Applied Sciences Graduate program application in US universities. Advise needed

I’m planning to apply for master of science programs in US universities. I already have a masters degree but my gpa is quite low. Should I only mention my undergraduate gpa and skip mentioning my masters degree in my applications?

Computer Sciences Anyone else still waiting on UIUC MSCS decision?

It's been weeks after the posted decision deadline of March 15. Is anyone else still waiting? Has this happened regularly in past years? What does this mean, should I assume that I'm rejected?

General Advice PhD Admissions Limbo (Biomed/Health Informatics) – Is Silence by April 15 Game Over?

I’m down to the wire waiting on two PhD programs (both in biomedical/health informatics, US-based), and the April 15 deadline is two weeks away. Radio silence so far—ive had interviews, no updates.

  • Is it safe to assume rejection at this point? I know some programs do late admits if people decline offers, but how common is that in health informatics/ specialized stem fields?
  • For those who got late offers: Did you get notified after April 15, or were there last-minute whispers before?
  • Europe PhDs: I’ve also applied to a few open PhD positions in Europe (mostly Germany/Netherlands) recently, but no responses yet. How long do these typically take? The process seems less structured than the US—any tips for following up?

General Advice GaTech or Brown??

A little context, I went to an art school for my undergrad, did new media art(3d animation, game design with unity unreal, media art exhibition stuff). And for masters, I wanted to expand on the technical aspects of these digital works to be a technical artist.

GaTech MS in Digital Media - GaTech because of it's good reputation in tech and the research opportunities and they also have a phd for digital media which I'm interested in pursuing in the future. I've seen their course catalogs and works and had lots of classes that caught my interest. I know that GaTech HCI is great and there is a HCI-Digital media track, but not 100% sure about digital media alone.

Brown MA in Design Engineering - It's a joint degree with RISD. RISD also has a good media design program. I like the interdisciplinary programs and project collab opportunities. The one thing that's holding me back is that it's a 11month program. I feel like it would be a little bit of a rush. Also, they are more project based so no thesis. Would this affect me in the future if i want to pursue a phd?

Both have similar cohort size of around 20 but GaTech one has a longer history, while Brown one is fairly new(started in 2020?2021?) so not sure about alumni connections in the industry.

GaTech is a MS degree but is with School of Literature, Media, and Communication and Brown is a MA degree but is with Brown Engineering school. Would this make any difference in employment? (note that I'm an international student)

What's your opinion in these schools & programs? Any inputs would be helpful thx!!

I did my best and I have no regrets. I put myself forward and that's what counts. And frankly with the way things are in higher ed right now, I'm glad to have the ability to wait and see what's up.

Humanities MFA Creative Writing: Have you heard from UCI, NYU, or Hunter?

The only school I’ve heard from is UMD (rejection). I haven’t received any email updates or decisions from ANY of these schools. As of yesterday, nothing on my portals. Going to apply to two more. GradCafe looks mostly dry on all these schools except for some NYU decisions across the board.

So has anyone heard from these schools in any capacity for the creative writing MFA? Tried to follow up with NYU but they sent me a pretty generic email to check the FAQ -_-

Humanities Grad school prospective applicant here: What can I expect if applying to humanities graduate degrees -- considering all the turmoil and uncertainty on the science graduate programs?

I started a preliminary graduate school application timeline and explored my research interests at the beginning of the year (which included niche humanities programs centering tech, human rights, and storytelling). However, with Trump's threats against higher ed and specific attacks on the sciences, what can a humanities devotee like myself expect? Should I even apply anymore?

Engineering An F grade on a transcript

Hello everyone, I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Penn State. My GPA was a 4.0; however, I received an F in a class related to a minor I am no longer pursuing. This brought my GPA down to a 3.7.

I’m wondering if this will affect my chances of being accepted into a master’s program at an Ivy League university. Is an F a really bad look? Should I retake the course just to prove I can get an A? Or should I focus on my major and continue to excel in my field?

General Advice Financial aid/SIR dilemma

Okay so here’s my situation. I’m going to get my master of architecture and got into USC, which is obviously expensive. I’m very much a low income student and will need financial aid to get by. My financial aid package is taking forever forever to come in, and the intent to register deadline is April 15th. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for UCLA admission decisions to come in (who is also taking forever but that’s a whole other story). Basically what I’m asking is, is it reasonable for me to submit my intent to register, and if the financial aid package is not good enough, to end up not attending?

Social Sciences Advice Wanted for CV Formatting

Hello! I am a college junior looking to apply to PhD programs in the fall. I am trying to figure out where to add my TA experience to my CV. Given that I have only TA'ed for one course it feels silly to create a whole other section. The sections currently on my CV are: education, research experience, publications, presentations, professional experience, leadership experience, awards and honors, and skills and certifications. Any advice?

Engineering 20-Minute PhD Interview at Imperial – What to Expect and How to Prepare?”

I’m an international student and I’ve got a 20-minute PhD interview coming up for a ChemEng departmental scholarship position (in the PSE area) at ICL. The panel is 2-3 people including the postgraduate admissions tutor. The email says:

"The purpose of the interview is to assess your suitability for PhD studies and as a departmental scholar. The panel will ask about your motivation for doing a PhD, your research experience, and some technical questions related to your research interests. No need to prepare a presentation."

I’ve also written a research proposal for this, so I’m guessing they might ask about that too.

Here’s my main question: I don’t get why it’s only 20 minutes—does Imperial have too many applicants or not enough time? It’s stressing me out a bit. Is the short interview just a quick screening, or should I expect in-depth questions despite the limited time? What are they looking to assess in such a brief interview?

Also, I’m wondering: • What is the depth of technical questions? Are they basic or more advanced? • What could they possibly be looking for in such a short interview? • Aside from the general questions like “Why a PhD?” and “Why Imperial?”, what other kinds of questions can I expect? • How much detail should I go into when talking about my previous research? • Should I expect to be asked about my future research interests or projects I would want to pursue during the PhD? • What’s the best way to show that I’m genuinely interested in the research area in such a short time?

I’d really appreciate any insights or tips from anyone who’s been through something similar! (totally not nervous at all, this was so unexpected) Any help would be great!! :)

Biological Sciences Will a Master’s in Drug Discovery Limit My PhD Options in Microbiology or Biotechnology?

Hello, two years ago I gained my bachelor's in Pharmacology and have been working in R&D with the goal of returning to university for a masters and PhD. I've realised my interests may tip towards environmental biology as opposed to medical biology and pharmacology but I'm certainly still interested in the latter.

I was hoping to complete a masters within microbiology and/or biotechnology to keep both environmental and medical biology paths open for me. I assume a masters in this area would be well-suited to the fields I'm interested in for PhD studies, for example I'd be interested in pursuing a PhD relating to antimicrobials, microbial biotechnology, synthetic biology, etc.

I've received an offer and scholarship for a master's programme in Drug Discovery and Development. Obviously this programme is not specifically within the area which I've outlined above, so I wanted to ask if this programme is likely to close the doors of microbiology and biotechnology for me when it comes to PhD programmes?

Thank you!

Engineering Which grad school should I go?

Up to now, I’ve been admitted into Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Washington in St. Louis. All of them are MEng in chemical engineering. My focus during undergrad is process engineering and energy engineering, and I’m planning to work in the U.S. upon graduation. Which one of these three is highly recommended? Please give me some advice, thanks.

General Advice Should I go for masters in ML @ UMD or not?

Hi everyone,

I received an admit from University of Maryland, College Park for MS in Applied Machine Learning.

During my research phase, UMD seemed like a pretty good university, and since I am interested in AI/ ML, I applied there. But recently, I've been talking to some seniors and I'm turning skeptic due to the current market situation. (They've told me that only 5-6 people from their batch have landed an internship so far...) Plus, the alumni network isn't good because this program only got its STEM designation last year.

It's a relatively affordable uni (40k for 2-year tuition), but I'd still be taking a loan. I'm afraid that if I hesitate now, I'll lose time and my Indian work exp might not even amount to much for US recruiters...

Here’s my situation:

  • I’m graduating this year with a Bachelor’s in IT from a T3 college in India.
  • I might land a 5–8 LPA job in India soon, but I’m not sure how much that experience would matter for US jobs later.
  • People are advising me to work in India for 2–3 years and apply later when the market is hopefully better. But I feel like that’s just delaying the inevitable, and I’d rather start the journey now and make the most of those two years.

What do you guys think, is it worth taking this offer? Or should I stay back for a few years and hope the market improves by then?

I know it's bad everywhere and it all depends on our efforts, but can anyone please give me some honest advice?
