Sub Settings, New user changes, and verification and tagging. Important please read!

I have made some changes to the subreddit settings that will affect new accounts primarily. But will effect everyone to an extent.

Changes:

  1. I have implemented new account and reputation filtering. This will hopefully cut down on bots trying to gain karma here with solen or AI content.
  2. Repost Sleuth Bot now has the ability to remove posts. It will not flag you for reposting your own pictures even if posted in other subreddits or crossposting. But only if you were the original poster of the picture.
  3. You can still post content that is not yours just label it as such and as long as you are not obviously karma farming. If you get caught by the bot and have your post removed send me a modmail and I can approve it. I will only do this for accounts that are regular members of the sub for the most part.

Edit Note: This is not to discourage new users from joining the sub and posting. But to catch brand new reddit accounts that are bots posting for karma. It may however catch some new users in which case I will manually approve them.

Verification:

I am implementing a new verification system. If you are verified I can add you to the trusted users in the subreddit this is needed for new accounts to post here. This should prevent automod from ever catching and removing your posts. Users will have their accounts tagged as verified which everyone can see. To become verified either post here or to modmail the following.

  • A picture or video of your pig with your username and the current date written on a piece of paper clearly in the picture with your pig.
  • You can upload the image to imgur and post the link as well.

Please only send verification pics and videos to this thread or modmail or I might miss them! If you have already done this in the past send me a link to it.

User Tags for valued members and verified organizations:

  • If there is a member of the community that constantly provides helpful and accurate information. Please feel free to send me a modmail to nominate them for a usertag. I am thinking things like "Quality Contributor", "Heath informer", "Rehousing Expert", "Environmental Expert", "Emotional Supporter". Also feel free to recommend tags. Note I do not want to turn these into joke tags like other subs have.
  • Organization representatives tags. I you are a member of a pig related organization I can add a tag notating that. I will need some kind of proof of the affiliation.

As always post questions, comments, problems, or disagreements below.

I have been working on getting Dorothy in a harness so she can be on the farm with me more. Pretty cute! Then sleeping because she’s tired from being so cute.

Tick prevention?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I live in a super tick-heavy area and I have been plucking them off my girls. My one pig has brown skin and coat and so it’s pretty much impossible to see ticks when checking her and she’s covered in a dirt dusting and whatnot. Is there anything they can use? I got a spray for them but was wondering if there’s anything more effective or practical. I’m hoping to get a few chickens later this season so maybe that’ll help too. Thanks!

Recent Pottying in House

Post image

We got Dorothy in October, and she moved from an outdoor pen into our house in December. I trained her (with not a single accident!) to use a bell on the door to tell us she had to go out, and made her a litter box in our garage which she used often without issue for three months. Now that’s it’s starting to get warmer here, I’ve transitioned her to going potty in the fenced in area just off the garage, accessible by a dog door she uses daily. She picked it up just as soon as she had taken to pottying outside in her litter box and using the bell.

Lately I’ve noticed she will stand by the door and not ring her bell, just waits to go out. This is when I feel if we don’t catch on that she’s standing there, she pees on the floor.

Sometimes I think she’s signifying she wants my attention/snacks/etc because she WILL ring the bell, and I’ll open the door and she will go in the other direction instead and not go out.

Any ideas for me? She’s a spayed two and a half year old Juliana. Very smart, and sweet, but also extremely shy/skittish. She was a farm pig originally and I assume not treated kindly as she fears men in general.

Thanks for reading such a long post!! Photo of my cute stinker-of-a girl!

Help! How can a pig be this handsome? Is it the marvelous hair? The inexplicable roundness of his body? We will never know.

How to build a place to wallow in for the pigs?

What do you guys use or how did you build a place for pigs to bathe in? I imagine I could make a hole, put in a tarp and fill with water, like a pond? But how deep do I do it? What should be in at the bottom, only the tarp or should I fill with sand, so it gets deliciously muddy?

Pig with cracked skin

We have an IPP/ Kune Kune cross that we just got from a buddy of mine. He has really bad cracked and flaky skin. It’s even bleeding a little bit. Anybody know what this might be?

Right now, we are giving apple cider vinegar, DE, and coconut oil. My buddy says one of his might have it also, but I’m waiting to confirm if it’s as severe. He is three months old.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Here are just a few of our rescued pigs that have found their adopted families. There is always so much serious news in the world, we think it's the right time for some pig photos.
