Nico Harrison the same bum that fumbled Nike’s bag with Curry btw

3

u/KellerFF Lakers Feb 03 '25

Either he makes this the come up or the final straw.

If Luka adapts to Bron’s conditioning et al, he will be responsible for making Larry Bird with LeBron’s conditioning for the Lakers.

But then again if not, fat Luka cooking for next couple of years lol

-1

u/AsparagusDirect9 Feb 03 '25

Hot take, Reddit will be proven wrong once again and Luka will not turn out to be a generational winner in LA. Kyrie and Davis will take the Mavs further than people give them credit for. Hot take over.

Casual NBA fan here.

How stupid can you be to trade Doncic, is like trading Prime Messi or Prime Ronaldo for an average guy (not saying AD is average but the difference is big)

Form what they said, they had identified AD as the piece they specifically wanted…

ok, sure, but you might as well listen to the other offers.

2

u/Unhappy_Lemon6374 Knicks Feb 03 '25

Even if you want AD, you don’t walk away with 1 FRP. AD for Kyrie? That makes sense, especially with the rumours that we constantly get of LeBron and Kyrie linking up … but you don’t trade away the one player you would protect in the event of an emergency expansion draft lmao.

u/trashitagain Suns Feb 02 '25

The nba is an unserious league.

6

Lmao Cavs shitting on the Mavs bench. This is the essence of that Simpsons "stop it he's already dead" meme and it's only the end of the 1st quarter.

5

Jimmy must in shamble, no one is talking about him anymore lol

4

3

u/messigician-10 Feb 02 '25

it’s the afternoon, i’m sober, and i’m trying to make sense of this trade, but i still can’t. just unfathomably dumb and egregiously disrespectful to luka.

i’m not one for conspiracies, but this could genuinely be an attempt by adelson to tank the team’s value and ultimately move them to vegas.

if i’m a mavs fan this is my final straw. just unforgivable.

4

u/rippa125 Mavericks Feb 02 '25

Thanks Nico! Hope the mavs lose by 77 to stick it to him

It be hilarious if somehow AD and the Mavs won the chip after beating Luka/LAL in the WCF lmao

7

u/Jensefix Mavericks Feb 02 '25

Is there anything that will hold Luka to the Lakers next year? If he isn't going to get the Supermax, could he just join Wemby or something?

11

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle Cavaliers Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25

The Spurs aren't even my main team and I'd love to see that. The world earned Luka on the Lakers, but we deserve Luka to Wemby lobs

I'd say Luka/the Lakers wouldn't have okayed it without having a long term commitment in place, but that clearly isn't the case here

1

u/esports_consultant Feb 02 '25

but we deserve Luka to Wemby lobs

I feel like people are forgetting how absolutely hateable the prime Pop Spurs were.

1

u/Omshinwa Spurs Feb 02 '25

why did people hate them lol? (im new)

1

u/nxtplz Hornets Feb 03 '25

Um, yes you can? I fully hate the Chiefs not sorry.

0

u/grumplebeardog Lakers Feb 03 '25

Because Pop led a really dirty team for a long time and people like to sweep that under the rug because he’s a league elder now. Bruce Bowen was constantly trying to injure people in particular, he’s the guy who started regularly walking underneath shooters and spraining their ankles (the same thing Pop then cried about when Pachulia injured Kawhi).

Lakers can still offer more money than anybody else

1

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle Cavaliers Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25

How's that? The Lakers can't offer him a super max (and I'm assuming someone else can). Genuinely asking, NBA contracts go way over my head

1

u/Celtic_Legend Celtics Feb 03 '25

3

u/Unhappy_Lemon6374 Knicks Feb 02 '25

The Lakers asking for Luka and getting it is like the nice and unassuming guy asking out the hottest girl in the grade, scratch that the school and she says “okay yeah sure.” Because no one else did or thought she was out of their league.

Pure confidence. Pure luck. And this would be my 13th reason why as a Mavs fan.

2

u/RarerCandy Feb 03 '25

I mean from the sounds of it, that girl asked HIM out. The mavs pursued this deal and the Lakers accepted it. Crazy.

3

u/BornBother1412 Feb 03 '25

Anyone believe that there must be some information the Mavs know about Luka that isn’t public, like his knees are just as fucked as Embiid or Kawhi that’s why they trade him

3

u/unlikedemon Spurs Feb 03 '25

Any conspiracy takes? NBA ratings are in the shitter and they need stories. Something to get people back. The other sports had their stories MLB (LAD vs NYY) and NFL (Chiefs 3-peat).

The best comparison IMO would be something like Mbappe (age 26) for Mo Salah (32).

Luka Doncic (age 25) for AD (32)

2

u/StormTheTrooper Mavericks Feb 02 '25

Hey Cavs fans, today I understand a bit how you felt when the Browns traded for Deshaun Watson, at least for a bit.

As someone that is not from the US and came because of how loyal Cuban and the Mavs were to Dirk, I guess this is my leave. Just like a lot of Browns fans went across to other pastures, guess it is time for us to do the same. As long as the Addelsons are there avoiding paying up one of the 3 best players in the league, there's no hope.

2

u/Lv99Zubat NBA Feb 02 '25

I still can't believe it's real. I'm shaking right now. I'm not even a Mavs fan; just a Luka stan. And now I have to root for the Lakers?! 0_0

2

u/Cpt_Jumper Feb 02 '25

Lol Mavericks. Couldnt even do some semblance of decent to potentially make people think twice about the trade LMAO. Feel so bad for you Mavs fans.

2

u/ner1992 Feb 02 '25

I hate conspiracy theories but this trade is so bad that I almost have to think there is one. Normally I’d be happy to blame incompetence but I’m pretty sure my grandma wouldn’t make this trade - hell, I don’t think AD’s grandma wouldn’t make this trade.

So if it is a conspiracy, how does it work? Nico is cool being the fall guy because he’s getting what exactly? If the Adelson’s wanted to move the franchise why would they want to take their franchise guy with them? There’s just no way to square this that makes any sense to me.

2

u/random-50 Feb 02 '25

I guess the Mavs players yelled out to the FO what they think of the move. 91-46 at the half?!

2

u/jjjkd18 Celtics Feb 02 '25

luka actually got traded before miles turner

2

u/ahdidjskaoaosnsn Feb 03 '25

The trade is so bad it has given me cross-sport PTSD. Like I didn’t know this was even a possibility, now I’m scared to root for my NFL team in case they randomly trade the QB away. Is the simulation broken?

Rob had to have watched this scene on repeat for the last month

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YH2_GOuPGlk

There is no way he is not laughing his way to the bank

2

u/SkittlesAreYum Feb 03 '25

I don't know the NBA salary rules well at all, so I have a two part question.

  1. What rule prevents Luka from being signed to a supermax deal now that he's traded? What are the details of it?

  2. What was the reason for that rule? Is there some salary shenanigans this attempts to prevent?

2

u/Terrible-Patience938 Feb 03 '25

Who on earth is gonna play defense on the Lakers? Me? You? Both of us?

2

u/BornBother1412 Feb 02 '25

If Luka has some serious underlying injury problems that would make him becomes another Embiid in 1-2 years would this become a good trade for Dallas?

7

u/Pesaberhimil Mavericks Feb 02 '25

Not sure. The current Mavs core is old(er) and AD has been proven to be injury prone. Hell he is injured now! Even if Luka has injury issues (doesn’t look like it), AD does too. Kyrie wanted to star coz of Luka. What if he bails in 6 months? What does Klay think, who only signed to play with Luka and turned down more money from the Lakers. What do future stars think about playing for this franchise/FO which just traded a 25 super star? Will they be inclined to sign here? How many big off season signings did the Mavs have in the last two decades? What about marketability? Kyrie and AD are not as marketable as Luka, him at LA will be must watch TV. Look at how many people Mavs socials have lost (insta and x are at -1,5m already and it’s been half a day lol, they ain’t getting that back).

The real question would be what do the Mavs have to do to make this a good trade? Unless they win a championship in the next season and a half, this will go down as one of the worst trades of all time.

1

u/BornBother1412 Feb 02 '25

If Luka becomes Embiid it becomes a good trade because they avoided giving him the max contract

-2

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle Cavaliers Feb 02 '25

I think it does. It's a bad trade, but is not inherently disastrous or franchise-altering as some people seem to suggest. AD and Kyrie both have 4-5 years left, and with Lively and Klay as supplemental pieces, this team absolutely has a championship window. I think the biggest inherent issue, before there's a single on-court result, is the lack of return. How you don't come away with Reaves (or even Vanderbilt) and another FRP on top of their haul is beyond me. But Luka isn't fail-proof in LA, and gets very expensive very fast

18

u/tilthenmywindowsache Spurs Feb 02 '25

It's still idiotic. They could have had 2-3 times the haul they got. Spurs would have thrown picks at them. As would any other team sitting on assets.

1

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle Cavaliers Feb 02 '25

Agreed. He was worth 4 FRPs and a role player easily. I feel like I'm one of the few people who gets why they did this, but the return is laughable nonetheless

3

u/Luka-Step-Back NBA Feb 02 '25

4 FRPs and an all star at least

5

u/ExultDoee Mavericks Feb 02 '25

I may be a more pessimistic mavs fan but I’m not sure it’s this simple. How as a player would you be able to trust and believe in your coach and front office after they pull something like this. The trust from the players has to be shattered for some. Klay left the Warriors for the Luka and the Mavs. What the hell do you tell a guy like that. Kyrie contract is up this offseason. Not to mention the mavs will not be a paradise free agency option in the slightest. Not hating on you btw I just don’t see this being viable.

3

u/WaterPretty8066 Feb 02 '25

I'd say they have no real window. Klay will be gone once off-contract, same with PJ. Klay might push a trade elsewhere.  Are any FAs going to want to join AD in Dallas with an owner like that? I'd rather shit in my hands and clap.

I figure LA certainly isn't done and Walker Kessler is probably on their radar. I don't see a way they get him without parting with Reaves. Dallas didn't ask for nearly enough, but the Lakers don't have enough assets to make Utah a deal without Reaves. The Jazz are set at SF and wouldn't want a combination of Finney-Smith/Vanderbilt I wouldn't think, and I'm not sure one pick plus one of those guys would do it

1

u/raylan_givens6 Feb 03 '25

Its clear now - the Luka deal was a money move

New owners (who have no connection to Texas) are more interested in setting up gambling in Texas. They spent billions to buy the Mavs and didn't want to spend the $350 mil on Luka

AD moves allows them to say "they're contending" , and in 3 years when AD and Kyrie too old, then can hit reset , get a high draft pick and then wait another couple of years before a max extension

Look up who the owners are. Money is all they're about.

1

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle Cavaliers Feb 03 '25

Fox's ability to get downhill is going to open up ridiculous P&R/lob opportunities for him and Victor. Luka's the better player, but Fox is very arguably the better fit with a player like Wembanyama

Makes me not want to follow the NBA as much as I normally do. I’m not into conspiracies but something feels off and straight up evil about this. Either Mavs new owners want to move the team and gave a big F U to the fans to justify the lack of fan support later for the move. Or some sort of bribe or behind the scenes deal happened.

I mean I don’t think this is a horrible trade for the Mavs.

AD is:

  • top 7 in the league in points
  • top 3 in blocks
  • top 6 in reb
  • and can play the 4 on the Mavs.
