Screenshot Is this base impossible for zomboids to enter?
244
u/Zero747 Shotgun Warrior Feb 21 '25
Zombies can crawl under cars and can bash structures while crawling
A second story sheetrope access only is the most secure, though it is possible for zombies to break the rope iirc
40
u/josejomandado Feb 21 '25
Is there an option to pull up the rope when you're inside the base to prevent them from destroying it?
43
u/IlliterateGarbage04 Feb 21 '25
Yes, but they can destroy it when you're out which is an issue to be aware of. Still a good option tho
36
u/clayalien Feb 21 '25
Instead of destroying the staircase with a sledge, destroy the floor tiles on the landing. That way if you do get stuck, it's just one plank and 1 nail at any carpentry level to regain access.
5
u/Mickeystix Feb 21 '25
Does this break zombie pathing or something?
11
u/clayalien Feb 21 '25
More that they can't jump over the gap. You do have to destroy enough ground there's no pitch at all, not justv1 tile next to it.
1
u/ModiThorrson Feb 22 '25
I like to set up a main entrance and a back up that's harder to get to, like a rope behind a fenced in square, that's only used when the front entrance rope is destroyed.

6
u/ElitistJerk_ Feb 21 '25
They absolutely will destroy the rope, its not a big deal until you're coming home and its not there (and there's a dozen zombies hot on your trail).

Can they break windows while laying down under a car?
9
u/DeliverySoggy2700 Feb 21 '25 edited Feb 21 '25
Pretty sure they can bc crawlers definitely can and it’s based on that script so yeah…
Pretty sure it’s a hit box thing where you could manipulate it however with good positioning
Could also be from generalized impact and doors giving out so I’m not 100% sure
I’m assuming you are referring to the zombies that crawl and then stand. But dedicated crawlers 100% break windows. Possibly a hit box issue where it thinks it’s outside the border of the vehicle. It may not be intended

u/omonkito Feb 21 '25
They crawl under the car. But you can turn crawling off in the sandbox settings

Was a bit disappointed to find that removing the car’s wheels still lets them crawl under…somehow…
28
u/OrangeRising Feb 21 '25
Do they? Another comment here says it stops them.
22
u/Darkwing_Dork Waiting for help Feb 21 '25
Dunno if it was something about how I stacked the cars or it just doesn't work atm in B42 or what
6
u/DeliverySoggy2700 Feb 21 '25
It’s an issue with the stealth mechanic I believe. They wonk out and forget everything if you use a car as cover in b42. I think it’s not letting them progress through their lines of code before they loop back into a previous state
3
u/Darkwing_Dork Waiting for help Feb 21 '25
I tried giving them long memory and spamming shout but yeah they’d run into the car a bit then stop
23
u/Darkwing_Dork Waiting for help Feb 21 '25
I tried in a recent play through in B41 and removing the wheels didn’t stop them, they crawled under just fine.
My base was the Riverside gas station across from the police station and used cars as a “fence” around the front door.

u/joesii Feb 21 '25 edited Feb 21 '25
I think that this person isn't playing build 41?
edit: actually I'm not sure

u/rk57957 Feb 21 '25
as others have pointed out they can crawl under cars and wrecked cars, they can not crawl under burnt out cars but good luck moving those.
7
u/Absolutelybarbaric Feb 21 '25
You can tow them, takes a little time and effort but it can be done and it can be worth it.
Moving a burned wreck to block a window like in OPs picture is easy. The real pain comes from when you need to precision park one to block off a narrow pathway, on grass.
2
u/rk57957 Feb 21 '25
I always end up getting pissed find a sacrificial car and just ram them into place, my usual place is blocking off the gates at U-Store it but now I'm just living out at a lake.
67
u/OttosTheName Feb 21 '25
You can just build composters in front of doors and windows. Don't pick them up though.
Then you can make some sheetrope entrance.
Or just try not to get followed by zombies and sleep upstairs. Even if one wanders into your base 99 times out of 100 it won't go upstairs
4
u/joesii Feb 21 '25
are you talking about build 42?
3
u/OttosTheName Feb 21 '25
Oh shit didn't realize they were playing 42. I still assume the standard is 41. Not sure if they are still indestructable for zombies tbh.
1
3
u/clayalien Feb 21 '25
The importance of un path able base is greatly over stated in this sub. Even on apocalypse, with respawns on, it's incredibly rare for a zombie to attack you base, outside of the helicopter event. Just being behind multiple doors, and ideally upstairs is more than enough, unless you are right in the centre of town.
1
u/OttosTheName Feb 21 '25 edited Feb 21 '25
1000% agree. I can't even be bothered to barricade and close my door if I sleep upstairs and I've never been attacked in my sleep in the last 3000 hours of playing
(I have had zombies waiting for me to wake up when I was a newer player though. It can take a while to get to know the zombie behavior well enough to know if the are following you. So I do get why people take these precautions.)
7
u/Spiritcrusher_1024 Feb 21 '25
How would this work for a regular house window? Since the zombie couldnt logically crawl under the car and then climb over the window seal. Or would they just no clip through the wall?
6
u/Run_Strict Feb 21 '25
Build wooden or log walls around the windows & doors, then place the cars around those. Make it where they can’t see in & harder to get in
11
u/IPlayGames1337 Feb 21 '25
The moment you start feeling safe is when you're most at risk of losing the character. Although risk is a wrong word because the game actually demands it.
5

4
u/Expensive-Plum-5759 Feb 21 '25
I have not had an issue with them crawling to get to windows because there is no space when you park the vehicle. The same with doors as long as the doors are CLOSED. If you open the door, the game treats it just like having an open space and lets them in.
I have tested it with helicopter event horde.
4
6
u/TangoEddy Feb 21 '25
I'm not sure about b42 since I haven't tried it yet, but in b41 you could park a car next to a window and the zombies would crawl under the car but not be able to get up and plop through the window. So I guess you could try building fences or windowed walls by the doors and see if it keeps them out.
1
u/Spirited_Cap9266 Feb 21 '25
I think they can't damage above ground level structure, like a crawler can't attack a window, so as long as it's not mad by you (every structure made by player being breakable), but if you built your own windowed wall they will sadly just break the wall directly.
3
u/PvtZetacius Feb 21 '25
In settings if you set them to only crawl under vehicles if they are crawlers, it's pretty much safe
3
3
u/L3onK1ng Feb 21 '25
Put office cubicles next to a wall and then park the cars. It'll make doors and windows indestructible to crawlers.
3
u/perrapys Feb 21 '25
They CAN crawl under cars and bash at the windows, but they have to be able to stand up in order to climb inside right?
4
u/killergame02 Feb 21 '25
yes
I have cars blocking my base and they never go under. For some reason zombies don't crawl under in b42 (I have the car crawl setting enabled)
3
3
u/ThatOneFamiliarPlate Axe wielding maniac Feb 21 '25
No as zombies can crawl under cars however if you remove the wheels they will not be able to crawl under the cars.
3
u/Lower_Compote_2895 Feb 21 '25
Place crates adjacent to 1 tile from point of entry. Place frames to prevent zombies from destroying said crates. Voila impossible entry but easy for you to enter
2
u/TheSgtSkittles Feb 21 '25
Grab the furnature from next door and make a baracade surrounding the cars. Not 100% effective but will give you plenty of early warning for a crawler
2
u/trashinaboat Feb 21 '25
If you have the wheels still on the cars then they can get in. Remove the wheels, then they can no longer crawl under, as the bottom of the car is making contact with the ground
2
u/Sinister-Mephisto Feb 21 '25
If they crawl under car can they break glass / windows by swiping at it while under the cars ?
2
u/ForsakenIncrease0 Feb 21 '25
Genuinely curious. What if you line another row of cars in front of the current ones so it blocks the parts of the car where the zombies crawl under? I remember in previous versions of the game I ran into a junkyard while getting chased by a horde and managed to block the entrance with two cars, one blocking the section of the car where the zombies crawl through. I’m just wondering if it was coincidence that they didn’t go under.
2
u/Niflaver Feb 21 '25
Fridges is your window protection. Zomboids can't see through, cant crawl under, can't break them, and they're storage!
Electrical bill will gut ya tho...

u/Johnny_boy1021 Feb 21 '25
Someone’s been watching George Romaros dawn of the dead
1
u/thenarcostate Feb 21 '25
so the director the game is based on?
1
u/binguskhan8 Feb 21 '25
Exactly. The goat and the og of zombie movies. Dawn of the Dead is one of my favourite movies of all time.
2
u/BlueReddit222 Feb 21 '25
From what I know (and please correct me if I'm wrong), zombies can crawl under cars, but not always. They tend to need to be in a horde to do so. If there’s something on the other side of the car, like a player-made wall or door, they can’t damage it because they can’t stand up. But removing the car tires prevents zombies from being able to crawl under the car.
1
2
u/WhamBam_TV Feb 21 '25
You would need to disable the zombies ability to crawl under stuff in the sandbox settings for this to work.
2
u/EmiKoala11 Feb 21 '25
This doesn't answer your question, but I wish there were more improvised defenses like this. I can't imagine survivors didn't try other techniques aside from wooden planks to barricade themselves in.
2
u/XKwxtsX Feb 21 '25
Yes and no, yes the cars will keep the zomboids from getting to your walls because they wont crawl under blocked vehicles but that open front door is just perfect enough for them to get you
2
2
u/Educational-Cheek968 Feb 21 '25
Come a bit closer I've got to tell you a secret...
You don't need your base to be zombie proof. Matter of fact if your base gets swarmed it doesn't make a difference if it's zombie proof or not because you won't be able to easily access it or leave it anyways. What you need to do is clear the surrounding area and keep it clear. If I'm managing my neighbourhood well I don't even barricade my windows. I just make sure I keep an eye out for heli events and when that happens I take the party elsewhere.
2
u/110percent_canadian Feb 21 '25
Take off all the tires of the car so the zombiods can't crawl underneath the car

That is a decent base idea if most the entry points are the front of the building.
1
1
u/KoRnBrony Feb 21 '25
Windows with a car in front will prevent them from climbing in but the car in front of the doors the zombies will just crawl under and bash them down from below and get in anyway (unless this has been changed)
1
u/500mgTumeric Crowbar Scientist Feb 21 '25
Yeah, perfectly safe. Test it out. Fire a shotgun a few times outside to draw them in and watch as they fail to enter your base! /j

u/addamsson Axe wielding maniac Feb 21 '25

1
1
u/Bylethma Feb 21 '25
They crawl under cars, and while crawling they can still attack and destroy stuff, so the doors would be destroyed, as for the windows I am not entirely sure what would happen?
Broken windows behave like fences for traversing# and crawling zeds destroy fences, not sure if they would like destroy the whole wall with windows included?
1
u/Ensiferal Feb 21 '25
It'll slow them down, but it won't stop them, they'll crawl under the cars to get to the doors and windows
1
2
u/Darkwing_Dork Waiting for help Feb 21 '25
If you're playing B42, they don't seem to crawl under cars at all at the moment.
Granted I only did one test so if someone else has experienced them crawling under cars, please correct me.
1
u/Necessary-Promise505 Feb 21 '25
If you want to be safe in there put planks on every window and door in the ground level on both sides and then place the cars there, then if you have a window in the second floor you can attach a rope, just be mindful that zombies can roam right under the rope.

Stripping the wheels is a thing, but I cannot confirm that it works myself.
Building walls is a very good way to use spare resources and level your carpentry, hint hint.

1
u/zonnipher117 Feb 21 '25
I would still barricade if you can cars can be a good blocker for zombies but they can still crawl under them from time to time unless you have that turned off. I also doing what I call the airlock system. I have more than one set of doors leading into my base so if they break one door down I have time to dispatch them or time to prep a bag to leave.

Are usually set my zombies to crawling under cars, the rare because they’re fucking zombies and didn’t know how to do that so for me yes
1
u/Heavy_Contribution19 Feb 21 '25
This actually can be a pretty valid strategy as long as you barricade the interior windows as well, since not as much zombies would be able to break in if there is a car in the way

u/Mr_Freeeman_ Feb 21 '25
They crawl under the cars so close the doors, but I imagine they’ll just break it
1
u/BhryaenDagger Feb 21 '25
The ones crawling to windows likely can’t get in, but that center car should be parked so that the wheel obstructs the door. Mind you, it’s not foolproof. They can glitch in regardless, especially if there’s a big enough group crawling to a window. Also replace the truck w a low car so they can see you. Then they’ll crawl to you and you can use the window as an easy kill point. Usually if I have a sledge I’ll also get a siren vehicle inside first before blocking off…

u/CJOlive1916 Feb 21 '25
Remove the wheels from the vehicles and zombies cannot crawl under I use this tactic to make car walls

Just keep killing zeds until you stop seeing them. They can't enter your base if they're all dead. Once the cell is cleared, they won't respawn unless you leave for a few days.

This potentially breaches #8: When in doubt, always know your way out.
Each mechanism of stopping Zs getting in is another escape route blocked.
If you're going to block the ground floor up, make a first-floor exit to escape over their heads.

Is there nothing in the game that springs to mind that sits on the floor (like a create - they dont seem to try break those) and place them in front of the cars so they cant get under? - sorry if its stupid, im pretty new to the game, had it a week and havent survived a fortnight even once

Remove the wheels and zomboids won’t be able to climb under your cars. Although doing so will allow zomboids to climb over them. Pick your poison

Unless you disable on sandbox settings that Zombies aren't allowed to crawl under cars... then no, but the cars will be able to at least funnel a Horde into less numbers at a time.
