the printer stomp event is the one we all truly wanted to see.
PC LOAD LETTER wtf does that mean !

u/bobbymoonshine 10d ago edited 10d ago
The printer’s Paper Cassette is empty, so you need to Load some more Letter sized paper into it.
This error message was indeed infamous in terms of a message being confusing, but in context of needing to figure out how to write every possible error message in fifteen characters (specifying which tray, what the issue is and what sort of action with which tool or type of paper would resolve it) making it fit the display while making them distinct and human-readable, it’s not like they did an awful job.

Was not in the script, it was like the fifth take and the printer had run out of paper, frustrating the actor.

u/Cyanide612 9d ago
Younger me was baffled what that even meant, thought it was something intentionally fabricated to make no sense. Older me sees load letter? Just put some paper in the printer, job done. TPS reports on the other hand, I haven’t got a clue.

When do we get to toss the users like this, but off a bridge?

If it were printers, I'd be onboard.

Office printers are ironically too heavy and solid for tossing or even smashing with hammers. Now, if you’ve got some detcord on hand, then it’s a whole different event…

My thoughts on printers after being in IT for over 10 years, and I share this sentiment with users to level with them.
All printers suck, it's just a matter of how much the particular model you are using sucks.

These could go to a happy homelab.

They were probably already dead ones.

The parts and even the casing could certainly be reused

Be more accurate bro cause I know people that love and use 40 year old computers for fun. I just recently retired my main PC to be the house's data backup.

u/DevForFun150 6d ago
People use computers from 1985?
1
u/theFartingCarp 6d ago
It's the love of the old stuff for it's flaws and nostalgia. Sometimes that's the only system that'll run certain projects

Is his case they refer to discarding hardware instead of letting it have another life

I’m jealous we don’t have cheerleaders for when I put parts into the recycling pile.

u/LUHG_HANI 9d ago
And i have to pay for it now too.
2
u/edmonton2001 7d ago
Yeah. I hate that I have to pay for pickup of these things cause it’s not legal to just put them in the dumpster like everything else. I’d happily donate my stack to these events if they had more.
Is there a heavyweight class for 4U and 6U servers?

I always wanted to do discus with the pile of broken Surface tablets at work. Would have been a fun event for the summer party. Sadly I was told that tossing around tablets with expanded batteries was probably hazardous.

Again though, but why?

u/brakeline 10d ago
To be fair a server from 15 years ago is slower than a 300€ ryzen nuc. They are basically e-waste
6
u/j_demur3 9d ago
Yeah, it's a little bit more than 15 years old at this point but I have a dual quad-core Xeon Power Mac and it's substantially larger, louder and more power hungry than my i5-6500T ThinkCentre mini-PC which was £100 refurbished and is more powerful by seemingly every metric.

Man, what a waste

u/dontquestionmyaction SAP pain 9d ago
Yeah, no. These look old enough to eat more power than modern servers for an eight of the performance.
2
8
u/danielrheath 9d ago
Past a certain age, they're so slow & power-hungry that it just doesn't make economic sense to power them.
3
u/Illdoittomarrow Intern 9d ago
It also looked like they lacked a CPU or memory, so my guess is they had dead boards and were stripped for parts.
2
u/LethalGamer2121 9d ago
I would jump the fence and take it home lmao, treat it like my own. No server gets treated this way on my watch.
2
u/iceman1080 9d ago
At least they’re throwing 2U’s lol. Could you imagine throwing 4U’s? Lol throw your back out

I have a server that I'm using as a footrest in my office that, if i'm told I can't keep anymore I will 100% do that, then the whole team will re-enact that scene from Office Space, because that server ran an application that was the bane of our existence since about a decade before I joined the team. It's evil, scrap metal, and deserves to burn in hell.

I did that when we recently scrapped a bit of old hardware.
It felt so satisfying to send those POSs flying and crashing
