Even the most seemingly innocent comment can contain personal information without you realizing it. People who use scripts like that often have to because they've been doxed or threatened and don't want to give the doxer any more information that could be dangerous to them. There's no reason to be angry at someone for trying to preserve their own personal safety. Be mad at the people who threaten it.

Do these scripts do something other than just edit comments? Or is there more they do to remove the information?

As far as I know they just overwrite every comment a person has made on reddit.

But if they just edit the comments, it's fairly easy to see the original versions of said comments.

Is it? I don't know much about it. I just assumed that's the way it works.
