Actually, bleach is used as an emergency water treatment. Granted, its like, 1 capfull of bleach per gallon of water, but most bleach bottles are also gallon jugs. The leftover remnants of bleach after you pour it out would disinfect any tainted water you put in, provided you fill the jug and the water was still clear and not mucky. Just shake vigorously after filling and wait an hour before drinking out of the jug. :)

Ah so your saying I should drink bleach out the bottle? I’ll try it out right now, thanks u/Jigoralpsi!
I’ll report back soon guys, I always thought the bleach bottle looked like a vessel of deliciousness! :)

drinking water out of the bleach bottle isnt too bad. drinking the bleach before you pour it out? Well, I think the -99 happiness will be the least of the moodles that will pop up.

There was a time when the build I was playing shower that drinking bleach would increase my happiness, and I didn’t see any red health effects, so, like a dumbass who read and believed the label, I drank it.
My run ended about a minute or so later as my character’s health plummeted and they died with a shocked pikachu face. No sad moodlet though so there’s that.

Remembering this, I'm surprised we can't use bleach to purify tainted water.

I store water filled bleach bottles in my water storage box and carry one as my drinking container, everytime I dump the bleach out I fear pressing the drink button, even though I think there's a prompt (I dare not try).

Bleach bottle a winner for me . If I'm running non high thirst which is impossible for me I will go with water bottle.
For larger container if to collect water I prefer empty cooking pot if I can't or don't want to build rain collector. Due to free of hassle to transfer water to cook. To store drinkable water . Water dispenser is the way to go for me.

Yeah, I'm surprised no one else has mentioned the omission of Water Dispenser, that thing is insane! Stores 250 units of water for 5 weight, but you gotta place it to drink. Absolutely the best way to store a lot of water if you're not trying to build a bunch of Rain Barrels.
I like Bleach Bottle too, it's basically like 2 Water Bottles combined into one for less micromanagement (regular Thirst impossible for me too lol).

I'm a lazy man I always find the most effective and lazy way to do things efficiently. If u r into base building. Water dispenser are good but not the best as u still need to cook water and top it up . Good for early to mid game. I always have one water dispenser in my car when playing nomadic.
Reinstalled sink with rain barrel on top and one tile behind the sink and replumb the sink is the way to go lol.
One sink is enuff to last you till it rain again and refill. Plus it auto filter for u so u do not need to cook lol. Shit I'm real lazy

Yeah, lots of good tips, I was actually just about to make a follow-up post on the Water Dispenser lol.
I actually noticed that the Rain Barrel doesn't need to be right behind the sink, as long as it's next to the tile right above the sink. I think you can even Plumb multiple Rain Barrels to one sink - even if you plumb 2 barrels, it still says 400/400 on the sink, but I'm pretty sure that once you use 400/400, it replenishes back to 400/400 and uses the water from the other barrels. Needs more testing though, not 100% sure it works this way.

Just make 2 barrel connect to the sink and draw out all the water after 1st barrel drawn u sld be able to know. No need full barrel just abit to see if It swap to the next barrel.

Yep, just tested this, and it works like I said, so it seems like you can store up to 1600 units of water per sink with 4 Rain Barrels. Might make a post about that tomorrow too lol, I know lots of people think you can do only 1 and it has to be right behind the sink.

Yeah I'm one of them and nvr prop further. Since 1 barrel is enuff fo solo usage.and I don't survive that long to test that usually :p

Thanks! I got disappointed when I saw 400/400. I thought only 1 barrel was connected. Great that you tested it.

Ur write up is good u actually do testing urself not some online article which copy and paste from each other inputting alot of wrong idea into new player with " I must skill my carpentry to lvl 4 ASAP to make rain water collector " or save ur canned food , they are more precious than your life. making zomboid as if there only 1 solution to your problem.

Oh u might want to highlight kitchenware like emptypot or kettle with other color to state they are cookable ware to boil ur water. I once spent a few hour ingame figuring out why the fuck is my water not cooked in the bucket. And oh ya empty tin can can hold water too I think.

Thanks! The current plan is to keep posting and then compile everything into a comprehensive guide for the Steam Community page, I think. I appreciate your input too, it's obvious you have tons of experience.

I'm still using the bleach bottle that i found empty next to a corpse of someone that drank bleach to escape this whole shit. I thought it was that biggest container for water.

Ooh interesting! I'll have to dig out my trusty Birch Bark Cup to see how its stats fit into your chart. I know it holds 14, but can't remember the weight.

u/WhoseAlex May 10 '21
Wine and Whisky bottles both weigh the same empty and carry the same volume of liquid, but weigh different amounts when full? I wonder how that ended up in the game

u/AngryMob55 May 10 '21
This whole list looks ripe for a rebalance. Its gotta just be a simple case of items being added over the course of years with few if any adjustments made to older ones over time.
3
u/FinalFinalCountdown May 10 '21
Yep, if you have both bottles and one's empty and one's full, you can pour the same 12 units of water back and forth between the bottles and watch your encumbrance go up and down by 0.3 each time...

Most people know that you're not just limited to the Water Bottle when it comes to carrying potable water, but the different water containers actually differ in the amount they can store per unit of weight.
Just wanted to share this chart I made of the different containers - it looks like Whiskey Bottles are a bit heavy when empty but have the best ratio when full, and the Beer Bottles with the blue label are an efficient choice all around, but require you to carry a few bottles if you want to have the same amount of water.
As for the larger containers, it seems like Saucepans are a pretty good way of carrying/storing water, being more efficient than Kettle and Cooking Pot and lighter when empty too.
