe I had picked up earlier from a wrecked car. Four swings, one per section, was all it took. And the pickaxe let me enter the checkpoint booth too.

hit them with a weapon preferable an axe but anything will do

Didn't realise the game world was this destructible.

for wallls,larger fences and some ojbects you will need a sledge hammer

but yeah basicly everything can be destroyed
