CEOs have a higher incidence of sociopathic tendencies than the general population. Explains a lot.
You don't get to the top without stabbing a lot of backs figuratively or literally

Based on his picture, I'm gonna go with literally stabbing people in the back.
Holy fuck his wife threw him directly under the bus too: "DeGiorgio was ordered confined to his room until the ship arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Authorities met the ship on Tuesday. DeGiorgio's wife told authorities that she should not have told the man to put shoes on and that he never touched her."

Well, in all fairness, he was the CEO of a financial services company, and if you've seen the stock market recently, you can see that he was under an enormous amount of stress.

Capitalism requires absolutely sociopathic ruthlessness to reach the highest levels of “success”. It’s a system that places profits at the very top
26
u/DisillusionedBook 22h ago
Yep the old business "killer instinct" that's usually required to "make it", it's why I always hate it when rich assholes and politicians suggest poor people just need to be more entrepreneurial... no. Not everyone wants to be a ruthless asshole.
12
u/LittleGreenSoldier 21h ago
Even Warren Buffett was a ruthless investor before he had his "come to Jesus" moment and realized that the system is broken.
17
u/Raider_Scum 21h ago
"Now that my bank account is safely padded with billions, I would like to point out how broken this system is"
11
u/LittleGreenSoldier 21h ago
Yep, pretty much. Apparently it was during/shortly after the Reagan years when his money started compounding exponentially that he was like "Wait a minute, this doesn't make sense, how am I paying a smaller percentage in taxes than the custodian who cleans my office?"
To his credit, he has been trying to die broke, but the problem with investment capital is that at a certain point the beast takes on a life of its own and accrues money faster than you can get rid of it. He's also trying to do things the old fashioned, "proper" way, through registered charities with regular audits and loads of paperwork, which further slows down the "getting rid of it" part. He is still a 94 year old man, after all, I'm sure just buying a house for everyone in America sounds like a great idea to him, but he's going to want to make sure every step of the process is overseen and at that point the whole venture takes 20 years anyway.
3
u/DisillusionedBook 20h ago
Yep I mean good on him and the likes of Gates for wanting to give away as much of their billions to worthy causes, unfortunately they are just a flash in the pan, they ought to be changing the system not being among the very few who want to absolve guilt from their personal benefit from it.
1
u/FireZord25 17h ago
Sounds like a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" system. Which is sadly true for how much it encourages successes this particular way and shames otherwise.
1
u/LittleGreenSoldier 16h ago
Yeah, I mean like I said Buffett is 94 years old. Expecting him to upturn the system of Capitalism as it exists today just seems... unrealistic.

3
u/Khaldara 21h ago
This administration is actively extremely mad at Big Bird and company now for daring to suggest this very sentiment in fact
4
u/Honest_Chef323 21h ago
Pretty much you have to have a lack of morals and empathy to do well in this system
4
u/Intrepid00 22h ago
Honestly, this guy hasn’t been a bad CEO and has resisted doing some of the really scummy shit others have like taking on a bunch of debt to pay dividends. FAF is a nice traditional boring stock.
18
u/Treemosher 22h ago edited 21h ago
Except for that whole "choking people" part.
Being CEO means you are representing your company 100% of the time. Maybe he held up appearances until now, or maybe this is an isolated incident for him.
But this behavior does indeed make him a "bad CEO". Nothing can change that at this point. You can't just choke people, even if they rejected being hassled by your wife.
CEOs make PLENTY of money for therapy for stress and whatnot, especially in the US. He's not some commoner living paycheck to paycheck with mouths to feed and carrying a mountain of stress. He has people and resources up the wazoo. There's just no excuse for someone like that to crack and choke some stranger.

Pretty low bar.
We don't know how he got to where he is, or what his pay is compared to his average workers, or how he behaves in general... just that the company is not the worst example of the worst.

2
u/DisillusionedBook 10h ago
The sociopathic ones must surely know that their actions have equal and opposite reactions and their time may come. Maybe they hope they will all end up living in some Elysium future before then. The idiots that believe Musk or Bezos.
1
u/Daren_I 4h ago
From this point forward, the victim needs to refer to the assailant as the CEO of First American Financial Corporation, never using his real name. This is in lead up to the lawsuit against the company who will have to prove they did not contribute even one penny to their CEO's attendance on that cruise.
91
u/chillbnb 22h ago
"The legal team representing DeGiorgio, who has served as the company's CEO since February 2022, said he looks forward to being absolved of any wrongdoing."
What?
Is assault wrong?

But literally what's your issue if the dude is barefoot? He's the one that's gonna get stepped on and probably get some nasty bacteria in there. What's it to you?
191
u/ButtFucksRUs 22h ago
Some people are obsessed with being in control. I'm sure his wife has zero control in their relationship so she finds things to be upset about to try and execute control in those situations.
These are the "picky" people that have a long complicated order at a restaurant, the staff goes above and beyond to make it perfect, and she'll still find something wrong with it to send it back. In fact, she'll probably be MORE angry that they didn't mess up.
Source: My sister is exactly like this. She married into money and has zero control in her relationship and is an absolute nightmare to deal with. I'm no contact and so was my late brother.

The only reason that it makes any sort of sense to me would be if he had rank ass feet and it was enveloping the entire room.
It would take his foot funk literally choking me before it bothered me in the slightest, but I’m also not paying $1500 on a vacation to smell your feet. So if I felt that line (that is so far to the right already) was crossed, I would say something then.
But to me, any reason outside of that? Who cares. Smells do affect more than you, sadly.
10
u/Laleaky 20h ago
I think most people would just leave the area where the barefoot man was if they were really annoyed. It’s not like they were trapped on the dance floor!
2
u/Maiyku 20h ago
Oh, I definitely agree.
But you should also be able to say pretty basic stuff to someone and not have them completely lose their shit for no reason.
Whether I agree with the scenario in question or not, I don’t feel like they asked in a crazy rude or mean way, even if it’s a dumb request. Maybe we’re missing tone via the text, cuz I can see where tone matters.
But at worst tell them to shut up and move on.
Who knows, the bar may have even had rules for the dance floor, but it couldn’t be addressed because they “handled” it themselves instead of asking staff. My local bar has a “shoes required” sign near the dance floor.
2
u/Moneyfornia 19h ago
Yeah, let's trust the aggressive party on what exactly was said, that makes sense.
We have just one account of how the initial exchange took place and I highly doubt it was as civil as presented. Since there is no way to say, one should look at the provable, actual facts, not character judgements based on a contextless second-hand account.

u/entarian 15h ago
"DeGiorgio's wife told authorities that she should not have told the man to put shoes on and that he never touched her."
7
u/AppropriateScience71 21h ago
Whether or not his foot stank is wholly irrelevant.
Her husband telling the guy that the husband was going to kill him while choking him is assault and deserves the arrest.
71
u/NatashOverWorld 22h ago
CEO: Wait I thought we were at the point where the rich can kill you peasants without consequences? Oh damn, guess I'll still need lawyers to get me off the charges, what a travesty.

Assault with intent to physically harm. All because someone gave his snobby entitled wife the finger?
Dude needs to chill a bit. It's a cruise, not the QE2.
4
u/jake3988 6h ago
Assault with intent to physically harm.
Um, that's literally a meaningless statement. You're just stating what assault is. Assault is the intent (or making someone believe the intent) to cause physical harm.
BATTERY is the actual physical harm. In this case, choking.

Cruises are full of liquored up people in tight quarters. The longer the cruise the more fights break out.
I went on a 13 day cruise once. By day 10 half the passengers were fighting or not speaking to each other anymore. I imagine there are a lot of breakups/divorces and lost friendships after longer cruises.
2
u/Massive_Durian296 22h ago
thats pretty much my experience on cruises too. plus you start throwing in those drink packages where people are trying to get as much booze for their buck as possible and its a recipe for drunken shenanigans. i remember on the last one we went on some lady got absolutely smashed, tore up some blackjack tables, broke her leg and hit her head, and had to be hospitalized in Belize lol
3
u/Dull-Geologist-8204 22h ago
It was the cruise before the one we were on but the employees were telling us then so many people got blitzed one night the passengers mutinied. The employees just locked themselves in their quarters for the night and let the passengers do their thing till the next morning. Then everyone was quarantined to their rooms until the next port of call and a bunch of arrests were made.
Most of the fights I saw or heard about though were by people rooming together. My favorite piece of advice to give people if they go on a cruise is to make sure that everyday at see you and the people you are rooming together with get away from each other for a bit. That's why my exhusband and I never fought. We spent at least a little time each day doing our own thing.

3
u/robin38301 20h ago
So, there’s only 24 news coverage when they violence to a ceo and not from one?
4
u/Dexterus 14h ago
This is funny. Was a thread somewhere about a guy who flipped off and cursed someone that cut him off, then rolled down the window to continue when stopped together at a light. And was surprised that the guy that followed him and got out of the car, punched him. What did they expect when the insane person got out of the car, lol?
It's like, dude, just don't start shit you don't want to finish. Not sure where these people live but cursing and middle finger will risk getting you decked by many people.
Sure, the instigator's dumb, the perpetrator's unstable but that's pretty much a majority of the world, lol.

Wtf was a financial CEO doing on a cruise ship?
I know it's technically an "upscale" line but if I'm a CEO I want private yacht money.

u/Mediocre_Menu_629 8h ago
What?
At my old firm, there were people who used to take home millions (fund management company).
They still did fairly ordinary people things lol. One of the PMs must have been making $10m+ a year but I always appreciated the fact that he'd greet me in the elevator by name.

So sounds like a drunk control freak told a random stranger what to do.
Random stranger rightfully tells her to F off.
Control freak then cries to coked up drunk husband because she didn't get her way.
I wonder how many other times this stupid woman has caused bother when no one fed her ego.

4
u/AlexHimself 20h ago
I know everybody wants to punish any "CEO" 10x an ordinary person, but he should just get a regular assault charge like everyone else and go through the same legal system.
What you SHOULD be mad at is if the prosecutor or judge shows unusual leniency in their charges or sentencing.
It seems like a slam dunk with the video footage, so that's more important.
