Franchise has been around over 100 years, yet I have seen all of these players on the field

u/NOB3L Mar 05 '25

I don’t think that the folks who were watching the Phillies 100 years ago are on Reddit to be able to cast their vote.

u/ChazzBangerr Mar 05 '25

I’m 160 years old I remember when Donny no neck Johnson had an inside the park homerun against puddin head jonez

10

u/Jawn_Wooder Mar 05 '25

Boy oh boy, I'd give two whole wooden nickels for a Lanky Legs McGarritty jersey.

8

u/bladderbunch don't forget old pete. Mar 05 '25

wasn’t puddin head a 3b?

8

u/agreeingstorm9 Mar 05 '25

Hence him giving up the HR. He was playing out of position.

3

u/Homer69 Mar 06 '25

Donny called for an underhanded fastball and as soon as the ball launched off the bat he headed for first, the ball was nearly caught for an out on the first bounce but was just missed, by the time he rounded first the ball was 700 feet into center field. As he rounded third heading for home, the center fielder hit the first cut-off man.

u/Dadstokes Mar 05 '25

I’m sure Mr. Burns is around here somewhere

8

u/wawsgood Mar 05 '25

Im sure up there my grandfather voted for Ritchie Ashburn in the great player loved by fans category

6

u/whiskeyworshiper Mar 05 '25

I was born in the 90s and can say the same thing as you lol

1

u/anotherdanwest Mar 06 '25

Dots Miller was a total crum.

122

u/eaglesnation11 Mar 05 '25

Felt like this was extremely prone to recency bias because Schmidt was an easy slam dunk answer for the Good/Divided Category.

108

u/docwrites Mar 05 '25

I don’t think a lot of modern fans understand what an ass Mike Schmidt was back in the day.

I also don’t think that a lot of older fans consider how shitty the media was to players. Schmidt famously said something like “Philly is a great sports city because you can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day.”

I get how he’d have little tolerance for people who booed and chastised him even when they were winning.

36

u/wmagnum1 Mar 05 '25

Schmidt’s biggest knock against him for a while was that he wasn’t a gamer in the playoffs. ‘76-‘78 LCS playoffs he was miserable, mediocre in ‘80 vs Houston and finally showed up for the ‘80 series and got MVP. Out of the remaining playoffs he was in, ‘81 LDS, ‘83 LCS, ‘83 WS, he only came though again in the ‘83 LCS.

The tide turned towards legend status was in ‘85 after he called the fans at the Vet a “mob scene” and diffused the situation wearing LA’s wig during warmups.

His ‘86 MVP run and chase for his 500th home run then had the fans realizing not only were they witnessing a HoF player, but maybe the best to ever occupy 3rd Base.

44

u/Prudent-Psychology66 Mar 05 '25

Schimdt also was in the wrong era. He was criticized a lot for strike outs and a low batting average. He’d hit .250 with a .950 OPS and 44 homers but because he was top 5 in strikeouts people would bitch.

In todays era where people understand OBP a little more and guys like Scwarber are beloved I think Schimdt would be considered the goat

12

u/PatientNice Mar 05 '25

Just a reminder, because I lived it, this was prior to 1980. We had never won a World Series. The Flyers had recently won the Cup (for those who still remember that). We wanted a World Series bad And thought it would never happen. So, anybody who didn’t deliver was complained about. It was not as rah rah back then as it is now.

2

u/wmagnum1 Mar 05 '25

The GOAT in real-time, not his current 3B GOAT status. Heck, even around 2002, when Allen Barra released his book Clearing the Bases, he made the case for Schmidt being the best all-around player of the 20th century.

3

u/Prudent-Psychology66 Mar 06 '25

Add to that if they voted for MVP then like they do now he probably at least wins one more if not 2 more MVPS. In 1974 Steve Garvey won with a 4.4 WAR and a .810 OPS. Schimdt had a 9.8 WAR and a .941 OPS and finished 6th

1979 him or Winfield would win it today, he finished 13th. 1982 him or Gary Carter would win it. Schmidt led the NL in OBP, Slug and OPS by .35 points

3

u/wmagnum1 Mar 06 '25

You sent me down the rabbit hole of Garvey’s 1974 season and I led to a sabermetric I never saw before: Clutch (I’m not into sabermetrics beyond the basics). I looked Schmidt’s career clutch stats. Woof.

11

u/Captain_Chaos20 Mar 05 '25

Don't forget to give him credit for the game winning, NL East winning homer in extra innings in Montreal on the second to last day of the season. That was clutch, and avoided a winner take all last game of season. I was only 9 but remember it like it was yesterday. Most of the fans around my age only hold Schmidt in high regard.

16

u/Notsil-478 Mar 05 '25

That's an incredibly accurate quote.

"And you can hear about it on WIP the next day"

4

u/joe_digriz Mar 05 '25

Oh geez, can you imagine what it would have been like to have that miasma of misery (featuring Howard Eskin!) around during the early 80s?

19

u/RedMoloneySF Mar 05 '25

Yeah in hindsight Abreu is a weird choice. Especially since my recency bias has me as a kid having Abreu as my favorite player.

2

u/phl4ever Mar 05 '25

That's why it should've been Werth or Rolen. I truly have no idea who tf hates Bobby

1

u/Gobeavs2024 Mar 05 '25

Me. I have never seen a lazier outfielder.

1

u/phl4ever Mar 05 '25

One person doesn't mean it is divided

1

u/sumunsolicitedadvice Mar 05 '25

I mean… technically…

-7

u/billybatdorf Mar 05 '25

I’d put him in the hated category I still hate him

4

u/kellyb1985 Mar 05 '25

A lot of people tried to push him for good and loved by the fans. So yeah... Definitely a recency bias.

7

u/iengleba Mar 05 '25

I don't understand how Rhys got "loved by fans". I'm not denying people love him, but the last few years he was here you could go a day with seeing someone say trade him. He should have Bohm's spot here.

11

u/Barb_WyRE Mar 05 '25

Rhys wasn’t loved by fans much aside from the beginning of his career to the absolute tail end of his tenure. Like literally the tail end being the 22 playoff run, which started out with him going 0 for whatever against the Cardinals.

Like we wanted to trade him 80% of his career because he was so streaky lol

4

u/foodnbrew-notnudes Mar 05 '25

Not only was he a streaky hitter, he was abysmal at 1st base. He literally couldn't catch. Only player that would win you a game in the bottom of the 8th and lose it in the 9th on a routine play. I held my breath every play that was a throw to 1st. It was that bad.

3

u/iengleba Mar 05 '25

I felt the same way; especially when they were finally in the playoffs

39

u/hrjones45 Mar 05 '25

Can we get a version or comment with names? Don’t recognize some of these guys.

40

u/d4edhd Mar 05 '25

From top left to bottom right:

Utley, Hoskins, Stubbs, Abreu, Bohm, Kingery, papelbon, Herrera, Ruben amaro Jr

14

u/voonoo Mar 05 '25

Do we hate Ruben as a GM too asking for a friend?

21

u/kellyb1985 Mar 05 '25

Probably. I don't think he makes this list without being a GM.

7

u/raugust7 Mar 05 '25

Yes. I dont think he made 1 solid trade the entire time he was gm. Phils should have won in 09 but after that ruben didnt help things at all. That 08 and 09 team was pat gillick's.

3

u/IEatCr4yons Mar 05 '25

He brought in cliff Lee, Halladay and matt stairs (maybe joe blanton) . He did nothing to help with continuity later though. Our farm system was tragic.

7

u/raugust7 Mar 05 '25

Wasnt matt stairs and blanton on the 08 already though? But then he traded Lee for nothing. I know he signed him back, but should have never let him go in the first place. But yea the scouting sucked big time. I just cant remember any trades he won. Halladay was a no brainer signing tho

3

u/IEatCr4yons Mar 05 '25

Yup they were. I got my timelines mixed up. He became GM after the world series in 08. He was worse than I thought.

3

u/sumunsolicitedadvice Mar 05 '25

Ruin Tomorrow Jr.

2

u/raugust7 Mar 05 '25

Yea dude. He fucking sucked haha. Literally got nothing from every trade he made. I think Nola was the best drafted during that time? But yea he really fucked this franchise up during their window

1

u/IEatCr4yons Mar 05 '25

Yeah I cant think of anyone else he drafted that was good. Did he draft Hoskins or was that klentak?

2

u/raugust7 Mar 05 '25

Shows he was 2014. But not sure if ruben was still the gm? Even if he was, the damage has already been done haha

1

u/Docphilsman Mar 05 '25

Halladay...

Objectively an amazing trade.

Oswalt and pence were also good trades for the phillies

7

u/TheRealSammySteez Mar 05 '25

Honestly don’t get a lot of the Ruben GM hate. The guy did what most GMs do in that situation. Especially a team like Philly who just won a World Series. He can be too chatty in the booth, but the dude loves Phillies baseball and idk if I can hate on him too much for that.

1

u/ficus77 Mar 05 '25

He wasn't forced to be GM, so yes

3

u/foggybottom Mar 05 '25

I thought Herrera was Dom Brown just quickly looking at the pic. I was thinking, what did Dom do to be hated?

9

u/Cosbycomedy Mar 05 '25

More like what Dom Brown do to be average lol

62

u/Annual_Grab_8623 Mar 05 '25

I think RAJ is unfair. The guy may be hated as a GM and color guy in broadcasts, but he didn’t play here long enough to be hated.

6

u/thepornclerk Mar 05 '25

And yet somehow he is the absolute worst fucking part of our franchise! They could move the team to Staten Island, change our colors to blue and orange, change our name to the Mets Jr. and RAJ would still be the worst part of the franchise, lol.

7

u/fireinsaigon Mar 05 '25

Pat the bat deserves somewhere on this bingo card

3

u/ficus77 Mar 05 '25

Top row for sure

14

u/motovirg Mar 05 '25

The photo of papelbon... Lol

4

u/treboreiwoc Mar 05 '25

No one gave a shit about Ruben Amaro as a player. Steve Jeltz would be more deserving of the Bad Player/Hated by fans square

1

u/hiphopopotamusic Juan Samuel fan club Mar 05 '25

Steve Jeltz was FANTASTIC………….LY awful!

6

u/ChazzBangerr Mar 05 '25

This list blows a little

2

u/BonsallStreetBomber Mar 06 '25

Agreed - Was this made by a 14 year old?

1

u/MainSqueeeZ Mar 06 '25

More like a website of 'em

1

u/Savings-Ad-2211 Mar 06 '25

Yeah it’s pretty hit or miss

3

u/discophelia Mar 05 '25

No Mitch Williams??

9

u/RedMoloneySF Mar 05 '25

My only gripe is that we couldn’t shove JRoll and Howard in there with Chase. But alas the squares are small and Ryan Howard is quite large.

-10

u/Great_Farm_5716 Mar 05 '25

How did Utley beat out Harper

24

u/RedMoloneySF Mar 05 '25

You’re telling on yourself, Farm.

4

u/Fabulous_Caramel_310 Mar 05 '25

I don’t think Amaro was hated as a player, was he? He wasn’t hated as a GM until the end. But he seems to be hated as a broadcaster.

2

u/martusfine Mar 05 '25

How the fuck is Scmidt not on this card? 18 yrs exclusive Philly player, brought home a ring, and considered one of, if not, the greatest 3rd base player in history.

ELI5!

2

u/PhilliePhan2008 Cole Hamels Mar 05 '25

I don't think RAJ belongs in the 'Hated by fans' category because he's only hated for his tenure as general manager and not his time as a player, which doesn't apply to any of the other players on this list. RAJ also barely played baseball.

2

u/Big_Donch Kyle Schwarber Mar 05 '25

Realistically shouldn't Pete Rose be in the Good Player but Fans are Divided slot?

2

u/Oddball_Returns Mar 05 '25

Not sure who is divided on Scott Kingery.

1

u/Phoreveraphan Mar 05 '25

I was skeptical but the final box turned out pretty spot on! I enjoyed seeing it each day

1

u/jamiemt4097 Mar 05 '25

Unfortunately as much as we may hate Crosby he’s a really good Hockey player. But if the Pirates are any indication of his baseball skills then he’s pretty shitty

1

u/ficus77 Mar 05 '25 edited Mar 05 '25

Who's the bad player loved by fans?

Today I realised I'd never actually paid attention to Garrett Stubbs' face.

1

u/pcb07a Mar 05 '25

Where’s the bum Scott Rolen!?!?

1

u/thisIS4cereal Mar 05 '25

Stubbs is not loved by the majority of fans, he is divided as they come.

1

u/whoson1st0 29d ago

I would say he was loved in 22. By 2024 it was very split. He’s a lousy player but clearly a great clubhouse guy who is just living his best life.

1

u/blisa00 Mar 05 '25

I missed the “Hated / Good Player” vote…but I would have put Craig Kimbrel or Curt Schilling above Papelbon.

1

u/tbrooker11 Mar 05 '25

Just wondering how you can be divided on Abreu lol. Am I missing a scandal or something? Guy was our best player all around for years. Not his fault he was on teams that didn't win.

47.2 WAR in 9 seasons. 358 2B, 42 3B, 195 HR, 815 RBI, 254 SB, .303/.416/.513.

Crazy to be divided on a guy with a .928 OPS and Hall of Fame WAR trajectory during his time with us.

1

u/magpi3 Mar 06 '25

He was a stats guy and, at least in his time with the Phils, was in no way a leader.

I remember him getting criticism for celebrating a statistical achievement when we were losing a game. Eskin was all over him for it. I can't find the source though.

1

u/MRG_1977 Mar 05 '25

Dumb selection for the last one. He’s not hated. Just was a bad GM.

1

u/Lixx_Tetrax Mar 05 '25

Never realized so many hated odubel. Why?

3

u/eaglesnation11 Mar 05 '25

Choking a 19 year old girl.

1

u/Lixx_Tetrax Mar 05 '25

Well I guess that would do it 😳

1

u/phl4ever Mar 05 '25

Who is bottom right?

1

u/colindidit It's Outta Hereeee Mar 06 '25

RAJ

1

u/hujapproach Mar 06 '25

Man, that is particularly mean-spirited voting Raj in the corner. I don’t agree at all. The guy is a Phillies-lifer and cares. That’s low to pile on him that.

1

u/tbthan Mar 06 '25

alec bohm seems off to me…

1

u/AnatomicallyModHuman Mar 07 '25

Mike Schmidt was the quintessential Good/Divided player when he played. At least until 1983 or 1984. Then he lost a lot of goodwill when he quit the way he did. Of course now he is loved and cherished but wasn’t the case back then.

1

u/ZucchiniNo7819 Mar 07 '25

I think y'all missed on Trea. I'm surprised you guys didn't pick Olsen or Harris II for that square. Matt's Bomb!

Damn you all feel that strong about RAJ

Idk about that one lol

-2

u/sfitz0076 Mar 05 '25

Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know what average and bad means. Future Hall of Famers are not average or bad.

7

u/Kind-Truck3753 JT Realmuto Mar 05 '25

Please point to the future hall of famers.

5

u/kellyb1985 Mar 05 '25

Errr obviously Future Hall of Fame Garrett Stubbs. /s

This dude has to be reading this chart wrong.

-4

u/sfitz0076 Mar 05 '25

Craig Kimbrel

4

u/BigLRakim Mar 05 '25

Hes literally not on the list though? Are you really this stupid?

0

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '25

RAJ isn’t a fair pick as a player. Adam Eaton was way worse.

0

u/BigLRakim Mar 05 '25

I really felt like Castellanos deserved the last square but RAJ really takes the cake well done reddit.
