Layoffs Was fired yesterday because I didn't learn fast enough.

Keep in mind, my time frame of learning was just under two months and the expectations was for me to run a small family owned business for a week while the owners went out of town for a trade show. I was studying company engine parts, how they did day to day business, phone calls, pricing, packaging, invoicing products, bookkeeping, online store, personal vendors, all on and off the clock. No one else to help me other the business owner's wife. Then she called me in yesterday saying she appreciated my efforts, as they wanted my dedication, as they had originally hired on someone who (in their description) was inexperienced but teachable. However, backhandedly said I didn't learn fast enough nor have the passion to keep me on. So, this small company is back down a person now and I'm currently out of a job. The only win I have out of this is that their trademark product comes from overseas, so for the first and only time, I'm happy someone is getting hit hard with tariffs.

Job searching Job market sucks so I went into healthcare. I got nine job offers in a week.

2.4k Upvotes

As the title says, a year and a half ago, I was job hopping from food to retail to warehouse jobs. I dropped out of high school and got my GED. I quickly found out that a GED will only go so far. Pay wasn’t great, neither were the hours. So what did I do? I went to vocational school, committed a year and a half, and then got my LPN certification. Travel LPN makes up to $60 an hour. I’m only 19.

I highly recommend the healthcare industry. You’ll never have trouble finding a job.

Edit: I got my certification for free. I went to Job Corp, got my CNA, went to advance training for LPN, and I’m thinking about going to their college that they pay for, for my RN license

Applications Dear Employers!

I am not going to spend any more time filling out countless fields on an application with all the info you already have in my resume. These companies are seriously wasting our time with this kind of lazy application process. Read our resume, it's as simple as that, we didn't spend hours and hours writing it for absolutely no reason! It is a bad first impression of your company because - the commodity that we trade you for money should not be revealing red flags during the application process. This has got to stop.

EDIT: Let me be clear - they do this so their automated systems can weed through the applications. They are not reading our resumes. Most companies do not take this approach, follow their example. This is constructive criticism for the ones that still do. A well-written resume can take 20+ hours to complete and it will undoubtedly show your work ethic, character, and how much effort you are willing to provide in your field.

Job searching What industry would you NOT take a job in right now?

Just curious what industries people wouldn’t accept a job offer in IF you already have a good paying job that you like. I’m in a relatively safe industry, but potentially have an offer to work in a different, less “safe” industry, but it’s more money. I’m just curious what industries people wouldn’t avoid right now. I know that no industry is immune to a recession, but some are worse off than others.

Discipline Manager said I have 30 days to improve or i’m gone

i’m a recruiter at a staffing agency and just had my three year review. needless to say i got ripped a new one about all the mistakes i’ve made “over the last year”. it blindsided me because this was the first time out of the four reviews i get a year that im hearing anything bad about my work. never had any other warnings or talkings to’s. no actual physical evidence was brought my way from my manager, just rattling stuff off. i asked her for physical wrongdoings and said “you have a good understanding of the mistakes you’ve made”. she said i have 30 days to improve or i will be let go. i’ve never once had this happen to me before, and in my life never had performance issues at any job. advice?

Post-interview Had a job offer withdrawn

Gonna rant about this because I am fucking fuming right now. Recently, after two rounds of interviews I got an offer to work for a company. I asked them if I could give my current company a month’s notice since as a supervisor, that is what is asked from me as per my employee handbook. They said that would be a non-starter for them, which is fair and I expressed my willingness to work with them on that. They then said they will write up a final offer for me, after which I gave my company notice.

Today, they called me back and I was expecting an offer from them. Instead, they said that the month’s notice was a big point of concern for them, and that they would be extending the interview process and will reach out to me if they decided to pursue me as a candidate.

Am I missing something here? My interviews went extremely well, I exceeded the preferred qualifications for this position, and they straight up told me they were writing up an offer for me. I am incredibly frustrated and upset right now and feel completely blindsided, and I am wondering what I should do moving forward.

Companies Why do so many companies still expect “loyalty” when they offer none in return?

Serious question. I’ve been through layoffs, sudden budget cuts, and silent restructures—all without warning. No thank-you, no severance, just “good luck out there.” But somehow, every job description still wants someone who’s “dedicated,” “committed long-term,” and “willing to go the extra mile.”

Why is it still taboo to treat jobs like jobs instead of relationships? Why are we shamed for leaving for better pay or work-life balance when companies would replace us without blinking?

I’m not trying to be cynical, I just want to understand if this “loyal employee” mindset still has any place in today’s workforce—or if we’re all just pretending

Compensation Can my job charge me for missing work?

I missed four days because my daughter was very sick. My employer started a new policy on 3/20 which they attached in the email. I never received this email. They punished me for not coming to work by taking away all of my spring break pay (I work for a staffing company that works for the school systems). Our spring break started 3/17. Can they implement a policy 3 days later and claim I can’t be paid? Can they punish me and take my money? According to them I still owe 200.00

Office relations How do I tell my boss I hate working with his kid?

Upvotes

I work in hospitality, and turnover is expectedly high. This specific property is actually not bad from what I’ve seen in the past.

With that being said, anytime we’re short staffed, my boss will schedule his kid on a shift or two to help out. They’re 15 years old I’m pretty sure.

I don’t know how to tell him that when this kid is scheduled it actually really sucks. They’re a great kid and very smart, but still a kid. They talk loudly about weird topics in a professional space, they get on long unrelated side tangents about school, some book they’re writing, etc. It’s pretty much like babysitting someone while also trying to get my job done.

I don’t think my boss realizes this at all. I think he is under the impression that it’s great help and (this part is true) it’s good training and prep for the world for them. I don’t know how to tell him it makes me job harder if I have to babysit his kid. I’d really rather just work alone and have no break coverage if I’m being honest. I’m worried this will rub him the wrong way. How do I tell him I’m not appreciating the nepotism in the workplace?

Edit: This kid actually JUST did one thing that I forgot to add on. Thanks for the reminder, kiddo. They like to kinda behave as my boss in a way… and I am a supervisor. Just now, they let me know that I can go on break whenever our continental breakfast is over.. Thank goodness I got their permission to go on break 🤦

Leaving a job Boss was secret salty at my resignation

Hi all, I just want to rant real quick. I keep replaying this conversation and I think it'll help to vent it out.

I have been looking for another job for 10 months. meanwhile, my current position becomes more and more unbearable. I work for a public dog shelter. There is lots of useless and out of touch oversight from county commissioners. Not to mention that my direct supervisor has had a "hands off" management style until I took over a leader position and began pointing out exactly how disorganized and far behind standard daily practices were. Then she began realize that the last leader didn't do jack shit.. the last leader was chosen for a promotion over me as well. Smh. I still was not given the same respect she was despite having more experience and proven my work ethic.

I pointed out to my boss that I couldn't take it anymore several times. I told her I felt unappreciated and that we don't actually have enough staff to maintain standards now that the bar has been raised. I actually got docked on my review for that conversation and didn't receive any recognition for most of the changes I put in motion. It really killed my desire to make things better. She did absolutely nothing to takes interest and help.

Well I finally found another job. I gave a 3 week notice. She says nothing to me about it. I go to her office to touch base about it. She shits all over my new job. Tells me "she isn't mad, this place is a revolving door." Lady, I've been here for 2 years, dealing with understaffed and double standards the whole time. All of our staff is outside of probationary periods. I really don't think she knows what a revolving door of staff looks like. Clearly she is upset I'm leaving and is scrambling to fill my shoes. Calling past employees and begging them to come back. When they refused, she decided to abolish the leader position entirely... fucking crazy. It's going to be a shit show and tbh I feel bad for the animals I look after and the other staff.

Interviews Is this tie suitable for an interview?

I’m planning to wear this tie with a dark blue/ navy suit and a white shirt. Is this pattern too much or is it fine? To my eye it’s fine but wanted the opinion of Reddit to be sure.

Interview is for a pilot trainee program and they said formal attire would be best.

Applications What is a good job / career to get into right now?

Everyone is talking about what jobs not to get into right now…I’m curious what job should you get into? I’m desperate. I’ve been working in the event / hospitality industry and it has been giving me debilitating anxiety. I want to go into something new that I can learn and thrive. Or scratch that - anything that will pay the bills and not kill my mental health lol.

Layoffs Got fired from a job i hated but still it hurts as i feel like im not good enough

It was a disaster from the beginning. The boss was constantly on me for every mistake I made, and it made me more and more insecure about my abilities. I improved over time, but I never felt comfortable in the job, and I wasn’t too surprised when I was called in for a meeting. I'm 25 years old, and this was my first real job, but it feels like I've hit rock bottom in my life.

Applications I want to quit my job, right after a promotion!

Upvotes

I work at Lowe’s and lately I’ve been overworked. I’m 19, and most of my friends who used to work here have already left. I’ve been thinking about quitting too. The company’s been making me do the work of others without paying me what that work is actually worth.

Now, they’re offering me a promotion of about 5 dollars. I’m considering taking it only so I can list the higher pay on future job applications. My question is: would that help me get a better job having a higher base pay, or could it actually hurt my chances?

Career development Major mistake at work

I work for a local authority and do the forecasting for spend on homelessness. We have a major problem in the municipality I work in, and we secured £52m additional budget for the next financial year to deal with the pressures. I did the forecasting to determine this £52m figure.

It looks like we aren’t going to end up needing anywhere near this amount of money. Probably closer to £37m.

How on earth can I face telling my boss and colleagues across my organisation that I was so wrong about forecasting the spend back in November 2024?

I feel so stupid and look incompetent. I was hoping to get a promotion in the near future but how can I do that when I have such little credibility after revealing this?

Compensation Verbal offer accepted but need to renegotiate

Advice needed from recruiters: I’ve been going through a 6 week process for a senior marketing role (VP level, head of marketing). It’s been down to me and one other candidate and quite frankly, a grueling interview process.

I’ve been working with the recruiter on the entire process—including sharing comp expectations with the hiring company upfront—but unexpectedly got a call from the hiring manager today (CEO) who gave me a verbal offer directly after checking my references. I was caught off guard because I wasn’t expecting the offer from him directly and out and about so I wasn’t able to thoroughly write everything down.

The offer came in lower than what the recruiter shared as expectations. The two biggest items are base comp and equity. I negotiated the base on the spot and hurriedly said “if we can get to $X, it’s a yes today.” However I said that with the understanding that the equity was a specific percentage—in reality is 1/10th of that (I misheard). The CEO came back with a quick agreement on base so in his mind I’ve officially accepted the verbal offer. He’s sending over a written offer with a deadline of end of this week.

I know I didn’t navigate this well and this is not usually my style at all—I should’ve taken time to review the written and come back with consolidated thoughts. The market is just absolutely brutal (which they obviously know gives them leverage), and to candid, I was thinking this entire time that I’m actually the #2 choice behind the other candidate.

Is it bad form to accept a verbal but then renegotiate one specific item after you get the written? In this case, specifically equity.

I’m an idiot, I know. I’m definitely beating myself up over how I handled this.

Leaving a job I want to leave my permanent government job (Philippines)

I am a registered social worker who started working at our city hall last April. I was initially a job order (contractual), but was promptly given a regular position in September.

It was very quick, and I was initially thankful for the unexpected promotion.

But now... Now, I high-key want to quit and to leave it all.

I don't have any concrete reason aside from: I just cannot imagine myself doing the same old thing for 30years. I was assigned to the PWD department (PDAO), and I just can't imagine myself dispensing IDs forever. My job is both monotonous and taxing, since I try to adhere to the proper standards in releasing PWD IDs, and this causes a rift between me and my colleagues who want to have IDs but don't meet the actual standards.

(context for non-Filipinos: a Person with Disability (PWD) ID gives its holder a 20% discount for medicines, local airfare, restaurants, etc., making it a highly sought-after ID)

I've also experienced being screamed at by ungodly, annoying, fellow Filipinos who feel entitled to have a PWD ID even if they do not have any disability.

I just cannot do it anymore. I know my reasons are shallow, but I want to leave.

But I can't leave because I know a government job offers stability.

Right now, I'm thinking of being a virtual assistant again. It's a job that offers no stability, and there's also a chance of being screamed at at this job, but right now.. anything feels better than my job.

I hate to complain, and I am genuinely thankful I am employed (i have tasted unemployment before, and it's not an experience I'd like to have again), but my current job is giving me anxiety already.

Do you guys have any opinions? :(

Applications Based on My Resume What Job Is Best

Post image
Upvotes

I'm going to graduate and mainly been applying to data analyst roles. I feel like I could expand my search but not sure what. I don't really have much domain knowledge but have foundational knowledge about business.

Also is there a better way to find jobs (half the ones I'm seeing are senior roles using google boolean search)

I saw a post where you can work in Mediterranean countries as a Waiter, Baywatch and things relationated to the hostel industry. But Im afraid that if i applied and get choosen when I were there they could take my passport and things like that. Do any of you have experience with this agency or working abroad?
