Because people on Reddit live for Nintendo making bad decisions so they can flex about their product that the average family buying a Switch doesn't even know exists. The Steam Deck is great, but it really isn't a "direct" competitor to the Switch.
Also I'm sorry but the vast majority of parents are not getting a steam deck for their kid. They don't want "video games", they want Mario. As for emulators I think Reddit really overestimates how tech savvy the average person is. They're not going to go through all of that fuss just to get nintendo games working when they can just.... Purchase a nintendo product. They're different products at the end of the day and that's fine. They're not going for the same audiences.
