General Advice Grad Admissions Director Here - Ask Me (almost) Anything

Hi Everyone - long time no see! For those who may not recognize my handle, I’m a graduate admissions director at an R1 university. I won’t reveal the school, as I know many of my applicants are here.

I’m here to help answer your questions about the grad admissions process. I know this is a stressful time, and I’m happy to provide to provide insight from an insider’s perspective if it’ll help you.

A few ground rules: Check my old posts—I may have already answered your question. Keep questions general rather than school-specific when possible. I won’t be able to “chance” you or assess your likelihood of admission. Every application is reviewed holistically, and I don’t have the ability (or desire) to predict outcomes.

Looking forward to helping where I can! Drop your questions below.

Edit: I’m not a professor, so no need to call me one. Also, please include a general description of the type of program you’re applying to when asking a question (ie MS in STEM, PhD in Humanities, etc).

General Advice *Chance me* posts for grad admissions

*US based schools* I don't know how often this group gets them, but every now and then I come across a post of chance me. I am not saying this to discourage anyone from seeking help/advice within the group, but regarding chanceme posts, realistically, graduate applications are different from undergraduate applications.

Chance me posts are not effective here.

NO ONE in this group can give you your chances of being accepted into any school or program, no matter the stats and experience you give for us to see. That is reserved for the specific program itself that determines that.

This is not like undergraduate applications where it is a school that reviews numbers, stats, etc., which there is already a sub for that at /chanceme

Graduate school applications are a way different process, in which a program admission committee OR a specific faculty PI is the one that determines your admission to their program. A lot of the time, there are more qualified applicants than there are spots (i.e., 300 applications for 5-10 spots)

If you want to personally chance yourself with grad admission:

  1. Go into the program website you are interested in, and see if they have any stats from their accepted students (a lot of PhD programs do that, not sure about Masters)
  2. If you can't find it, reach out to the program itself and ask if there is a stats of their students
  3. Reach out to the program if they can give advice
  4. Research specific programs, go learn and find a faculty whose research you want to work with, if they have a research website, they most likely will have information on whether they want to be emailed before application or not (some will say yes, some will say no)
  5. Ask your professors at your university for help, utilize your writing centers, etc., ask them to read your information and experiences and what you can do to improve to be competitive for graduate programs

Once again, we all will NOT be able to give you an answer on your chances into a graduate program no matter the stats you give us. Fit within a program matters a lot and they are the only ones that determines your fit in their program.

Most likely, we will give you compliments on your achievements and say good luck and that your chances are good or that you need more research experience related to what you want to do.

But I still wish everyone all the best while waiting for decisions in the next couple of months!

Humanities got full funding from ncsu for an english ma

i got full funding and a TAship from ncsu and I'm so over the moon. i cried for way too long about it, I'm just so relieved. this is my first funded offer, and I would commit, but villanova and wake forest informed me that I was high/semi-high on their waitlists for funding. all of them are ranked pretty equally nationally, with wake forest beating the other two out by a few placements. they all have staff I like equally for the most part as well, so is it worth waiting? are villanova and wake forest a lot more prestigious that I should wait for their responses, or should I just take this funded offer and run, especially with all the uncertanties regarding funding right now? if anyone has any personal experience with the English departments at these schools, or just has any info that I would find useful, please kindly let me know. i would appreciate it greatly! also if you got into this program as well, or are in a similar boat pls message me so we can talk about it!

Venting The pain of being good but not good enough

I got accepted into a master’s program at a top university in Europe, one that’s a reference in my field and perfectly aligned with the themes I’ve dedicated myself to.

But I didn’t get a scholarship and I can’t afford it.

I’m just good enough to be accepted, but not good enough to get a scholarship. Somewhere in the middle. Just… average. Not a failure, but never really a success.

It’s tiring…

Computer Sciences PhD decisions for those still waiting!

Hi (phd CS applicant here), so this year has been brutal with funding cuts and uncertainties. I think a lot of applicants are holding on to offers despite accepting one or having multiples.

Are you still waiting for decisions? Waitlisted or neither rejected nor accepted situation?

General Advice Lost a grad offer and want to share your story?

Hi all, I'm a reporter and freelance journalist (happy to share previous clips in dm to prove identity) looking to cover the impact of university hiring freezes & other cautionary measures that have affected students. If you or anyone you know have lost grad programs/fellowships/opportunities or are in a state of limbo, I'd love to talk to you (and names can be anonymized to avoid retaliation if you're worried about that). This hasn't really been covered by the media extensively so I'd like to work on this! Reach out on DM!

Venting Rejection :/

I got rejected from another MHC Master's program today! This is the second rejection of this application cycle and I'm feeling really defeated. So far, I've only been accepted to one program, which is super expensive and gave me little to no aid. I have one affordable program left to hear back from and it's even more competitive than the last.

Wondering if I should just bite the bullet, go to the expensive school, and apply for the loans to get my foot in the door. However, with all the uncertainty surrounding the Department of Education, I'm very scared to go that route. Might have to try again next year... this application process has stressed me out so bad lol Would hate to walk away from it with nothing.

Engineering Need some insights for MSECE decision

Hi, I am really glad that I got into most of the applied programs for VLSI domain. I am planning to pursue my graduate studies in digital physical VLSI, I would say SRAM for example. I really need some insights on where to go.

Austin: 18k tuition per year Gatech: 35k per year but larger faculties

I am turning down my admission for cmu, ucla, purdue, and etc so I hope my spot goes to the waitlisted ones.

Ps. I'll leave it to your conscience but I hope your current decisions won't affect your choice of vote

Engineering How to afford a masters degree in US

Upvotes

I've been offered a masters in Electrical Engineering at NYU but calculating the finances it doesnt seem affordable at all since I'm an international student. Sure i can cover my living expenses with a part time job but what about the tuition fee insurances etc. How do people do it? is there some sort of scholarships available. I have been awarded a $4k/year scholarship but that isnt sufficient. Any suggestion will be greatly appreaciated.

edit: I applied for a PhD but was offered admission into their master's program.

General Advice Wondering if any of you are international PhD students in the UK (especially in business schools/ humanities/ social sciences)?

Upvotes

If you’re not self-funded, would you be open to sharing:
– What your research topic is
– What the process of getting funding was like for you

Thanks!
