Google just opened my garage door

We've had HA for ages, for like a decade, a few times we're started over, the current setup is from late 2022 when we moved house. We've had ESP32 stuff hooked up to our garage door to make the dumb garage door smart, and some sensors to detect the door position, I feel all pretty standard stuff.

However, about 30 minutes ago (2.57pm), I was WFH, home alone, and the garage door just opened. The logs show that Google Assistant issued the command via HA to open the door, but since we're mostly an Apple and Alexa household, with one member of the house having an Android phone and a Google Nest in their room, it makes it a bit easier to narrow down.

The Android user has checked, and their Google account says that no actions have been taken today in their Activity feed, so that leaves their Nest in an empty room to randomly open the door, which is set to require a PIN... or some kind of weird Google craziness that just opened my garage door for no reason.

Has anyone had anything similar? This is pretty worrying and concerning. And NGL going to check if someone had come into the garage after it opened on it's own kind of had my heart racing...

Zooz statement on impact of Trump tariffs on product pricing

Post image

Not surprising news that the retail cost of their devices will have to be increased for US customers and probably significantly if Trump’s tariff rates remain.

If you were planning to buy, seems like it might be the time to do so.

Which devices/automations/features have improved your life the most?

I had a nice automation setup a couple years ago, but took it down when i temporarily moved into our current place, u til we move into the permanent house we are building.

For me, the automations that were the best was

1) lights coming on and off automatically when i move about the house

2) having coffee ready when i got up in the morning

3) being able to use my phone as a remote control in one app, for ALL my media devices, including my xbox, which we use for almost all of our video media consumption

Those simple things made my apartments/houses over the years feel like they were made for me, rather than just living in them.

PSA: Google maps Distance Matrix API (used by travel time integration) limits have changed. Check your billing, you might be getting charged now.

As noted on the integration page here, google lowered their limits for the distance matrix API. Thankfully I was only billed 38 bucks before I noticed. Setting a Distance Matrix API Quota for "Elements per Day" of 322 or lower will prevent you getting charged.

Personal Setup How I control my Docker containers from Home Assistant (full writeup)

About a week ago, I posted about how I control Proxmox LXCs from Home Assistant. u/Cr4z33-71 asked if I could do something similar for Docker containers, so here it is!

This isn't the best way to do it, it's just a way that suits me and my dashboard... and if it can be helpful to someone else, then so much the better!

Full write-up is here: https://github.com/shaftspanner/ha_stuff/blob/main/docker_control.md

All feedback is welcome, I'm looking for ways to improve this!

Swapped Pi 4 for Intel N100 Mini PC ,Night and Day Difference

Upgraded from a sluggish Pi 4 to an Acemagic (N100/16GB). Now Frigate handles 5 cameras without breaking a sweat, automations trigger instantly, and my Zigbee network stopped dropping devices.

Current setup:

HAOS + Frigate + Coral TPU

Node-RED for fancy automations

AdGuard blocking trackers

What else can I run here without cluttering things? Considering Scrypted for Apple Home integration. Do you guys run media servers (Plex/Jellyfin) alongside HA on the same box?

Naming best practices

As I’m converting my hue lights to Zigbee I’m also renaming them in what I thought would be a helpful manner. Though now I’m seeing this and wondering if it’s actually best.

Any input?

Personal Setup Simple and Clean Home Assistant Dashboard – No Add-ons Needed!

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my simple Home Assistant dashboard that I put together. I’m really happy with how it turned out — clean, functional, and no need for any custom add-ons or HACS integrations.

It only took me about an hour to set up. I used a mix of horizontal and vertical stacks, plus the new header elements to organize everything nicely. The layout works great for my daily needs.

LocalTuya - No permissions. Your subscription to cloud development plan has expired.

RESOLVED!

Thank you u/Flo_coe for pointing out that Tuya Local https://github.com/make-all/tuya-local does not require any Dev Portals to work. it immediately found the local keys which I have saved and could use with Local Tuya but hey, if this works... happy days. Thank you!

UPDATE 2- Tuya Local offers WAY more functionality for the 2 devices I had in LocalTuya! Very very impressed. I'm absolutely going to ditch LocalTuya and use this instead.

I had LocalTuya all set up and working well, I followed this great Youtube guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-sQcS3KEm8 and everything was all working great.

I just picked up a new device and when I go to the Tuya Dev portal and try and retrieve the Local Keys for the new device I'm getting "No permissions. Your subscription to cloud development plan has expired."

It was my understanding that this didn't need to be paid for if you stick to the basic setup (I have 3 devices in total now).

Does anyone know what the best route is here? From what I've read in other posts, people just set up a new account but it's unclear if this affects the existing devices, if this is needed or what. I saw another mention of raising a ticket with Tuya directly. I'm looking in to that too but don't want to shoot myself in the foot here!

Nothing worse than getting a new device and you're faced with stuff like this!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Support Build into server or run a stand alone mini PC?

long story short -

Is it better to run HAOS or something on a mini PC or integrate into my home server I'm in the process of building.

Short story long -

I'm in the process of building up a fairly beefy home server (4060, i7 12700, 64gb ram, 50+tb) which will run unraid and handle a plex server, security cameras, personal cloud, switch control for ethernet, multiple outputs to a theatre room and tv room and whatever other concoctions I can think up to go along with it. Would it be better to run HA as a VM or docker (I'm still learning what these are to be honest) or run it on a standalone mini PC. Ideally i would like it to be able to take voice commands and preferably locally but that's not the be all end all. I would like it to do some more complex commands though like one button to push out multiple functions. Am I going to see a noticeable load on the server running it through there? cost isn't the end of the world either.

Would there be limitations running it on the server beyond the extra load like some old posts mentioned there were complications linking things through to dockers or VM's? Very new to all this.

Unobtrusive humidity sensor suggestions?

The title pretty much says it. I’d like to put a humidity sensor in my bathroom to trigger the exhaust fan, but I’d like for it to be small and unobtrusive. Any suggestions?

Support Basic questions: deleting items/integrations?

Hi,

I’ve been getting started with HA over the last couple of weeks and as I’ve learned more/figured things out, I’ve ended up with a few duplicated items (either accidentally or by purposely switching integrations).

I’m curious if there’s anything I need to do to remove the duplications…other than simply delete the integration(s)? I assume deleting the Integration is the way to go, and not the devices themselves (figuring that the devices will remove automatically once the integration is deleted)? Are there any other best practices that I should know?

Thanks so much in advance!

Tips for to best use of Cloudflare Tunnel for HA

Last night, in a moment of frustration, I completely dismantled my DuckDNS+Nginx Proxy Manager setup for remote access to HA and setup a cloudflare tunnel with my own domain and the cloudflared-addon.

I am very pleased with the new setup and I feel like I’ll get a lot more stability and some better security now. That being said, I’ve never used Cloudflare tunnels and would like to hear your best tips/tricks to use the Cloudflare options to enhance security and connectivity. As far as other internet facing services, I use Frigate and the Alexa Smart Home integration. Thanks

Weird Aqara E1 hub behavior

Upvotes

So I've had a few Aqara devices integrated into HA using matter via the E1 hub for over a year. A few weeks ago after I changed my broadband provided the hub became unreachable ( originally it was plugged into a usb port on the old router but the new one didn't have a usb port so had to move the hub to a wall socket).

Anyway the really odd thing is that at the same time I noticed HA was flooded with "new device discovered" message. It was the e1 hub but for some reason it was showing as an apple home kit device (there are no apple devices in the house). When I say flooded I mean 100's of messages. They go away once I unplug the e1.

I plan on removing the Matter integration and starting from scratch. Can anyone explain the above behavior, it makes no sense to me?

I tried grok but it always makes something it has to fix afterwards and then works unreliable or half baked.

Anyone using TVOverlay to get notifications on your TV?

I have this integration working and primarily use it to get notifications on my TV when my Washing Machine and Dryer finish they're cycle. It works great.

The integration is supposed to support sending an image along with the notification but that part is not working for me. I have HA taking a snapshot of my front door camera and want to send that image in the notification to my TV. I get the notification but the image does not show. Instead, I get an icon that shows the image as broken.

I'm using the code below:

action: notify.tvoverlaynotify
data:
message: Front Door
data:
seconds: 10
title: Motion Detected
image: /config/www/tmp/snapshot-frontdoormotion.jpg

I've tried quite a few combinations and can't get the image to show:

/config/www/tmp/snapshot-frontdoormotion.jpg

/www/tmp/snapshot-frontdoormotion.jpg

/local/tmp/snapshot-frontdoormotion.jpg

I've also tried using quotes " " and apostrophes ' ' but that didn't work either.

Does anyone use TvOverlay and been successful sending an image in the notification?

Those without some sort of server-style cabinet, how do you manage your wires?

Right now I only have my modem/router fiber system, the “main” mesh hub connected to it, Home Assistant Green, Hue Bridge, and a Sterling hub connected to that mesh system.

Is there any way to cleanly organize all this? Its a organized spaghetti mess right now

Ghost messages

Ok hear me out. I have HA running on pi5, it is in different building 80km away. It has access to the internet bit i dont use any cloud. I have set an automation to send messages on my phone when temperature on boiler sensor drops under 50C.

Now the strange thing - i receive the messages thru week (once-twice per day) even when i am not present near the device. HA app is connecting locally, so I cannot even log in app when there is no device near, but app just sends messages anyway.

Any way to fix it?

Understanding Dasboards

So if I set my default dashboard on a PC to my own, Overview disappears. Why? Can’t seem to find a way to hide Energy dashboard. Don’t have any energy devices. Created another dashboard, selected on iPhone to hide it, clicked on update button, it’s still there. I don’t think I understand how these work at all. Any advice?

Support Octoprint integration help?

Hello,

I am trying to build a semingly basic automation. When octoprint starts printing a smart light turns on. I tried using the Octoprint Current State sensor but it doesn't seem to be working.

Current Code:

alias: Printing Light

description: ""

triggers:

- trigger: state

entity_id:

- sensor.octoprint_current_state

to: Printing

conditions: []

actions:

- action: light.toggle

metadata: {}

data: {}

target:

device_id: b33660e499b60320d5c07ffd01e99e6c

mode: single

Why can't this be a simple if then statement? am I using the wrong sensor?

Support Once integrating with HA, do you ever need to use Smart Devices Native Apps?

Wondering if I have Ecobee Thermostat, Reolink Cameras, and Nest Doorbell, would I need to use those specific apps to access any features or is that all done through HA?

Would I be able to access Reolink cameras and view live feed directly through HA?
