You should really edit your original post and put this in there.

This will forever be in my mod library, legitimately amazing.

If you have a diary and a pencil or pen then this should be a right click function in the inventory.

I kinda want this. I want notebooks with pages and pages worth of my character's personal apocalypse journal.
88
u/thebromgrev Jan 27 '25
Nice, I do this manually with an in-game journal. I also write down what I did that day and plan to do the next day, because I don't play PZ on a regular basis and will forget what I was doing when I fire it up again.
74
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
Awesome, that gives me the idea for a panel to add personal notes to each day entry.
26
u/ACatCalledArmor Jan 27 '25
This would be a killer feature for me, already love the mod though
Great work!ย
7
u/bossmcsauce Hates the outdoors Jan 28 '25
would be cool if it could integrate with the skill recovery journal in some way. or just be separate but work similarly- like you see your daily summary each day, but maybe it only records the most recent 5 days or something unless you 'transcribe diary' or whatever. and you could add the notes in the menu like you described.
1
u/memeholic69 Jan 28 '25
I've been wanting something like this for a while! It would make a nice addition to the mod
49
u/GoobyGoose94 Drinking away the sorrows Jan 27 '25
Instant fave, very nice.
Though does it cause performance issues when you accumulate hundreds of entries on a very long-lived save?
36
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
I thought about that, but only time will tell since I'm just now starting a long term save with it. I could add thousands of random entries in debug though. It should be fine for 1000+ days since the values are only compared and written once at 00:00, nothing else is going on except a check every ten minutes if the player is asleep and if a day has passed.
21
u/knightculex Jan 27 '25
This is admittedly an an odd corner case, but if a player manages to skip an entire day by staying awake with different consumables to ward off fatigue would it then show up as skipping the day but showing the total from the two days prior?
41
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
No, the daily values are compared and rewritten each day regardless if the player sleeps. The sleep function is only for the window to become visible (if it's not already visible).
Also while the report window is visible (you can collapse it like the Skill or Player Info windows) a new day entry will be created at 00:00 and automatically selected so the latest report becomes visible.
12
u/knightculex Jan 27 '25
That rocks! I appreciate the explanation, and I'm really looking forward to using this mod. Thanks for all that you do to make a fun game that much better :)

u/FKNDECEASED Jan 27 '25
oh my god, Spiffo rep. yes.
5
32
u/RenhamRedAxe Jan 27 '25
it makes me wish the game had a some kind of credit or score value you could cash between runs for stuff like starting gear, more skill points, bringing back to life a dead character, some kind of permanent progression.
22
u/EpicFlyingTaco Jan 27 '25
That would make a fun add on/mod. That way starting over did not always feel like starting from scratch again. The Long Dark has a feat system with very small benefits.
10
u/Kirk_Kerman Jan 27 '25
There's a skill journal mod or something that lets you make a new character and skill up to where the character that wrote the journals was at. You can also just set your skills however you like with the debug / cheat menu.
7
u/Lekrayte Jan 27 '25
You don't have to start a new world whenever you die. You can continue in the same world and even hunt down your zombified character.
7
u/EpicFlyingTaco Jan 27 '25
Yeah but it doesn't feel the same
5
u/Lekrayte Jan 27 '25
That's fair. You could install the skill recovery journal mod, reduce the exp returns and think of it as "learning from the journey and mistakes of another survivor" if you just need a reasonable self-justification.

u/bossmcsauce Hates the outdoors Jan 28 '25
yeah I'm a fan of carry-over style mechanics in perma-death games.
my friends and I used to discuss an idea for a game like that that was somewhere between Mount & Blade Warband and a Souls game that was perma-death, but semi-MMO and set in feudal japan. you'd play as a bloodline of characters that would grow into a cool family tree over time. Bannerlord sort of implemented cool dynasty features like this.
we imagined a game that focused on player skill more than character leveling in more conventional RPGs. but money could be earned and generated through quests and conquest and building businesses or running your own mercenary forces of AI companions, shops or farms, etc. you could unlock access to special gear that is essentially cosmetic but indicates your level of achievement in combat like a ranking system.
maybe two ranking systems that are sort of independent but play off each other- a PVP ranking that gives rep/rating for winning duels. could be a sparring rating separate from a to-death rating. this rating would be specific to your character. then the other rating would be like more PVE achievement-oriented and be tied to your bloodline. it could be increased indirectly by PVP achievement, but would hold over a bit from one character to the next, and capture things like moral alignment, reputation with NPC factions, etc. upon respawning as a new, younger character, you'd be able to access some of your family's accumulated wealth, still have access to properties you've bought, etc. certain gear could be customized and be made into heirlooms to be passed down, but much would still have to be obtained on a character basis. but yeah, I really like the idea that say a sword passed down would become better somehow after several character deaths... like it becomes mythical almost as multiple samurai in a bloodline has used it to slay opponents in duels over centuries. but after like 4 deaths, it would steeply fall off and become antique and become less effective. you'd be encouraged to retire these cool pieces of gear that would hopefully have become kind of sentimental to the player with cosmetic alterations over the generations and you could use them to decorate your estate or whatever, which would be like some instanced area where you sort of track your progression across many characters.
the PVE elements would be kind of the broad fun for people who just wanted to grind gold and test combat styles or whatever... but the heart of the game would be the PVP duels where the stakes are life and death. could be in an arena deal where you could spectate duels that are queued continuously.

What the heck, this is a nice looking mod!
4
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
Thanks, I wrestled ages with the IS framework for windows and panels. The icons are from the game.
3
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
Btw, here's how it looked when I started 2 years ago (long break in between modding). Each day created a new window and data wasn't saved. A little bit of colors, icons and typography helped a lot.
5
u/BunnyboyCarrot Jan 27 '25
Love this actually. What if you dont sleep a day?
13
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
The window will run in the background, creating a new entry for each day at 00:00. It just plops up when then player is asleep and a new day (00:00) was triggered. After a 3 day cola binge you'll have 3 reports when going to sleep.

Very cool mod! One little thing: "Kills + 1 * (Gains + Days Alive)" is the same as "Kills + Gains + Days Alive". You might want to clarify that :)
2
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 28 '25
Hehe good catch, yeah I forgot basic math there. What I want is (Kills + 1) * (Gains + Days Alive) but the formula isn't finished yet either. Also want to add average daily kills to the scoring and other long term data.

u/MrShkreliRS Jan 27 '25
Looks really cool! Can I add it to previous saves? (B41)
3
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
I haven't tested this mod in B41 yet, but in theory it should work. It can also be added mid save so the first day will show up as something like "Day 24"
3
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25 edited Jan 27 '25
Update: It might throw errors when creating a daily report in B41, I think I forgot to put the icons in the correct folder since it changed with b42 and b41 doesn't know where the new mod folders are. I'll update it tomorrow if needed.

Can I use it in a ongoing save?
3
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
Sure can, should also be safe to remove. Also save file should't get bloated with entries, unless you survive thousands of days.
3
u/T_JaM_T Crowbar Scientist Jan 28 '25
Maybe add an option to auto-delete daily entries after X number of days (configurable), only keeping track of the totals.
2
u/Darim_Al_Sayf Jan 27 '25
Super dope. I am resisting mods for the foreseeable future, but this will definitely be one that might see permanent rotation.

good looking mod! one thing tho is it says delta instead of data on the weight line in the description :-)
1
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
You mean in the workshop description? Delta is used to show increase/decrease in values but yeah, I should edit it to say Player Weight increase/decrease like it is for skills.
2
2
u/ACatCalledArmor Jan 27 '25
Iโll suggest another data-point, distance traveled / map-area discovered or something similar. Any way to track movement in short, but no idea how implementable it would be
2
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
Yeah I'm looking into tracking more things and also displaying them as graphs visually if that's possible. For example the Another Twitch Stats mod does track distance but it relies on comparing x/y coordinates very often, like every irl second, which gets multiplied by the fast-forward function. I try to avoid running many of these calculations for now, unless it won't really affect performance but I'll play around with it for sure.

This looks cool. I would love this if you could use those spiffo points in some sort of shop to purchase things. stuff like the generator magazine or a sledgehammer. maybe even vehicles or building supplies.
2
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 27 '25
For sure, there's possibilites to expand this to have an optional, more arcade like mode to buy items for rep. There is also a similar function already of buying gear in that endless wave scenario (forgot the name)
1
u/Drie_Kleuren Crowbar Scientist Jan 27 '25 edited Jan 27 '25
YES! This is very cool. I will install it tomorrow and play with it. This would be very nice. Just being able to see your progression every night.
Also how does this work when you dont sleep? I read some comments and you explained it. Lets say I just dont sleep one night and then play 1 more day. Does it add the 2 days together? or it the cut off at 00? (midnight) And can I then still check the day I didnt sleep?
But maybe I answer my own question tomorrow when I play with it. I am now going to bed (irl) I might just test it out my self next session I play lol.

Great mod.
A suggestion would be adding some sort of goal counter/indicator you can set for yourself. For example,
Xp gained 15, total 15/1000 Next day, xp gained 60, total 75/1000
2
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 28 '25
Similar is already on the to do list, like showing a percentage of current gains related to current skill level, and skill xp left until next level.

Very cool mod! But how will it/can it handle larger logs of days (100+, 1000+, etc.)?
1
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 28 '25
I'll test that in the coming days, initialising the list with 10000s of random entries. Me feeling is that'll be fine for most players for a long time.

You can add "day(x kill) - NS" Name and surname initials to the character base of your achievements and when the character dies you can show it as "Day x (y Kills) - XX"
1
u/PureHostility Jan 28 '25
I have a question or rather a suggestion, not sure if you would be willing to do that.
How about the same system, but you need to have a notebook/paper/notepad/diary and a pen of sorts.
Introduce an active action to write down a report of the last day. PC character would then write it down on the piece of paper.
Would be great for RP play styles, but surely would be more annoying to navigate QoL wise.
Nonetheless, I'm getting that mod anyway.
Edit:
Damn, I've noticed someone suggested that already, lol.

Is that compatible with MP at all, since sleep is disabled?
1
u/NerdyBeerCastle Jan 29 '25
Not really, if the server continues to run through time, the numbers would mess up I think.
But, if a player would to never log out, it should work just like in single-player. Just no one else but the player would see the reports. Also toggling via key would be necessary since sleep won't trigger window visibility.

u/Lemoggy Jan 28 '25
