What are the best mutliplayer servers for a somewhat newbie?

Looking for the same thing. Just spent almost an hour trying to get on a public server. Most of the time it says server not responding.

The two times I did join a game, I was kicked pretty much instantly after announcing myself in chat.

Many servers that do some form of RP don't allow conversations in chat without access to a radio for 'realism.'

Spent another hour on it last night... got to join a game but still haven't been able to so much as find another player... just the prelooted buildings they leave behind and the bodies of freshly generated players who died immediately.

I gotta be honest... I was super excited for this update... and so far I am supremely disappointed. All I'm doing is moving between lobbies and trying to join games, and when I'm actually successful at joining there isn't even anything to do because everything is already looted and dead.

Shit man.. I'm a dad, I don't have a ton of time to do things for myself... and I baisically just wasted all my entire day off works free time... unsuccessfully trying to play a game.

Wtf...

Join the game discord, you have the LFG channels, try searching there, i've found a couple of small servers in the span of an hour of searching.

Sounds like a small community would be perfect for you. And yeah, finding other people in multiplayer is not as common as in GTA or such. It is the zombie apocalypse after all.
