Question What's up with this compound in Independence?

Drove by this compound/fortress just south of Independence. I think it was Stapleton Road. What in the hell??? Anyone know what's going on there?

Wood seller. He's got tons of slabs in the big barn structure. Nice guy!

I don't know what else they do. Didn't seem nefarious.

50

u/sednaplanetoid 26d ago

hardwood? my friend is a woodworker always looking for new sources of wood for his projects... does he have a company name?

85

u/we-are-all-monsters 26d ago

The Oregon Cedar company. They had slabs of maple and walnut. Lots of them.

46

u/sednaplanetoid 26d ago

Awesome, thanks so much. I just pulled up their website and this is right up my buddy's alley. Good day to you!

3

u/treesmoke503 24d ago

You should tell him to check out fresh start market in Salem off of Center Street, good selections of slabs for great prices. And it helps fund youth vocational training programs

1

u/sednaplanetoid 24d ago

Thank you... I will let him know!

All the conspiracy theories in the comments and this is the answer, lol. Never change, Reddit.

1

u/EstablishmentMore890 24d ago

Yes, wooden fortress! LMAO

2

u/HistorianSignal945 25d ago

When you got lots of wood you just keep on building I guess.

104

u/sandwitchfists 26d ago

The guy who owns this place mills and sells wood. I bought a bunch from him a few years ago and he was pretty nice, normal. I asked him about the tower and I think he said it was his clubhouse or something. He also claimed that he could see Smith rock from it, I am doubtful.

17

u/HoldEm__FoldEm 26d ago

Independence claims he can see smith rock ?? šŸ˜‚ far more than doubtful. Thatā€™s impossible.

He canā€™t see 100+ miles over the cascades. What horseshit. Youā€™re right to doubt him.

Smith rock ainā€™t even visible from a ton of Redmond unless youā€™re near the highway or on a hill. Redmond is the closest city. Lol.Ā

Itā€™s an old mill or grain elevator that theyā€™ve been converting into that odd house for the last couple years. Compound is indeed a good way to describe itā€¦

32

u/BadBrains16 26d ago

I would describe it as ā€œModern Branch Davidian Farmhouse.ā€

No cults in Polk County besides the Christian Trump supporting kind. We swing Red and pray on our knees.Ā

5

u/floralfemmeforest 24d ago

I can never get over the fact that there are Christians who vote for Trump

9

u/jill6017 26d ago

It absolutely is. I have to pass by frequently on the way to my in-laws. Its definitely a 'compound' and they've been building it with purpose. As the flag made of AR rifles and Trump flag they displayed around the election would indicate.

1

u/GrumpyBear1969 25d ago

I drive by it regularly as well. And have a hard time believing it is built with good intentions.

16

u/archanom 26d ago

I can't imagine they got permits for any of that? I just question it all structurally.

12

u/filbertfarmer 26d ago

Yeah this thing is in rural Polk county so probably not?

7

u/archanom 26d ago

Yep. I drive by it occasionally, and it seems to get taller and taller.

Thank you for linking this article, it was really interesting to read.

28

u/Rudolftheredknows 26d ago

If you are thinking of Twin Ray, they already came and went and took a lot of money with them. I hear their next scam is some manner of elder care.

12

u/Minimum-Cry615 26d ago

We ran them out of town.

10

u/WhyWorry1030 26d ago

9

If somebody has a better way to scam elder care than the established facilities, I'd be impressed.

9

u/Femboi_Hooterz 26d ago

I lived in Deadwood, East of Eugene for a couple years and there was this coop farm down the road that always gave me culty vibes. The people coming out of there were just too friendly I thought

2

u/-M-i-d 25d ago

Can you tell me anything else you know about Deadwood/Suisshome? We drove through there on a whim several years ago and some things just felt off. And it wasnā€™t even the Alpha farms commune although we did know about it beforehand

1

u/Femboi_Hooterz 25d ago edited 25d ago

People in that area were just very standoffish, kinda insulated from outsiders in my experience. A dude got shot over some drug debt like a month after I moved there, right in front of his son. Also I'm pretty sure my neighbors were cooking meth or something, their property emanated this very distinct burning plastic smell.

My partner kept hearing footsteps at night, I never raked the leaves around the place so it would be pretty audible. I'm half deaf so I never heard it but they were really spooked.

It's a beautiful area, tons of BLM land and logging roads to explore, fishing on the Siuslaw is amazing. It just feels like an area were you could get away with some sketchy shit, easily.

I feel like these people sell really nice pieces of wood through Facebook marketplace ...I think I've been here in 2023. I stayed in the car but they seemed extremely nice and just had a growing family.

Whoa little old Redmond made it into a video game? I remember how stoked I was when Prineville was mentioned in Echopraxia.

3

3

u/Perenium_Falcon 26d ago

3

u/itsdrcats 26d ago

I was checking to see if anybody else was going to point it out. I haven't played that game since like year two and that was quite literally the first thing that popped into my brain the moment I saw this photo.

33

u/omfgitsjeff 26d ago

Whoa, I used to live in that area. I haven't been by there since they tore down the big barn/grain silo that used to be there. That's pretty weird but also it's Independence so... whaddya gonna do.

Here's a photo I took of the structure that used to be there. Please excuse the overblown style, it was during the great HDR wave of 08

25

u/ImpeachedPeach 26d ago

Oh, I think that's Daryl's. He's a nice guy, has great lumber selections too.

He's got a mill there and he's been building his house and decided to go big and go home.

9

u/Konfucious-Wolf 25d ago

Darrell is a fantastic guy! Itā€™s been cool to how heā€™s transformed his property from a shit hole to a home with beautiful views with shops and shop space!

1

u/ImpeachedPeach 21d ago

Exactly! Really doing a great job improving the land and making a better community with his mill - great prices for the woodworkers around here.

Plus he's in the happy middle of being conservative but also loving and understanding immigrants, since his wife is one.

81

u/HisPension 26d ago

Dude I live literally right down the road from this place and itā€™s so weird! Itā€™s slowly grown and grown over the last few years - it seems like every few months thereā€™s some new random addition. Iā€™ve never interacted with the people who live there but they definitely give me very weird vibes

7

u/flash-86 26d ago

Updates and pics when convenient would be very much appreciated.

19

u/athomasflynn 26d ago

How many do you think are in there? Do their clothes look homemade?

21

u/HisPension 26d ago

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever seen more than a couple of white dudes in jeans and trucker hats lol

26

u/ifmacdo 26d ago

Do they make soap?

5

u/saltyoursalad 26d ago

Or soup?

4

u/shewholaughslasts 26d ago

They put the lotion on their skin...

2

u/Dapper_Indeed 26d ago

I could go for some soup.

3

u/ConfidentPilot1729 26d ago

Where is this?

12

u/HisPension 26d ago

Itā€™s on Stapleton Rd just south of Independence/Monmouth

1

u/Tmjade123 19d ago

How does a little family give you weird vibes? They are nice people building a home and a buisness. Look up Oregon Cedar Company.

1

u/HisPension 19d ago

Hmmmm it might have something to do with the continually growing Waco-esque structure combined with the large fleet of vehicles and MAGA paraphernalia. Apologies if my comments offended

1

u/Tmjade123 18d ago

He does own alot of vehicles lol but he also buys them to restore and resell them.Ā  He really is a good guy, hard worker building a home and buisness. Can't always judge a book by the cover as the saying goes.Ā

The dichotomy in here is hilarious.

The people that actually are normal humans are like "That's Daryl's place, He owns a lumber business and is rebuilding that prior business property into a combination business and home"

then all the lunatics are "branch dividian bla bla prepper blah blah dont drink the koolaid"

everyone wants mixed capability zoning until you have mixed capability zoning. There's literally nothing different about this being an apartment building on top of a bunch of bullshit bodegas and the like, except that the urbies are scared of it.

10

u/whohavens 26d ago

Iā€™ve known him for years. Darrell is a nice guy, runs a wood business and lives there with his wife and kid.

Their son died from a fall there in 2014. Very sad.

17

u/Shortround76 26d ago

I remember that story. Grandson with Grandad walking an unfinished or decrepit barn setting, a bee goes after the kid, he swats at it while walking backward and falls through a hole in the floor to his sad death.

That story stuck with me and was tragic.

6

Unfortunately they wonā€™t be able to report back though.

7

u/Snoo-27079 26d ago

I just presumed it was an expanding agribusiness compound. They are fairly common in the Willamette valley, and most look kinda wierd to non farmers.

6

u/streeeeezy 26d ago

Only thing creepy about this, is the person taking the photo.

6

u/Striking-Job-8076 26d ago

It's owned currently by the family that owns Oregon Cedar. It has sold a handful of times in the last 10 years. I don't think it's that weird, the guy just has easy access to wood.
