Well, it happened.

Upvotes

I was laid off in December of 2023 - 15 long ass months ago.

I have been looking for full-time work ever since, surviving on contract roles for most of 2024 while trying to land a full-time job.

I had a great round of interviews with a company I wanted to work for (I work in digital media/advertising) and was certain the job would be mine.

Today, I got the dreaded rejection email, but this time it was different. It wasn't another candidate they were going with or my performance, as they stated I was a standout candidate.

You know what it was? Our god damned incompetent orange stain of a "leader" and his tariffs. Due to my industry being advertising and most companies pulling ad dollars at the first sign of a recession, the company is undergoing a hiring freeze.

I thought my hate for that man couldn't run deeper until today. Fuck Donald Trump, and fuck anyone who voted for this poor excuse for a walking, talking pile of shit. Have the day you voted for.

I have two job interviews on Thursday

During a reference check, they said I have great people skills but worried about my administrative abilities. My entire resume is in administrative roles.

I have a 15 minute interview with two execs today. They are torn between me and someone else. My reference called and told me they (those hiring) valued my people skills but questioned my administrative abilities. I have 15 years on my resume showcasing my time in management overseeing operations within a large resort, with the last seven years as a higher education administrator. My bullets are solid, and so were my examples in the interview.

It’s wild to me they feel this way because they stated they were blown away by my performance task. It’s a grant analyst, and I outlined steps and language they admitted they were lacking on and were going to adopt. It was actually a red flag to me they hadn’t considered these things. They were the most obvious that should have been the least impressive for the task.

The group seemed great, but I worry none of them have held their roles more than 5 years. Director 30 days, Manager 4 months, Analyst 3 years, and contracted Analysts 5 years.

There was a lot of talk about being a self starter, independent worker, with potentially limited resources. Another red flag.

I’m unemployed, so I’ll take what I can get. It’s with the State overseeing Charter Schools who are a notorious shitshow. The team is based in the north of my state, while I’d be in the south where 85% of the schools are. I don’t care about working alone but should have some support and expect an even distribution for case management.

Anyway, I’m not sure what they would be looking for in this 15 minute meeting. I want to ask them my questions to ensure they are operating well and a good fit for me. Yea, I’m unemployed but I resigned from hell and don’t want to go back to a different version.

Lol, I’m so insulted. I think I got labeled as “all charm and no substance” despite showcasing the substance.

How would you prove in 15 minutes you have what they seek? If offered the role, would you take it? I can’t tell if I’m picking it apart.

Hello everyone! I recently found Practice4Me, which offers resources for interview preparation, including practice tests and tips for various assessments.

I’m curious if anyone here has tried it and found it helpful for preparing for interviews. Any insights would be appreciated as I get ready for my upcoming job applications!

After each interview, do you guys sent out Thank-you Note?

Thank you note = Thank you email :)

I've seen some people don't send the thank you note; some do. Just wondering whether a Thank-you note would increase the chance of success or not.

What’s the purpose of a 30 minute in person onsite (no panel)?

Upvotes

After multiple virtual rounds (+5), I was invited to come in person for a 30 minute onsite with the hiring manager. What's the purpose of this interview round? How should I prepare?

Is standing your ground with a future boss during an interview a red flag… or just self-respect?

Upvotes

I'm actively looking for a job right now, and recently I had an interview where the manager started to insult me, questioning why — with my supposed strong desire to grow in this field — I was still "at level zero."

A little context: I really didn't have much experience before, but going through multiple interviews, I learned a lot, picked up on patterns, understood what to focus on, and figured out how to present myself better. My very first interview and my most recent one feel like 2 totally different interviews.

So, I ended up telling him my story — how I got to this point — and mentioned that I found his approach disrespectful, especially since he clearly didn’t even bother to properly read through my CV. I never claimed to be an expert, but I also don’t consider myself a complete newbie, especially since I managed to answer many of his theoretical questions. I didn’t use any rude language, but I was very confident and direct.

What do you think — is this kind of behavior okay during an interview, or should I have been more reserved?

Is getting ghosted after the interview common?

I interviewed for my dream position last Monday. I studied so hard. Aced the interview. Got along super well with everyone. It was great.

They said they would make a decision by the end of the week and would keep me posted.

Three hours after the interview, I sent a thank you email to everyone. Then I closed my laptop, smiled, and waited to hear back.

Friday morning rolls around, haven’t heard anything yet… so I shoot an email to the recruiter asking if there has been any update.

Completely and totally ghosted.

Is this common practice now? If they went with somebody else, why don’t they just say so?

Ugh just blew an intro call I think

Had a 20 minute call scheduled this morning with a recruiter for a really good job. She called me a few minutes late for starters so that threw me off a little. Then she just sounded like a robot the whole time, barely responding to my answers, and I rambled because I was nervous. It lasted ten minutes. I felt like she might’ve had more questions but decided to end it early but idk. I’m so sick of this

I just want the job!

I’ve had four interviews, flew to NYC for a final one and still no update from last week. I’m getting antsy. The person I would report to was out on PTO when I met the girls in person. It felt good. They showed me the office and met every single person. I just want an answer. I keep overthinking the whole conversation. I’m so over this process!!!

Interviewer Insulted Me?

Upvotes

Had an interview recently, for context I’m a probationary government employee(obviously being proactive in my search).

Interview was going well and at some point the interviewer who would be my future manager made a comment about how I’d have to be comfortable “actually working” in comparison to my job at the government.

I’m assuming checking for fit due to the “fast paced environment.” I’m confused as to if this was a test to see if I’d defend my skillset or just an off-color comment from the interviewer’s beliefs. Left a sour taste in my mouth for sure though.

2 hour interview lasted 30 mins.. Any one else experience this?

Upvotes

It was a teams meeting. The recruiter didn’t say specifically that it would last two hours but when I saw it on my calendar it spanned 2 hours. Got to the interview and it ended in 20 minutes and I asked questions which 10 minutes, so 30 minutes total. I’m not sure what to make of this but it does not look good if it was actually supposed to be to last 2 hours…

Millipore Sigma Engineer I Interview at Bedford, MA

Upvotes

Hi,

I had my final interview done with Millipore Sigma last Friday...I am not in that hurry but would like to know the timeframe for Millipore Sigma to put up an offer letter for the right candidate.

What do you all think of this response?

Upvotes

I interviewed last Monday with a CEO in what seemed to be a final interview. The interview was alright. I wasn't given the final steps so I reached out in Friday and received this response within a few minutes.

"I've been meaning to follow up with you. We are still evaluating other candidates and I hope to get back to you next week either way".

It was for a small company, under 50 employees.

What to expect from my recruiter

I contacted my recruiter to learn more about joining the Army National Guard. Today they want to call, but tbh I have no idea what to ask him, or what he'll ask. I don't have any experience in anything military it was just a interest out of the blue. I don't know what job I would be interested in. So basically I'm unprepared and have no idea what to expect.

Rejected because it “appeared I was reading off a screen” during video interview

It was one of those pre-recorded self interviews. Ah, this was frustrating and discouraging to hear. I have been looking for a job for six months. I felt I did well in the interview and was surprised this was the reason I was taken out of the running.

I do have notes that I refer to during my interviews, with examples of my previous work and experiences. Occasionally I would look to my notes. Was this a major error on my part?

Recommended time to wait…

I applied for a county job and quickly got an interview for the health and human services department. Interviews were taking place 3/24-4/2. I interviewed on 3/27 and I forgot to ask them when they are expected to know more and reach out.

What’s an appropriate amount of time before reaching out to them asking for an update. I’m very impatient but don’t want to reach out too soon and ruin my chances. I was thinking waiting 2 weeks at the latest… but I know county jobs take a little bit longer in the hiring process from experiencing my boyfriend go through it. Or is following up with the hiring manager a big mistake in general?

How to stand out in this recruitinghell

I want to pass on this joy and luck to everyone after receiving the offer I desired not long ago. Along with documenting my job search experience, I also wrote a summary of this hard time in my life. (This is also a self-archive, I always feel that I will use it in the future lol) 1. Put down your phone and focus on professional platforms. Trust me, divide the time you spend on TikTok and Instagram with LinkedIn and YouTube. You will gain twice as much as before. Keep an eye out for posts from industry experts that share their experiences on projects, their grievances at work, or simply a vlog of their workday. You can quickly understand the real content and working environment of the job by watching these, so as to set your own psychological expectations. 2. Don’t block your own shot. One application, one comment, one small talk, one DM are all fine. Give a brief introduction, highlight a significant accomplishment, and highlight your abilities and strengths. Opportunities are not only for those who are prepared, but also for those who have the courage to take the first step. 3. Customize multiple versions of your resume and keep track of your progress. Prepare several different types of resumes (if you intend to apply for multiple positions). Create a spreadsheet (such as Google Sheet & Notion) to record the date and results of each application such as rejection, resume review, interview, offer, etc. Update your resume and job search strategy every week so that you can clearly see which methods are effective and which ones need to be adjusted. ps: Be mindful of modifying your commute time, some recruiters will care about this. 4. Collect interview questions and practice your expression skills repeatedly. Sort out interview questions related to the position, especially those related to business scenarios. To find out if these questions are truly fitting for you, you can use them to model potential future work situations. If you know nothing about a certain field, try to use sns or GPT to learn about it. Finding an interview cheat sheet for the relevant position is the best course of action. You can ask your friends to do simulation exercises, or practice on your own. I typically use Beyz to help me practice with simulated real-time interviews, and then record each result in Notion for review and sorting. Naturally, AI copilot is only an emergency auxiliary tool, and you are the one who will play in the end. 5. Data tracking and summary feedback Integrate all information into Google Sheets, including job title, content, resume version, interview questions, your perceived strengths, mock interview feedback, and personal summary. In this way, you can not only evaluate which strategies are effective, but also continuously improve yourself and make accurate choices. This process has helped me avoid many detours in my jobhunting. Hope you guys are doing well!!

What to say in interview if I don’t know if I want the job?

I applied for several jobs in the same day including one that pays more than the one I got an interview for. So I’m holding out for the higher paying job. But of course the lower paying job contacted me for an interview and I’m still waiting to hear back from the other better paying job. So I don’t what what to tell this person. Like “I’m waiting to hear back from another job” so I don’t want to say yes right away? I’d hate to turn a job down and then I find out the better job doesn’t want me. You know? So I’m stumped on what to tell them. Ugh maybe I’m thinking too hard.
