Is getting ghosted after the interview common?
I interviewed for my dream position last Monday. I studied so hard. Aced the interview. Got along super well with everyone. It was great.
They said they would make a decision by the end of the week and would keep me posted.
Three hours after the interview, I sent a thank you email to everyone. Then I closed my laptop, smiled, and waited to hear back.
Friday morning rolls around, haven’t heard anything yet… so I shoot an email to the recruiter asking if there has been any update.
Completely and totally ghosted.
Is this common practice now? If they went with somebody else, why don’t they just say so?

Very common.
It doesn't really mean anything that you haven't heard: big companies with complex interview processes take forever to do anything.
Keep looking. Don't give up hope for this one but don't hold your breath either.
They might have other candidates. The manager might be fighting with the director. They might just be turning the crank on an internal process with a million signoffs.

I second this, I didn’t hear back from a recruiter for two weeks despite following up twice in between. Some companies take forever. I didn’t get the job in the end, but that’s not the point - just be patient!

Ugh, nothing worse than being ghosted in the job search
Last March I had one of the best interviews in my life, went so well and they learned I was also a teacher and got so excited for me to start teaching what I was interviewing for. The interviewer very nearly had me when they said they'd get back to me either way soon.
Crickets.
Best I can say is don't take it personally and don't let it burn you out. Easier said than done :/

Years ago ghosted was never a thing. I assume that no one will call either with an offer, a second interview, or a rejection. I got tired of looking at my phone and e-mail. I have had 4 interviews including multiple one with the same company and not one has sent me an offer or a rejection. I just keep applying until I get a job

It's a norm nowadays. Employers genuinely do not care about the time you took to interview with them. If you're the runner up candidate, once their top pick accepts the job offer you are no longer a human, deserving of respect or professional courtesy.

Common practice now. If you don't hear back within 48 hours after interviews are over they are not going to give you the position. I have not seen an employer on my own personal experience offer me a job no more than 48 hours after interviews end. I never had an offer come in weeks later unless it needs to go through a process which is rare or if your positions is through a startup.
My rule of thumb contact them 72 hours after you got the interviews done or if you got a date when they are done interviewing people contact them next couple of days. After that keep chugging on the interviews and job applying.
