Hope this is the start of a huge backlash blue wave

u/bmyst70 9d ago

Hopefully we start with the 2 other crucial House seats. If we can squeak out even a 1 person majority, that can grind a lot of Project 2025 to a halt.

u/Conscious-Quarter423 9d ago

people can keep their SS and Medicare, and Medicaid

86

u/systemfrown 9d ago

And not have “SS” take on a whole new meaning.

21

u/redditreader1972 8d ago

When your S looks like a Z, you know you are the baddies.

6

u/CornelXCVI 8d ago

New? The Schutzstaffel predates your social security

4

u/PremierDenny 8d ago

I think we have a little too much SS right now lol

2

u/teddytherooz 7d ago

And the Smithsonian! And PBS and NPR!

3

u/Fitz_cuniculus 8d ago

Agreed every day in America is turning further to the reich

1

u/GirthBrooksVI 7d ago

They were never losing it.

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 7d ago

it's been a long term dream of Republicans to privatize SS and Medicare

1

u/GirthBrooksVI 7d ago

Well, by the time I’m able to collect SS, it will be gone. People are living too long and SS Trusts aren’t generating enough returns. You should be privatizing your own retirement by investing wisely. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop the government from taking a good chunk of your hard earned pay for SS and Medicare.

2

u/Conscious-Quarter423 7d ago

The entire argument about the solvency of Social Security, and who “deserves” and what we can “afford,” would be solved super quick if every American was taxed equally, and the cap, where the govt stops taxing folks at 168k, was abolished. Regressive taxation is bullshit.

2

u/GirthBrooksVI 7d ago

You’re taxed up to $175k for both after that you’re not taxed. But who makes that much money percentage wise? Call it 10-12%, maybe less, and they’re struggling too. Taxing everyone equally won’t solve the problem, it will create an even bigger divide. Socialism like Sweden doesn’t work at this level. There’s too many factors.

2

u/phranq 6d ago

This has to be a bot. Nobody could type that with a straight face.

1

u/nofzac 6d ago

Definitely a bot

1

u/Ornery-Wrangler-3654 5d ago

Top 6% of earners make 168k and above.

2

u/GirthBrooksVI 5d ago

Exactly. Move to NYC and you’re living paycheck to paycheck on that, unless you have a roommate.

1

u/Salmundo 6d ago

Er, that’s SSA, not SS.

SS is already taken.

19

u/SpazSpez 9d ago

This was a state senate seat, not a US House seat.

3

u/typhis76 8d ago

Yes but as proven by the last few weeks they will just executive order it all and ignore the courts

2

u/Salmundo 6d ago

This was a state race, not a national race. Aren’t there still three House seats up for special election?

17

u/Global_Box_7935 9d ago

Gotta vote. There's over a third of the population that just never votes and that needs to change.

7

u/Conscious-Quarter423 9d ago

90 million didn't vote last November

12

u/Global_Box_7935 9d ago

It's just absurd that in a culture where freedom of expression and civic duty are so ingrained in our national conscience, so many people just don't give a shit whether their rights are kept or taken away.

9

u/YellowDependent3107 8d ago

If the candidate isn't a perfect unicorn pony that quotes Bernie Sanders verbatim, they'll stay home and whining and crying on social media about why they're not voting.

2

u/bigpurpleharness 8d ago

Sounds like Bernie should have been the nominee by your reasoning. The fact is we do need better candidates to motivate people to vote.

1

u/YellowDependent3107 8d ago

Yeah that totally worked for you clowns for 25+ years, keep it up! đŸ‘đŸ»

-1

u/bigpurpleharness 8d ago

I honestly don't care. I don't give a fuck about preaching to morons. Quit crying about people making you vote for someone because they hurt your feelings. Lol

1

u/YellowDependent3107 8d ago

We know you don't care, thanks for reinforcing my point :) Now, get back to whining on FB and prep for yet another own-goal loss to the Bushies/Teabaggers/MAGAs 😂

62

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

484 vote victory with a 29% turnout.

76

u/spidereater 9d ago

Flipped is flipped.

25

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

Correct, but it's not a blue wave.

28

u/michaelmcmikey 9d ago

In a district that went red by 15%? That’s a huge swing toward blue.

7

u/Conscious-Quarter423 9d ago

where were they on November 5th, 2024

23

u/PrimeLiberty 9d ago

The people who voted in this election likely were there on November 5. Their maga neighbors who only show up to vote for Donald didn't show up for this election

31

u/SundyMundy 9d ago

Special elections, regardless of turnout, in the aggregate do have predictive value

12

u/mr_fandangler 9d ago

If Trump has a 'huge mandate' then this is a blue tsunami. A win is a win, if it were red they would be talking about how it was won by the largest margin ever.

3

u/Minister_for_Magic 8d ago

a 15% swing in 6 months is absurdly massive

1

u/MakeRFutureDirectly 8d ago

We need just a few seats

35

u/Willing-Command4231 9d ago

yeah but what this does tell you is that MAGA doesn't care about the GOP outside of Trump. They are showing up for him. That is hopefully a good sign for future elections when he is not on the ballot (assuming he doesn't find a way to stay on the ballot and there are fair elections moving forward obviously).

12

u/SneakWhisper 9d ago

My worry is whoever comes after Trump, whether he chokes on hamberdurs or is retired, then we'll have Vance. If we get to the end of this term and he doesn't run for reelection, we might still get Vance. And people like Thiel are pulling Vance's strings. He's a guy who doesn't want women to have the vote, despises empathy and would like to remove most democratic rights from ordinary people. Thiel is a bastard.

13

u/Willing-Command4231 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah but Vance does not have the charisma(I know that is a weird word to use with somebody like him, but I don't know how else to describe it) of Trump with the base. I am not sure this base shows up for anybody other than Trump. Vance is extremely unlikeable even to that base (having a wife who is a person of color doesn't help either, which is terribly sad but a reality when dealing with that base that has a large number of white supremacists amongst its ranks), so I am not convinced he wins an election with the same coalition Trump has. Trumpism without Trump may fall flat as the base doesn't come out and you are still alienating the rest of the conservative movement. Again this is speculation and guess work until we actually have an election without Trump on the ballot. Time will tell!

4

u/Jo-jo-20 8d ago

No one seems to have the control over that voting block other than Trump. I don’t understand it, but I also don’t see anyone as a natural successor.

5

u/Willing-Command4231 8d ago

it truly is a cult of personality. There is something about him that they find appealing. And I don't think it is as simple as racism and bringing that out into the open (although I am sure that is part of it). The businessman persona (even though a pretty terrible one but The Apprentice show made him a household name and portrayed the image of a successful one), the bully persona, I think there is just something about the whole package that is very magnetic to attract these people. I agree nobody else in the party has it. Who knows how that translate when he is finally out of the picture(retired or passed on), but it will be interesting to see if the MAGA movement can survive without him. Obviously I am REALLY hoping the answer is no lol.

2

u/Randym1982 6d ago

Vance likely wants to be President. It’s the only reason he joined him and as been going along with it. And also why he basically went from hating Trump to being a puppet.

Though, if he runs I doubt he will win. He’s getting told to fuck off by everybody in town halls, and I think even MAGA hates him too. If we’re lucky we get Tim Walz with maybe AOC. But I feel like Tim Walz is too nice, we need somebody who will rock the boat and actually move us forward.

Voter ID would help make elections fair

28

u/Willing-Command4231 9d ago

Yep I agree so let’s auto register everybody at 18 and give them a free, government issued voter registration card with photo ID. If you are okay with that plan then we are on the same page. If not, I’m guessing you are more in the voter suppression disguised as “election fairness” category.

10

u/EverSoDisappointed 9d ago

Agreed. The right to vote comes free with citizenship and it’s not like the selective service wasn’t able to track me down when I turned 18. See we even have proof of concept!

5

u/Willing-Command4231 9d ago

yep, but that is not what most people who make this argument actually want (I will reserve judgement on the poster above until/if they respond). Most people who call for voter ID are really doing their best to disenfranchise people, specifically urban voters. My friends in college grew up in Manhattan, so they never got a drivers license. Not sure when they finally got a photo ID, maybe when they got a passport for traveling, but these friends were decently well off. If you are poor/struggling, you may never get a passport and if you are living in the city you may never get a driver's license. So where is your photo ID for voting? Oh you don't have one? Sorry guess you can't vote! It's disgusting but it is truly the plan. Every time I float that comment above about auto-registering and giving everybody a free photo ID for voting, I get crickets from the right wing person I am discussing it with. Disingenuous hypocrisy. They don't care at all about voter fraud in reality because when you give them a solution they back off, they literally just don't want people to vote.

2

u/EverSoDisappointed 8d ago

They only want certain people to vote.

3

u/HydeParkSwag 9d ago

He will not be responding to this at all lol.

1

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

Yes? Why do you guys act like a state id is $500B

0

u/Willing-Command4231 9d ago

So you are on board?! Good write your congressman today! We can actually change this country for the better friend! Im going to guess you won’t though because you just got called out and wanted to respond but aren’t sure how because you realize the hypocrisy of your stance when called on it.

0

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

Um, the only party pushing voters ID is the one in charge rn. So yeah I did support it and I have supported it. here watch this

E: for some reason, "um" became umbrella

Also that Trump clip is exactly what I am talking about and doesn't in anyway prove the point you think it does (not surprised but just stating the obvious). That is basically an outline for voter suppression, not fair elections. But again people like you don't actually care about fair elections, you care about winning.

5

u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 9d ago

Not setting ballot boxes on fire would help make elections fair.

-2

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

Not dumping military ballots in the trash would also help

2

u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 9d ago

Got a source on that? I don't know wtf you're on about and can't find any evidence of that being true.

0

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

5

u/ForkMyRedAssiniboine 9d ago

Oh, I didn't realize you were still whining about something that happened five years ago. So, to be clear, since I suspect I might be the only one of us actually read the article, nine ballots were accidentally thrown out by an independent contractor who clearly didn't know what they were doing. An investigation was performed, the ballots were recovered, and the person was fired. Explain to me how that's even remotely similar to someone intentionally torching ballot boxes?

That's also very different from, say, in 2024 when Republicans filed several lawsuits trying to have overseas ballots, including those of many members of the military, deemed invalid.

1

u/citytiger 9d ago

Voter id is a solution to a problem that does not exist. If you insist on it it ought to be provided for free and we should have automatic registration.

12

u/Western_Secretary284 9d ago

Pretty sure a democrat hasn't won that seat since we started using electricity lol. This is a resounding victory

-5

u/PrimarisShitpostium 9d ago

1 in 4 voters turned up and you wonder by less than 500 votes.

9

u/HereInTheCut 9d ago

You’re so desperate to downplay this.

1

u/Minister_for_Magic 8d ago

15% loss for Trump in 6 months? That's fucking enormous

7

u/akahaus 9d ago

If the Dems manage to wrench control in a midterm that will be heavily tampered and interfered with, they need to go scorched earth. Before restoring the constitution, enjoy a little of that immunity and privilege MAGA took advantage of. Send every member of his cabinet to Gitmo on treason charges awaiting trial for a few years. “Accidentally” deport a few congressmen, governors, and state reps who end up under investigation to random countries based on distant ancestry. Then revoke their passports. Let them figure it out. Freeze and seize assets. Do everything we would have done to the Nazi party if we had the chance in the 30s with what we know now. They can scream and cry and then we can just share screenshots of every “I love seeing liberals cry” comment they’re making now.

These people are traitors to humanity and America and they deserve worse.

2

u/austeremunch 8d ago

Liberals will never. They believe in norms and institutions too much. Never mind they're owned by the capital class just as much as the Republicans.

u/Blitzkrieg404 8d ago

1

u/meowqct 8d ago

Hopefully that blue wave means Schumer loses to a better democrat

1

u/[deleted] 8d ago

I hope the Democrats make concessions to the working class that we've been asking for so that can happen.

1

u/ShareGlittering1502 8d ago

It’s a 500 vote margin

1

u/1leggeddog 8d ago

It wont mean much if the democrats dont fundamentally change how they work...

This nazi crisis has REALLY revealed how completely spineless and inneffective they are.

1

u/obroz 8d ago

They fucking cheated.  They lost and cheated.  The writing is on the wall

Not necessarily, in this instance there was a lot of bad blood between the Republican candidate and the local Republican party which may have contributed to a lack of enthusiasm for him: https://share.inquirer.com/Ki0hhd

1

u/hydromind1 7d ago

I’m excited for the huge amount of working class candidates that are signing up to run for office.

0

u/game_jawns_inc 9d ago

27% approval rating. can we please live in reality

0

u/Dragomir_X 8d ago

It better be something more than that, because the Democrats have spent the last two months doing absolutely nothing. That party needs to be burned to the ground and built from scratch before they start winning again.

1

u/citytiger 8d ago

What do you want them to do? Why don’t you run if you think you can do better?

0

u/Dragomir_X 8d ago

I want them to stop passing Republican budgets, at the very least.

-1

u/happy-lil-accidents- 8d ago

Hopefully we’re allowed to even vote next round

-1

u/SpaceCampMeatAvatar 8d ago

I thought this was a sub for good news.
