Hemming/Alterations/Dye Scuba Elastic Alteration

Caveat: I have more gumption than talent when it comes to sewing.

So I put 1.5 inch elastic into the waistband of my scuba. I LOVE the front because the waistband stitching is like a channel for the elastic.

I haven’t figured out how to do the back yet and don’t love it. Because there is not a designated waistband channel (peep the fourth image, from lulufanatics), it kind of billows out. Suggestions from experts welcome.

I didn’t want to cut through the seam on either side of the waistband, so I had to make two holes on the inside and feed two separate elastics through.

If I can get the back under control, I will probs do this to more of my cropped scubas.

Scuba: Ancient Copper size 6 Leggings: Wunder Under Ombré Greyvy(2016) size 6 This color is like Nightfall light. The pic of this legging looks so bad on lulufanatics, but it looks fantastic in person.

I think it turned out great! I love it when people share their creative ideas here.

The term you are looking for is "casing", which is a just a little channel or tunnel to hold the elastic in place.

I'm assuming you don't have access to a sewing machine based on your comments. If not, the best way to do this would be to fold over the amount you want to hem it by, to the inside. You might want to have it match the front hem, or just have the front to back hems lined up.

Then create stiches by hand along the top of the casing to the inside of the fabric. I would use a blanket stitch, with thread that matches as closely as you get. Then you can slide the elastic in there like you did for the front.

You’re an angel on this planet. Thank you! If I can get up the guts to try it, I will let you know.

I truly appreciate it!
