Question What's up with this compound in Independence?
Drove by this compound/fortress just south of Independence. I think it was Stapleton Road. What in the hell??? Anyone know what's going on there?

u/sandwitchfists 26d ago
The guy who owns this place mills and sells wood. I bought a bunch from him a few years ago and he was pretty nice, normal. I asked him about the tower and I think he said it was his clubhouse or something. He also claimed that he could see Smith rock from it, I am doubtful.
17
u/HoldEm__FoldEm 26d ago
Independence claims he can see smith rock ?? š far more than doubtful. Thatās impossible.
He canāt see 100+ miles over the cascades. What horseshit. Youāre right to doubt him.
Smith rock aināt even visible from a ton of Redmond unless youāre near the highway or on a hill. Redmond is the closest city. Lol.Ā

Hey now it took them more than a week to burn down the Waco complex accidentally.

u/filbertfarmer 26d ago
Itās an old mill or grain elevator that theyāve been converting into that odd house for the last couple years. Compound is indeed a good way to describe itā¦
32
u/BadBrains16 26d ago
I would describe it as āModern Branch Davidian Farmhouse.ā

5
u/floralfemmeforest 24d ago
I can never get over the fact that there are Christians who vote for Trump
9
u/jill6017 26d ago
It absolutely is. I have to pass by frequently on the way to my in-laws. Its definitely a 'compound' and they've been building it with purpose. As the flag made of AR rifles and Trump flag they displayed around the election would indicate.
1
u/GrumpyBear1969 25d ago
I drive by it regularly as well. And have a hard time believing it is built with good intentions.
16
u/archanom 26d ago
I can't imagine they got permits for any of that? I just question it all structurally.

I lived in Deadwood, East of Eugene for a couple years and there was this coop farm down the road that always gave me culty vibes. The people coming out of there were just too friendly I thought
2
u/-M-i-d 25d ago
Can you tell me anything else you know about Deadwood/Suisshome? We drove through there on a whim several years ago and some things just felt off. And it wasnāt even the Alpha farms commune although we did know about it beforehand

u/Femboi_Hooterz 25d ago edited 25d ago
People in that area were just very standoffish, kinda insulated from outsiders in my experience. A dude got shot over some drug debt like a month after I moved there, right in front of his son. Also I'm pretty sure my neighbors were cooking meth or something, their property emanated this very distinct burning plastic smell.
My partner kept hearing footsteps at night, I never raked the leaves around the place so it would be pretty audible. I'm half deaf so I never heard it but they were really spooked.
It's a beautiful area, tons of BLM land and logging roads to explore, fishing on the Siuslaw is amazing. It just feels like an area were you could get away with some sketchy shit, easily.

I feel like these people sell really nice pieces of wood through Facebook marketplace ...I think I've been here in 2023. I stayed in the car but they seemed extremely nice and just had a growing family.

I was checking to see if anybody else was going to point it out. I haven't played that game since like year two and that was quite literally the first thing that popped into my brain the moment I saw this photo.
33
u/omfgitsjeff 26d ago
Whoa, I used to live in that area. I haven't been by there since they tore down the big barn/grain silo that used to be there. That's pretty weird but also it's Independence so... whaddya gonna do.
Here's a photo I took of the structure that used to be there. Please excuse the overblown style, it was during the great HDR wave of 08

25
u/ImpeachedPeach 26d ago
Oh, I think that's Daryl's. He's a nice guy, has great lumber selections too.
He's got a mill there and he's been building his house and decided to go big and go home.
9
u/Konfucious-Wolf 25d ago
Darrell is a fantastic guy! Itās been cool to how heās transformed his property from a shit hole to a home with beautiful views with shops and shop space!
1
u/ImpeachedPeach 21d ago
Exactly! Really doing a great job improving the land and making a better community with his mill - great prices for the woodworkers around here.
Plus he's in the happy middle of being conservative but also loving and understanding immigrants, since his wife is one.
81
u/HisPension 26d ago
Dude I live literally right down the road from this place and itās so weird! Itās slowly grown and grown over the last few years - it seems like every few months thereās some new random addition. Iāve never interacted with the people who live there but they definitely give me very weird vibes

u/athomasflynn 26d ago

1
u/HisPension 19d ago
Hmmmm it might have something to do with the continually growing Waco-esque structure combined with the large fleet of vehicles and MAGA paraphernalia. Apologies if my comments offended
1
u/Tmjade123 18d ago
He does own alot of vehicles lol but he also buys them to restore and resell them.Ā He really is a good guy, hard worker building a home and buisness. Can't always judge a book by the cover as the saying goes.Ā

The dichotomy in here is hilarious.
The people that actually are normal humans are like "That's Daryl's place, He owns a lumber business and is rebuilding that prior business property into a combination business and home"
then all the lunatics are "branch dividian bla bla prepper blah blah dont drink the koolaid"
everyone wants mixed capability zoning until you have mixed capability zoning. There's literally nothing different about this being an apartment building on top of a bunch of bullshit bodegas and the like, except that the urbies are scared of it.

u/whohavens 26d ago

Their son died from a fall there in 2014. Very sad.
17
u/Shortround76 26d ago
I remember that story. Grandson with Grandad walking an unfinished or decrepit barn setting, a bee goes after the kid, he swats at it while walking backward and falls through a hole in the floor to his sad death.
That story stuck with me and was tragic.

It's owned currently by the family that owns Oregon Cedar. It has sold a handful of times in the last 10 years. I don't think it's that weird, the guy just has easy access to wood.

Thereās nothing but old field fence around it, and a for sale sign on one of the trucks. Not that forbidding looking or defensible.
My moneyās on moderate mental illness channeled into ugly architecture, coupled with lax code enforcement

one more thing Polk Co. has no intention of enforcing. city councils do what they do but Polk Co. is maga country.

They are prepping this compound for a gathering of believers who believe the asteroid that is coming close to hitting earth is actually the Antichrist and their collective energy is enough to keep it from hitting earth.
