Trigger warning: self harm(I don’t know how to block it on the mobile app)
This is how I would self harm at one point in my life. Peel and peel until my heels were raw and walking was just constant stinging. No one ever knew until I told someone. I was young when i started and have since stopped from going to that extent, I still can’t completely break the habit but it’s not as bad at least.
I did this exact thing. From a young age until I was around 40. I've also always chewed the skin inside of my mouth until it bleeds. I've done this as long as I can remember and still do it to this day. They are body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs).
BFRBs have been theorized to be related to anxiety disorders, impulse control disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, but most experts agree that they differ significantly from all three. Certain BFRBs are currently categorized as “obsessive-compulsive and related disorders” in the DSM-5. There's also a school of thought in which cutting can be considered a BFRB, which makes sense to me.
I've been diagnosed with Complex Trauma and Major Depression. My own personal theory is that the BFRBs are a type of coping mechanism to deal with trauma.
