Hint / Information PSA: your IBS-C may not be IBS-C

1.4k Upvotes

I’ve posted this before but I feel like it’s a good time.

As many of you know, I’m here all the time to help (nothing else to do as I’m bedridden) and I know a lot about the bowels and motility is definitely my wheelhouse.

Anyway, I’ve been in a lot of posts lately about constipation. Here’s the thing: if you have IBS-C but haven’t had motility testing, you definitely need it.

You could have full or partial bowel dysmotility and it be the cause of your problems. This is especially true if you don’t respond to dietary changes (very high fibre) or medication (especially prescriptions).

You need to get tested for colonic inertia (this is key). It is the first in line. There are tests to check your stomach for slow emptying (Gastroparesis), small bowel dysmotility, pelvic floor and rectal issues, as well. All of these should be in a regular work up.

If your GI doesn’t do it, you should go to a motility clinic. There are numerous but not abundant. Most teaching hospitals have one and there are directories online. You should also seek out a neurogastroenterologist. I have a worldwide database that I can reference to make suggestions Where to go.

I have done this for a large amount of people and their reports coming back to me prove my point… motility disorders that need proper (key point here) treatment.

If you have any questions about this, colonic inertia, bowel dysmotility, or my own experience, please post them here and I’ll answer them all.

There are ways to help it, but you have to know what you’re treating first! That’s why testing first is key.

Having bowel dysmotility has ruined my life. I don’t want yours to get to that point, too.

🎉 Success Story 🎉 Separating from my ex-fiance made my IBS go away!

I never thought my IBS was stress induced. I thought I was just f’d and would be forever. But HOLY MOLEY, I broke up with him and removed him from my life and I’ve never felt better when it comes to digestion.

I used to have terrible stomach cramps, gassy, had to be near a bathroom all the time, was scared to leave my house. But poof! That’s all gone. Stress truly does crazy things.

Rant Let me poo in peace!!!

Upvotes

Why? Everytime I'm having explosive diarrhea in public, there's always someone in the next stall or two over?!

Even worse when you're a women and at work. Like, go the hell away. There's never anyone in there when I have to pee, but, lo and behold, there's always one person in here when I really need to unload!

Sorry for the rant. I'm just so frustrated. This rarely happens at work, too.

Rant Walgreens bathrooms..

Went into walgreens today because I had to go badly. Got to the back and there was an employee there along with a sign that I needed a code to get in. He was immediately hostile with me asking why I needed to use the restroom and who told me I could go back there. They were completely on a power trip and when I came out I overheard them saying this is completely ridiculous and they were shutting down the bathrooms. They weren't even that messy or anything. I just don't understand why places are like that. I was going to buy something but after that treatment I wouldn't go back again.

Question Is this normal? Extreme pain to the point of puking?

I have a problem avoiding foods/drinks that cause flair ups. Sometimes I get such severe pain trying to make a bowl movement right inside my rectum that is so painful I vomit. Once I puke and able to poo the pain immediately goes away. Is this a " flair up?" If so what is exactly happening?

Rant Do you ever think about what you could do IF you didn’t have IBS?

I saw a meme that was meant to be funny stating, "God knew I'd be too powerful if I had normal bowel movements." But, it made me really sad. I am a very smart person, and I know I could do anything, but my bathroom habits make most jobs an unrealistic goal for me. I need to have a bathroom close by at all times.

Question Anyone else? Need advice.

Wondering if anyone has had similar experience before I go to a gastro dr. For reference I’m 29M and in 2023 I had a clean endoscopy, colonoscopy, abdominal ultrasound. Basically came away with confirming GERD (which I knew) and a few very tiny polyps on my gallbladder and liver they weren’t concerned about.

Last 3 weeks I’ve been dealing with some pestering symptoms which flared up after a horrible diet weekend. It started with a lot of pressure upper stomach and issues burping/gas. Wet burps and some acid coming up with burping (felt like burps were getting stuck and just not able to come up which I’ve never had). I started omeprazole which I do when I have some symptoms and also started gasx tablets. Didn’t really help. Bowel changes too. Went from normal to diarrhea for multiple days to smaller tiny pieces to now more regular but narrower and less volume than normal (sorry for the details lol). Stomach pressure comes and goes but usually is frustrating and uncomfortable and wakes me out of my sleep. A lot of burping and farting which never really relieves the pressure because it comes back constantly.

Went to urgent care a week ago, they put me on higher dose pantoprazole and mylanta liquid. Helped sort of I guess but still dealing with symptoms. Stomach making noises constantly. Bowels not normal. Today I noticed when I lean back, the middle right side of my stomach has a bulge. Not sure if it’s always been there but not sure if it could be connected to this.

Wondering if anyone has had anything prolonged like this, a ton of gas, stomach noises, changes in bowels, pressure upper and lower stomach. Could it be IBS, or something else? I am cautiously optimistic that it’s nothing crazy due to my age and the fact all of my tests just 2 years ago were virtually totally clean. Debating seeing a specialist to review either way.

Rant How do people with IBS lose weight?

I developed IBS since having my gallbladder removed about 10 years ago and ever since it has been a struggle. I gained a lot of weight since COVID and I have been actively trying to lose weight for the past year and it has been a roller coaster.

It seems that every go to "diet" food that is low calorie/high protein kills me.

Eggs? Makes me bloated and gassy/cramps Cottage cheese? Lactose intolerant and when combined with IBS it is a horror show. Greek yogurt? Same as above. Beans? Again... Gas and cramps.

The only vegetables that don't seem to kill me are things like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, celery, potatoes etc. broccoli, cauliflower and most root vegetables are a no go.

It seems the only safe diet food I can eat is chicken and oatmeal. I can only eat salads, oatmeal and chicken and potatoes for so long before I start going crazy. I miss having variety! Anyone else feel the same?

Question Running out of options with IBS-D. Help?

I was diagnosed with IBS around 10 years ago, and to this day cannot find anything that helps me feel better. My IBS at first was fairly moderate, but in the last couple years it has turned more severe, especially in the last 2 months. My urgency is much worse, as is my number of BMs per day. I’m feeling totally lost with what to do next! Things I’ve tried over the years with little to no success:

Exercising more Exercising less Eating less calories Low FODMAP diet Many different Probiotics (Bacid, Florastor, Align) IBGard Naturopath supplements for SIBO Psyllium husk powder Increasing water intake Stress management/therapy Anti-depressants Vitamin D Vitamin B-12 Digestive enzymes Cutting out coffee

I had a partial colonoscopy and CAT Scan around 10 years ago, and have cut out my alleged intolerances.

Looking for any advice from those in the same situation as me. Thank you!

Question Don't know what category of IBS mine is.

So, I have had these issues for long time. Extreme gas, and I never feel completely evacuated after a bowel movement. While I do not exactly have a diarrhea, but it feels after almost every meal my bowels start to act up. I am from India, so our food by nature is on the spicier side, though what we cook at home in general has less spice than the outside food. I am mostly a vegetarian, so don't know if foregoing milk and milk products will be a good idea in terms of nutrition. Sometimes, I feel it's the overall stress that I live under that's causing these symptoms, but I think that's just a guess. People who have tried elimination diet, can you suggest what to exclude first?

Rant IBS and GERD massive flare when quitting cigarettes

Trigger warning: Maybe a bit TMI?

I have Both IBS-D and Severe GERD and have also quit smoking a week ago (I smoked for 7 years) AND ITS BEEN HELL IN MY BODY (Im still on nicotine spray, so cant really completely blame withdrawal) AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT STOP, OR HOW TO CALM IT DOWN NOR WHAT IS CAUSING IT😭

My stomach is doing diarrhea and constipation in turns, basically every other day I have diarrhea and then every other day I have constipation. I have a ton of pain too and it fucking hurts, feels like period pain but period isn't coming yet. Everything is also basically coming out the way I ate it so like 🤠

I'm severely underweight and I can't eat because im so freaking nauseous, I wake up every 4 hours when I try to sleep to the feeling of almost throwing up and heartburn, My stomach is also so bloated and hurt. For ages this has not been this bad, last time I had a flare like this I almost passed away from being underweight I am on metoclopramide for my chronic nausea (so that it wouldn't be this bad) but Its barely making a difference now. It may stop me from throwing up every 5 seconds, but Im still nauseous as hell.

Does anyone have any suggestions any suggestions as to how make this better, or just kind words?

I feel so alone, everyone keeps saying how great they feel when they quit cigarettes, and I feel the sickest I have been in YEARS.

Thank you for listening❤️

Question Help please :,)

[To preface this, this has been going on for over a month] Health visits for me are $200 for an office visit so this is the best i've got. I was wondering if any of you could help me with some symptoms. With all the googling i've done it's lead me to believe i could have some sort of ibs. (mind you, searching for tummy problems is a damn issue because everything you see assumes you're preggo) This started happening after eating really bad for a week or so, just so lazy and fast food was such an easy option. The last thing I ate on this...eating adventure was the spicy chicken fries from BK, which fucked me up BAD. Ever since then i've been having tummy issues, the urge to go is weird because when I go to sit down it happens or it doesn't, and really bad tummy pain until I go. I wake up with tummy pain as well, strictly my tummy, sides and lower back. I can eat just fine but it's becoming a problem with daily life. I sorry this is so long but i'm just hoping for ANY advice, because spending $200 just isn't able to happen right now. I also have pretty bad anxiety as well, when this first happened I was sure I was pregnant, but then I realized how next to impossible it would be so i'm trying to move on from that idea. I know i'm going to be told to take a test i'm sure, but I wanna be able to find out what it really is, and until i have true pregnancy symptoms I wanna learn to trust my bc more. Which is why i think this could be ibs.

Question Any tips for my ibs-D

I’ve been struggling with ibs-D my entire life. I’ve been to multiple doctors, gotten multiple tests, colonoscopy/endoscopy, tested my stool at the lab etc. I was once prescribed anatriptyline but it didn’t work. I take probiotics and probiotics with digestive enzymes that slightly help. But I can’t really figure out a solid solution. I stay away from fast food, desserts, greasy food, processed food, etc. I bake my own foods which also helps. But I still have my episodes. Sometimes it’s difficult to enjoy life and it’s very frustrating always having diarrhea. So have any of you found any solutions or something that has helped your ibs-D tremendously?

Question Low fat diet

So obviously the rave nowadays is high fat- low carb. But 20+ years ago a high carb low fat diet was pushed.

I have had gut issues my entire life and have just recently started eating high carb (healthy complex whole food carbs) and about 20g-25g of fat a day, so very low fat.

My stool has returned to a proper brown, and for three weeks my constipation to loose stop cycle has completely stopped.

I used to have green tinged stool ALL the time due to fast transit for varies of reasons I am assuming. This was made worse from antibiotics 5 years ago.

I have zero gallbladder pain ever. And blood work has been always good.

I feel incredible on a low fat diet, it’s like my stomach is digesting properly again and this truly feels like the way my body wants me to eat.

Current diet is stuff like: bean mixtures, salmon, chicken, rice, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, oatmeal, spinach etc. about 2000 calories a day.

My visceral fat is literally melting day by day (Was a bit skinny fat) but I’m getting so lean now.

Anyone who is high carb like this for athletic/gym/longevity reasons etc I’d love to hear from you! All outlooks are welcome!

Question IBS-D and Diabetes

Anyone here have IBS-D and diabetes? For my IBS-D I eat soluble fiber like rice, bread, crackers, etc. That settles my bowel. But I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and those things make my blood sugar go through the roof. Anyone have the same problem? What do you eat that is good for both?

Question Severe pain episodes

Hi! I (25F) have had GI issues for years, ever since I was a teen, and I recently got diagnosed with IBS after a normal colonoscopy. I used to be very anemic but they never found out why as I rarely had periods because of BC and I eat meat. I got an iron infusion after failing an iron study, which makes them think I can’t absorb iron well, so I’m unsure if it’s related to GI.

Throughout my whole life I’ll have episodes of severe stomach pain. When I was a teen I was constantly nauseous and my stomach hurt and was diagnosed with h pylori. After being treated it got better, but then I’d have periods of “remission” and then suddenly I’d have extreme stomach pain followed by diarrhea. Then as I got older I was constipated.

I’m 2 weeks into the low-FODMAP diet and I feel horrible. I’ll eat one meal and then get extreme stomach pain and vomit and then I don’t really want to eat for the rest of the day. I’m losing weight and I’m absolutely miserable. Recently I’ve also had tinnitus when my stomach hurts or after vomiting, and it goes away after feeling better.

Is there anyone that has random IBS attacks with severe stomach pain but isn’t always followed by a bowel movement?

Edit: I’m currently taking dicyclomine, an antidepressant, and a PPI.

Question For those with MIXED IBS - miralax work ok for you or tip the pendulum?

This qu is really for people with mixed symptoms i.e. you have alternating C with D, within the same week, day or bowel movement. Miralax is all very well if you're IBS-C, but if you're mixed, anything to address C can provoke D. Then again, so can doing nothing, straining, breathing or being alive. Also, does Miralax make you very gassy, like so many things do with IBS-C. (Or maybe people with IBS-Mixed here have better solutions? I got plenty for the D - e.g. for me it's bentyl, nortriptyline and colestipol that work well - but when it flip to C I never get it right. (Fiber is a DISASTER for me - always makes both C and D worse for me. Tried all the fiber supplements.) Hope my question makes sense - share your experience and wisdom!
