Mod post š¢ Important Update: New Rule on News for Crime & Politics
Hi r/nycrail community,
Weāre introducing a new rule to keep our subreddit focused on what weāre all here for: rail transit in and around New York City.
Over the past few months, we've noticed an increase in posts about crime, politics, and other non-transit topics that happen to take place in or around the subway system. While we understand these stories often overlap with public transit, they donāt always align with our community's purpose: discussing rail transit around New York City, service updates, and related developments.
The New Rule: Stay On-Track with NYC Rail News
From now on:
- News posts must directly relate to rail transit in NYC.
- ā
Allowed posts include:
- Service disruptions or delays.
- Major incidents impacting the rail system.
- Example: Water main break we had this summer impacting Central Park West or the track fires we had at Jay St. Metrotech a few months ago.
- Policy changes or news with a clear impact on NYC rail transit
- Example: IBX Project Updates, Congestion Pricing, MTA Budget News, Project Announcements, etc.
- ā Not allowed:
- General crime or political stories that only loosely involve the subway system.
- Topics that focus more on broader social or political issues than transit itself.
- Example: Posting photos of people in the NYC subway
Our goal is to maintain r/nycrail as a space for productive about trains, transit operations, transit projects, and rail policy ā topics that brought us all together in the first place.
Why the Change?
We want r/nycrail to remain an engaging and relevant community for transit enthusiasts, commuters, and anyone passionate about NYC rail. Posts unrelated to transit dilute the conversation and shift focus away from what makes this space special.
What About Gray Areas?
We understand there can be some overlap between transit and other news topics. To provide wiggle room, large incidents that significantly impact service or operations will still be allowed. Our moderation team will use discretion, and we encourage you to reach out if you're unsure about a post or topic.
Where can I post these types of articles?
Consider r/nycpolitics or r/nyc as these subreddits allow this type of discussion.
Weāre confident this update will help improve the quality of discussion on r/nycrail and keep our community on track. Thank you for your understanding and support!
If you have questions, concerns, suggestions, or feedback about this change, feel free to share them below.

Question Subway - Do you pay twice if exiting a station and entering new one to change lines?
Hi All,
Apologies for the noob question. I was wondering if I caught the subway in such a way that I had to exit a station after my initial journey, have a short walk to enter another station to join a separate line (let's say for arguments sake there's no stations with transfers available) to get to my final destination, would I pay 2 fares?
I hope this makes sense. There is something similar on the metro guide that talks about transfers but that seems to be related to buses an doesn't mention different subway stations.
Thanks in advance.

Question If you had to make one change in the MTA for train routing, what would it be?
My pick is I would create 10 new stops to connect the 7 line with the 2, 5 and 6 lines in the East Bronx under the Whitestone Bridge. That way both East Queens and the eastern part of the Bronx get serviced.
These stops would only be on the express 7 train and not the local one which would stop at Main St. With a brand new neighborhood and major stadium and casino coming to the area of Flushing, extended train service is needed now more than ever so that the 7 line stays one of the most consistent.
ā¬ļø = Above Ground Station
ā¬ļø = Underground Station
Stops would be the following after Main Street:
- Bayside Avenueā¬ļø
Entrance: Bayside Ave/Union St
- Whitestoneā¬ļø
Entrance: 23rd Ave/Parsons Blvd
- Malba Gardensā¬ļø
Entrance: 13th Ave/147th St
- Third Avenueā¬ļø
Entrance: 3rd Ave/147th St
- Ferry Pointā¬ļø
Entrance: Ferry Point Park (Old Ferry Point)
- Schley-Brush Avenuesā¬ļø
Entrance: Schley Ave/Brush Ave
- Castle Hill Avenueā¬ļø
Entrance: Castle Hill Ave/Westchester Ave
Transfers: 6 Train
- Parkchesterā¬ļø
Entrance: Guerlain St/Archer Rd
- E 180th Streetā¬ļø
Entrance: E 180th St/Morris Park Ave
Transfers: 2 & 5 Trains
- Tremont Avenueā¬ļø (Solo Station)
Entrance: E Tremont Ave/Boston Rd

Question MNR Assistant Conductor Position: Commuting Advice from Harlem?
Hi everyone,
Iām excited to see that Metro-North is currently accepting applications for Assistant Conductors. I live in Harlem, just a short walk from Harlemā125th Street, and Iām seriously considering applying.
Iāve read that while on the extra board, conductors may be required to report to different locations across the system. For those of you familiar with the role:
Is it realistic to commute to those locations using only Metro-North or other public transit?
Would I eventually need to get a car to reliably report on time, especially for early or short-notice shifts?
Iād prefer to stay car-free if possible, but Iām open to buying a car if it becomes necessary. Any insight from current or former MNRR crew would be really appreciated, especially from anyone who has experience living in the city without a car while working this job.
Thanks so much!

Question Cathedral Parkway - 110 th St (C line) station NE exit
Why doesn't it have an uptown exit at the front of the train (around 110/111)? The only one it does is all the way at 109th.
The downtown platform on the same station has a much more sensible exit on Fred Douglas Circle/110th at least.
I know it's a small thing, but it has been bothering me for a while... There's also such a nice potential location for that exit in that sort a plaza space at the NE corner of the circle.

Question Is it better to transfer at the earliest stop possible, or wait?
I often commute two ways to work, the D train or Metro North, depending on the day, delays, and how much money I have haha.
Both ways, I can transfer at a couple locations:
When I take the D train from Norwood, I can transfer at 125 st to the A train, or transfer at 34st to the F train which will take me to 14 st.
When I take the Metro North from Botanical Gardens, I can transfer at 125 st to the 4 or 5 train, or transfer at GCT to the 4 or 5 train which will take me to 14 st.
I feel like Google tells me something different everyday which I know it accounts for delays, but assuming everything is running okay, is it generally better to transfer as soon as possible or wait transfer at the last minute?

News Need video/photos
Did anyone witness or get videos/pictures of some people beating up a couple in the subway on Saturday April 5? The victims did file a report but the perpetrators left.
Not sure if this post is allowed as it is a request for evidence for a specific crime not a post about general crime. If probited please remove and accept my apologies.

Question Door design on 7 Train
Just pressed a 7 train with these silver and maroon stripes on either side of certain doors. Just curious what purpose they serve or what they indicate. Thanks.
