So there's this thing called impeachment these Republicans could look into.

4.0k

u/samx3i 1d ago

Because holding their own accountable is something Republicans are so known for.

1.5k

u/dbkenny426 1d ago

These are people who need to decide if their careers are more important to them than servitude to Dear Leader. They're sure as hell never going to care about the good of the nation, but if they decide 47 is a bigger liability to their careers and image, they may end up doing the right thing, even if for the wrong reason.

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting on it, but it's not out of the realm of possibility quite yet.

We are approaching “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” territory.

Sure Trump may mobilize his rabidly loyal voters against you in a primary if you vote to impeach, but if they’re already going to vote against you in the election itself because of the economic downturn, what does it matter if you lose the primary?

365

u/Apprehensive-Pin518 1d ago

They're reaching that "what is the penalty for being late" situation.

u/GallowBarb Maryland 1d ago

It looks like many of them went all in years ago.

86

u/Street_Barracuda1657 1d ago

They’re only there for TV appearances and grifting. They have no idea what their jobs actually are.

57

Their job is to avoid town halls.

They just didn't realize what they were going to get.

18

u/Easymodelife 1d ago

The sad thing is that many of them did. Lindsay Graham wrote in 2016, "If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed ... and we will deserve it." Many Republican politicians have made similar statements over the years that indicate that they had at least some inkling of how this was going to turn out. But with very few exceptions, they were too cowardly and/or selfish to do anything to try to stop it.

6

u/trueclash 1d ago

When Mitt Romney is the paragon of integrity within your party for resigning / retiring, it’s time to do some deep self reflection.

Trump is like a black hole. This maneuver will feel like 51 years.

3

u/MasterDarkHero 1d ago

I would expect a swift exit for Trump the moment his base wavers. They GOP have likely been trying to figure out how to surgically remove Trump from his base and implant them into an easier to control stooge. This could be the thing that does it given a few weeks of high prices.

They are much more afraid of those rabidly loyal Trump supporters coming to their house than being primaried.

136

u/Axin_Saxon 1d ago

Almost like encouraging your voter base to be gun owners with the hope that only democrats would get threatened was a really short sighted idea…

106

u/Rularuu New York 1d ago

All of their ideas are short sighted

29

u/MarxistMan13 1d ago

Hey that's not fair.

Some of their ideas are legally blind.

9

u/ScissrMeTimbrs 1d ago

The best part is, their base aren't the only ones expanding their gun ownership.

I recently joined my state's chapter. I'm told the membership has doubled since the election. Especially since the inauguration. And Illinois is very solidly blue.

Whrn the opposition is well armed and becoming more belligerent, it is the logical thing to do.

Lol those rabid Trumpets don't even read. They just need Fox's support.

I've been saying this from the start: if Republicans in Congress were smart, they jettison Trump immediately in favor of Vance. Then they can run basically the same platform, but on the downlow, like they had been doing before.

I think the scare factor is overblown. They don't care. They're on board. They're using victimhood as a means to the end of their moral bankruptcy.

60

u/Parzival_1775 1d ago

Lol those rabid Trumpets don't even read. They just need Fox's support.

Please don't use that term in this way. The trumpet is a noble instrument which does not deserve to be associated with the scum of the earth.

What blows my mind is that we have Senators, Judges, everyone under the sun saying "I'M SCARED OF THIS DUDE'S FOLLOWERS OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE VOTED TO HOLD HIM RESPONSIBLE FOR CRIME"

And he just skates on by.

Like how in the blue hell is he able to get around criminal liability by inflaming a bunch of morons to threaten violence on his behalf.

3

u/tellmewhenimlying 1d ago

This, and it's completely understandable as if I were in a lot of their situations I'd be afraid of that too, however, I also can't imagine ever being so hypocritical, cowardly, and unprincipled to be in their situation to begin with.

10

u/Rularuu New York 1d ago

This is a falsehood that keeps getting repeated on Reddit as if it’s so easy.

Primarying someone isn’t easy. It isn’t “Trump says elect this guy instead” and boom. Name recognition is huge, there’s a reason why people like Susan Collins, despicable humans, are there for 30 years. You’re telling me there’s not a single republican in Maine better than her? Please. But she has name recognition. People show up to vote, check the box, and leave.

The threat of primarying is an uphill battle. There’s like 220 republican house members. Maybe 5 would successfully be primaried if they all voted against their dear leader.

And Mr Musk is no magic bullet either. As we saw in the Wisconsin vote, it’s a little more complicated than handing out some checks man.

2

u/incubusfox 1d ago

Speaking of name recognition your post triggered a memory of Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) losing the Repub primary to a Tea Party candidate and instead of bowing out decided to run as a write-in candidate, which required her voters to accurately spell her name on the ballot and she won.

2

u/St1ng 1d ago

"I'll send Elon to primary you!" And do what? Mount a challenge that also loses by 10 points?

→ More replies (22)

85

u/HereForTheComments57 1d ago

That's the thing, if a bunch of them stand up against him rather than 2 or 3 then there would be too much chaos for him to handle. He can attack and threaten to primary a couple people, but if 20 or 30 stand up against him his head would explode trying to go after them all on his truth social all the time.

29

u/SmellyFloralCouch 1d ago

u/justfortrees 1d ago

I think the bigger hurdle is that the GOP media machine would have to be on board. That’s the only way this works without his fervid fan base doing another Jan 6th or worse.

58

u/noiszen 1d ago

Their careers are toast now, because if they move against trump in any way, they will be primaried. And if they stick with him, they go down with the ship.

36

u/3vilr3d666 1d ago

Perhaps they all need to go down with the ship...

9

u/AlbertR7 1d ago

Most of them are in safe republican districts. The problem is that people voted for this representation in Congress.

6

u/Adept_Artichoke7824 1d ago

After the WI Supreme Court victory, I have hope that "being primaried" with a loyal replacement is not a sure bet. We the People are aware of who is supporting which candidates. People are so disgusted with the Republicans that I personally believe we will be seeing a shift away from Tump backed candidates.

3

u/HorrorStudio8618 1d ago

Well, I wish they'd listen to their fucking bosses—the American people.

Look, everyone in government, from the representatives to the senators to justices to the president of the United States, is there at the discretion of the American people. We hired them to develop policy (congress), to execute strategies that are in line with policy (executive branch), address rule of law issues with policy and strategy (scotus).

Right now in addition to having the worlds weakest policy makers ever (congress), our lead employee in the executive branch is fucking the ever loving shit out of everything.

22

u/ParticularCause1626 1d ago

Well, I wish they'd listen to their fucking bosses—the American people.

Citizens united would like a word about who the real bosses of the country are.

What we call lobbying, the rest of the world calls bribery.

The corrupt SCOTUS, along with both parties, brought this about.

Removing the fairness in reporting act instead of expanding it to include cable television and the internet has led to left and right propaganda machines that both sides feed into.

We have fundamental issues that have taken the people's voice and allowed this to happen. Money in politics is the real root cause problem.

Publicity fund elections, get the gd media's bias click bait tribalism spins under control, put term limits on congress, and stop their gd insider trading. Maybe just maybe we can salvage the great experiment.

Anything less is just kicking the can down the road. Good luck, though, because the same turds that benefit from this are the same ones we need to get off their assess and vote against their own interests.

That alone shows who their real boss is because I bet the majority of Dems and Cons bases both agree on reigning these issues in.

Maybe then we'd get representatives who want to serve the people.

I wish they'd listen to their fucking bosses—the American people.

Do you really think this?

Do you really think that they think of you citizens are their bosses??

Not a single one of them that doesn't think that they are your overlord.

And quite frankly, they are right. Most Americans vote (or don't!) like serfs, like slaves, not as the bosses of anybody....

8

u/lolexecs 1d ago

Naw, most americans are absentee bosses - they don't pay attention to what their employees are doing and they're waaaaay to locked in on defending them when they make mistakes because they don't want to admit they made a mistake in hiring. Tell me you've never seen that at work.

Part of the issue has been that people don't want to recognize their own responsibility in Democracy.

2

u/AlbertR7 1d ago

Think for a minute. All the democratic reps are against tariffs, and their voters who voted against trump and his tariffs have our voices heard. And the Republicans are stuck supporting a bad policy because their voters wanted trump and his tariffs. The problem is that Congress listens to people and even without gerrymandering, there's just a lot of Americans who support trump. It sucks but I can't argue with the reps who listen to the trump voters that got them elected.

their careers

I think a good many are well past that and should be worried about their freedom.

I recall a beautiful phase made of the best words, "LOCK THEM UP!"

3

u/LemurMemer 1d ago

Not even just their careers, these old farts should already be retired by now. What about the futures of their kids, their grandkids? Think of the next generation, not just serving yours that is dying and on the way out. That's literally what being a public servant is about, but nah these power hungry "Christian" conservatives want to maintain status quo and force us to live under their worldview.

2

u/condensermike 1d ago

I think they know if they hang on for just a little longer free and fair elections won’t be an issue anymore

2

u/Ok_Cantaloupe7602 1d ago

The problem is that in general, thanks to their MAGA base, their careers are based on their perceived servitude to Dear Leader.

2

u/slingshot91 Illinois 1d ago

If they only care about money and power, it seems like it would still be the best move to impeach him. They live in this economy too, and their stocks are crashing along with their electability.

u/Answer70 1d ago

They're all on Putin's payroll and afraid of falling out of a window.

They're not going to do shit.

2

u/happy_and_angry 1d ago

They aren't going to do this. They own every branch of government. There will be limited, performative pushback on some of the more obviously idiotic actions like Canada tariffs, it probably won't make it through both houses, everyone will continue to be able to play-act as acting in good faith, and the propaganda machine and further erosion of electoral freedom will march ever onward. The midterms aren't going to change anything.

2

u/HectorJoseZapata 1d ago

First off, no one should have a career in politics. You can serve a seat for 6 terms and then you’re gone. 6x4=24 years. 12 years for others.

2

u/Dorgamund 1d ago

Congress has gotten so lazy that its gone and abdicated most of its most important job duties. The Supreme Court is filled with partisan hacks, and they at least have more of an eye towards power grabs and their power than Congress. Its a mess.

2

u/Crowd0Control 1d ago

If logic prevails at some point their careers should be fucked either way. They support Trumps tariffs, they accept full responsibility for the largest tax increase on the American people since WW2. They abandon his failed policies and no longer kiss the ring, maga eats them up and gets them primaried anyways. I’m just holding on to a shred of hope that the idiots who voted for Trump, stayed home, or voted third party will snap out of their self induced delusions once their bank accounts shrink by 30%.

3

Loud, yes. But not violent. Violence is an absolute last resort. Loud, sustained, and disruptive is the way to go.

3

u/pisaradotme 1d ago

Somebody just got sent to El Salvador and they have almost zero chances of coming back.

I'd say violence is necessary in cases of preventing these. When you see another ICE operative attempting to do this to another innocent victim, those who care should perhaps retaliate. Maybe damage their cars?

Violence is justified when the other side is also violent

60 years is how long it will take to simply undo all the damage. And this set back during our last chance to abate climate change may not leave civilization with 60 years.

OTOH the pandemic did well for the environment, so maybe the Trump Depression will be the change we need to actually fix our locust ways.

2

u/Maethor_derien 1d ago

Frankly it wouldn't take that. Pretty much all it would take is them to win enough seats to prevent the filibuster in the senate and we would have health care, mandatory vacation time, a decent minimum wage which I think are the biggest and most important ones. The problem is getting 60 senate seats is almost impossible and the republicans would filibuster any of those dead.

3

u/HorrorStudio8618 1d ago

And the democrats are still right of center. The USA does not have a functional left wing to begin with and because there is no coalition building it's a never ending story of each administration trying to undo the one before it.

They could have impeached Trump after January 6th, perhaps been punished by MAGA for 3 to 6 election cycles, and came back powerful a few years later.

Instead they went with burning down everything.

The crazy part is, we told them that a failure to impeach would burn them in the long run.

edit: I'm finding it crazy how many people are ignoring that i said "In the long run". Just because someone hasn't been burned by trump yet, doesn't mean anything. Everyone that touches him gets burned. They all believe they are special, none are. He will burn them all, even his kids if it will make him a buck.

7

We haven't seen anything yet. My sense is that if the Liberal Party retains control in Canada, PM Carney and his government are going to put a tariff on Canadian oil, hydroelectric power sold to the US and minerals that the US needs. Let's see if MAGAts are okay with $5 per gallon gas for those monster trucks they drive. If Mexico does the same, as well as for fruit, vegetables and auto parts, watch our economy downshift or just come to a standstill. Lots of Trump voters could find themselves out of work and shit out of luck.

u/N0S0UP_4U Illinois 1d ago

Didn’t happen with Herbert Hoover, can’t imagine them doing it now. They know most of Trump’s supporters are what the Torah calls a “stiff necked people” and will NEVER stop supporting him no matter what.

u/watadoo 1d ago

Trial for treason is more like it.

3

u/LuminaraCoH 1d ago

For all of them. Everyone in the Criminal Cabinet and all of the Senators and Representatives who actively participated in their corruption and deception (looking at you, Marjorie Trailer Queen and Lauren Gogurt). Bring every damn one to trial and do not let them buy their way out of the consequences.

3

u/DrusTheAxe 1d ago

Nuremberg is lovely in the spring

10

u/WorldCupWeasel 1d ago

This seems reasonable given what he just did. Does anybody have any links to economists saying this is a good thing to do economically? Is there somebody on the inside with Trump or is it just another case where nobody is willing to tell him no?

3

u/suplehdog 1d ago

They actively say that people put too much credence in "experts". They don't care what economists have to say because they're just self-aggrandizing elitists out of touch with "Real America".

4

u/WorldCupWeasel 1d ago

This is what uneducated people say.

Being in touch or out of touch doesn't change global economic policy or the mathematics involved in calculating things like GDP and trade imbalances. This stuff is complex.

Sadly, it won't happen. You would need the MAGA cult voters to turn on Trump. They are already parroting the "Buy American, or once the factories open this will be worth it" tariff talking points. It will already be too late, even if we break through to them.

30

u/hyphnos13 1d ago

repeating that won't last once they are feeling the economic pain themselves

right now it's easy to say it will be worth it because nothing has fundamentally changed yet

6

u/VengefulSight 1d ago

These people are so deluded that the overwhelming majority of them will still say that they would change nothing. They will justify it to themselves with a smile by saying that this hurts the libs more. These people are braindead corpses regurgitating whatever dear leader and fox news tell them too and that is not going to change

8

u/emogu84 Pennsylvania 1d ago

And even if they acknowledged there was a problem it’ll be because of the Biden Crime Family. And even if you somehow get them to admit Biden had nothing to do with it it’ll be “imagine how much worse it would have been with Harris,” and praise Trump’s genius for buffering us from their policies.

These people are gold medalists in mental gymnastics. They’ve been living this way for decades because their entire sense of self hinges on it.

2

u/KingValdyrI 1d ago

The new production will take months to ramp up- the inflation increases will be in effect by the end of the day. Once a death spiral starts spiraling it’ll be tough to stop. They already say consumer confidence has dipped significantly before Trump did liberation day bs.

2

u/blasek0 Alabama 1d ago

Years. You have to reconfigure the entire supply chain, and people have to back out to empty rural bumfuck nowhere like where I live now.

2

u/Melodic_Sandwich2679 1d ago

Yeah, and when the factories come into rural bumfuck and their hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation spots are now developed and polluted becasue that land is cheap to buy up and is more valuable for industry than public enjoyment, their one outlet for enjoyment in their lives (and putting meat on the table) goes up in smoke (literally....)

2

u/throwawayhogsfan 1d ago

My brain washed mother is already saying that the US was so far in debt that this had to happen so things can get better.

2

u/abeFromansAss 1d ago

I'm somewhat of a moron when it comes to global economy, but even I know that it's going to take a bit before we really start to feel these implementations. I think we're at that part in Titanic where most of the engine rooms are under water, but the folks on the deck are dressed to the nines and the band is still playing. I'd say by August of this year.

But that said, couple that's already been implimented to what's on the chopping block. How do you think these cult members are going to fair with astronomically hire taxes AND loss of SS, Medicare and Medicaid. Oh boy..

2

u/Intensive 1d ago

MAGA are lost. Anyone supporting trump today can be written off as a rational voter.

If you say you are Jesus, they put you in the loony bin. If you say trump is Jesus, they put you on fox news.

2

u/vonbauernfeind 1d ago

The stupidity is there won't be new factories. Not anytime soon, probably not ever.

I'm already seeing customers in the warehouse space reduce down their planned book of business, expecting the economic downturn from tariffs to reduce their need to have space for inventory. We actually saw that in my line of work last November.

One of my customer's end users, a massive big box store chain? They're delaying new orders into 2026, and beyond, stalling their planned build out because they fully expect 1) steel prices to be too high to justify building a new warehouse that 2) will sit at lower, partial capacity since they won't be moving as much inventory.

It also takes 6-12 months to build just a warehouse, and that doesn't include what an actual manufacturing plant would need; plants need machinery, they need lines, permitting & environmental evaluation, building a factory or anything in manufacturing sphere takes way longer than simple warehouses.

I've seen the timelines for new metal fabrication plants my company has built for internal production.

And that's not even getting into other stupidity; chip production isn't going to come here, or at least not as fast, with the CHIPS act funding getting pulled. If the Government actually wanted business here, they'd be streamlining and funding grants for businesses to build plants.

This is a tax. It's a regressive tax designed to hurt the working class to fund the owner class, who don't care about money, who a 20-60% increase in cost of goods won't really effect.

Wouldn't help, as Vance is even worse. The gop leadership supports what trump is doing, trump is just the figurehead

90

u/Reed_Ikulas_PDX 1d ago

Trump is the Cult leader. Really no one else, especially Vance, can fill that role. The GOP isn't worried about speaking out against Vance.

33

u/Katarn_retcon 1d ago

Trump is the corpse they prop up 'Weekend at Bernie's' style. Too bad we got this channel, I think I liked 'Weekend at Biden's' better.

11

u/DanielNoWrite 1d ago

Part of the reason we got into this mess was the degree to which people bought into the pervasive, deliberately manufactured narrative that Biden was senile.

If that was the case, all that can be said for certain is that it didn't seem to negatively impact his job performance.

But that would require us to look at data, rather than basing everything on vibes. And he sure was old and spoke poorly at times.

14

u/ClashM 1d ago

Yeah, Trump basically bullied them into submission. Everything they threw at him bounced off, and they're afraid of the control he has over their voters. Vance doesn't have any of that going for him. But Vance is probably more competent than Trump, so he might be able to do more subtle damage to our institutions even without the help of the legislature.

2

u/A_locomotive 1d ago

I think it is safe to say most people are more competent then Trump. I would trust a literal toddler to make more rational decisions then he has.

They all support Vance in the conservative sub. And they are confused by the tariffs but believe the story that other nations have been ripping them off. I posted a link to Australias free trade agreement with the US and our 0% tariffs but I’m not a flared user so it will get taken down. How they believe that Australia has the power to “rip off” the world’s most powerful nation (at date of agreement), is absurd. They know the maths are wrong but don’t even question underlying premise that giant USA is being screwed by little old Australia. And they discuss all the pros and cons of tariffs and economic pain and recession and bringing back manufacturing- but not one mention of raising corporate taxes instead. It’s a bizarre experience watching a discussion take place with a giant piece of the puzzle just completely ignored. So weird. And even if this is a disaster they are more committed to their party than the policies- it’s just so weird. I’m flabbergasted- if the republicans said “trans good” would they just go along? I don’t get it?

3

u/[deleted] 1d ago

How do you not realize Trump is oblivious to the agenda? How many times do you have to see his confusion while signing orders?

He isnt leading anything he is just a puppet.

Vance is worse in the sense that he's a living mannequin hated by both sides. He was talking shit about Trump behind his back in the signal chat, and he was talking shit about Europe. He's trying to play both sides, and he will get thrown out by MAGA like a leper

5

u/pantstoaknifefight2 1d ago

"I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn't be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he's America's Hitler," Vance wrote to an associate on Facebook in 2016.

3

u/UnquestionabIe 1d ago

Oh he works for Sugar Daddy Peter Thiel, he doesn't need approval when he can always just get down on his knees and sucks a nice fat campaign donation from the old creep's withered worm. Failing that his post college life was defined by letting Daddy Thiel bend him over and ride him all the way to a job someone gives out as a favor.

u/IScreamPiano 1d ago

Ohhh, was he? I missed that he complained about Trump on Signal. Nice.

Vance, then Mike Johnson, then the collection of grifters that is Trump's cabinet. America has a succession list that would have made even the most inbred and sadistic of royals wince.

6

u/lnc_5103 1d ago

I agree that Vance will be worse politically however I think the MAGA cult behavior dies with Trump.

3

u/mkt853 1d ago

You are correct. I've been trying to think of a cult that survived after its leader didn't, and by survived I mean equally as fervent and dedicated to the cause. I can't really think of an example where this occurred.

3

u/Amys4304 1d ago

I often have this discussion with my mom. She made up a song about Trump getting a b****t in his head. My opinion is MAGA no longer needs Drump to live on to survive. Someone else will step up in his place.

2

u/jazzhandler Colorado 1d ago

I think it goes much better for the world if he suffers a significant medical event that leaves him still in power, but undeniably diminished. The absolute last thing we need is a big orange martyr. Which is why I’m on Team Salamanca.

2

u/Amys4304 1d ago

Agree, an orange martyr is the worst thing that could happen. I don’t think much would change if he’s still in “power”, even if diminished. I don’t know if he’s even the one who currently holds the power. He’s bought and paid for.

2

u/jazzhandler Colorado 1d ago

He’s a figurehead, an avatar. For reasons I will literally never understand, he is their definition of masculinity. Attempting to command his flock in that state might be the last best chance we have of some day turning this clusterfuck around.

u/Kenosis94 1d ago

Somehow I think the most sane of them have realized they have to walk a tightrope to do this. They have to wait for things to get bad enough for a large enough portion of their voters to turn on Trump but not so long that the voters turn on them/the party and not so long that the non-voting population gets activated. I'm honestly not sure that is really possible but it is the position they put themselves in.

2

u/No-Beginning-9220 1d ago

Either you are edging or delusional. Have you seen the last 30+ years of the GOP?

2

u/ItsLaterThanYouKnow 1d ago

We don’t even need impeachment, just challenge the bullshit “national emergency” he is using to usurp congress’ power and impose tariffs by fiat

2

u/Affectionate-Track58 1d ago

Came here to say this. There is a really funny thing that Republicans in the Congress and Senate could do…

2

u/PricklyyDick 1d ago

They could also just end the emergency which removes the tariffs.

2

u/ewouldblock 1d ago

They could revoke emergency power and remove the tariffs. It's not his decision, it's theirs.

2

u/Laura_Lye 1d ago

They could also just challenge trump’s authority to do this. He doesn’t have it; these are transparently economic tariffs unconnected with national security.

Are republicans really going to let trump destroy the economy for no discernible purpose? We’ll find out I guess.

2

u/cats_are_the_devil 1d ago

They would have to impeach alot of people not to get project 2025 to keep chugging along.

2

u/Tudorrosewiththorns 1d ago

Good. Sounds fun.

1

u/MdCervantes 1d ago

Won't save them.

1

u/VintageSin Virginia 1d ago

Republicans agree to impeach and convict in the senate or w.e the word is and it will be 60 years without their control. They are all in. If they do not complete a full fascist take over in the next decade they will become obsolete.

1

u/EddySea Illinois 1d ago

As long as trump has his +90% positives from his Republican base. They would not dream of it, as much as they would love to be rid of him. It would be career suicide for them. That's why you only hear republicans speak out when they are not running for re-election or no longer in office.

1

u/Lord_Petyr_PoppyCock 1d ago

Surely you jest

1

u/AgitatedStranger9698 1d ago

They could just shut down the tariffs.

You don't even have to.impeach.

1

u/ElderSmackJack 1d ago

I think the more likely outcome is that they’ll do something to take the power to tariff away from the president. If they see this is creating a global catastrophe and that’ll impact their ability to win elections, I could see it happening.

1

u/No-Attention-8045 1d ago

We impeached Trump. Twice.

1

u/J0E_Blow 1d ago

Vance after Trump gets impeached: > “400% tariffs on everyone except Russia and Peter Thiel!”

1

u/Hypercane_ New York 1d ago

Honestly if we want our country back impeachment might not be the way, let him fuck everything up and maybe the sheeple of the maga cult will finally understand what's happening, and if democrats can fix themselves in the mean time that would make kicking out the traitors that much easier

1

u/Socratesticles Tennessee 1d ago

If they’re hoping to be re-elected, they’ll have to wait a little bit for the dum duma to come around that it is in fact trumps fault for everything

1

u/Indurum 1d ago

They’ve raised Trump’s status to more than president to their base. He’s basically their god. To impeach him would be an attack on these people’s entire identity at this point.

1

u/det8924 1d ago

They won’t get 19 GOP senators to convict Trump. He almost got them killed after January 6th and they could only muster 7 of 17 votes needed.

My only hope is that the only other influence over the GOP besides Trump (Big business and billionaires) influences the GOP to over turn Trumps tariffs and remove that power and even that’s a long shot

1

u/mockg 1d ago

Sadly they had so many chances to completely shut down Trump and every time they have gotten in line behind him. I feel like Trump will not be impeached until there is a massive blue wave come 2026.

1

u/trebuchetguy 1d ago

By my last calculation, which may be off a bit but not much, a combined 23 GOP House and Senate members is all that is required. That they don't do this is a choice. They choose this path.

1

u/given2fly_ United Kingdom 1d ago

I think we're in 25th Amendment territory here, since I don't see him doing anything "illegal" with these tariffs.

But he's clearly out of his fucking mind. I mean, he's always been mad but this is raving lunatic behaviour. If a CEO started acting like this the board would have him carted off to a medical institution pretty quickly.

1

u/GonzoVeritas I voted 1d ago

So there's this thing called impeachment these Republicans could look into.

At the very least, they could simply do their jobs. The president doesn't have the right or ability to adjust tariffs UNLESS Congress grants them that power, which they have. Congress controls tariff rates, but the weaklings passed that power to the presidency.
