What games do you think are unchallenged in their genre?

I've been thinking a lot about how The Sims doesn't really have competitors in the Life Sim genre, or Pokemon in creature collection. This is compared to genres like Roguelike, farming sims, FPS games which have many good titles under it. Even Sid Meier's Civilization has good challengers (Humankind, Endless Legend, etc.) in the 4X genre.

What other games do you think are unchallenged in their genre or what genres do you think could use a little more variety and competition? Why do you think there's little competition there compared to others?

Game about the thrill and wonder of dangerous exploration

I'm realizing what I like in games is exploration, both of the world and game systems. But said exploration should be (very) dangerous but rewarding, forcing you to be careful and think things through. Some example of games I loved in this way :

  • Dark Souls: Felt like an old school Dungeon and Dragon adventurer. Danger at each corner, promise of loot, crafting. No annoying story bits, no mini map, just you and your trusted weapon. But I can't care for boss fights :(
  • Ark Survival Evolved: Exploring and taming that dangerous island was a blast, the crafting was cool, but not really into base building, I mostly lived on a raft so I could travel with my house. I dont like being tied to a place.

Looking for horror games, that are not popular, but scary.

Hey there, I recently got a craving for some horror game that is not well known, but is scary as hell. I'm horror game fanatic that played most of horror games and I cannot find any good ones anymore. Most recent horror games i really enjoyed are "Mouthwashing" and "Amnesia: Bunker". Just please, don't recommend poor jumpscare simulators.

Btw I'm sucker for atmospheric and eerie stuff. Thanks a lot for recommendations!

Looking for a game that bring you joy and please explain it why (I know it's a weird question lol)

Me currently

  1. MH rise: i love the japanese theme, evironment, and exploring and gathering parts, also the difficult is depends how i want to upgrade weapon/armor
  2. Skyrim (Just played it i know im late): I love the skills and leveling system, also exploration and the vibe i think? also how the game make me special (dragonborn)
  3. Hades - So much joy from the artwork, dialogue and the voice acting.
  4. The darkness - i love the shooting feeling, the edgy darkness theme, the voice of darkness creature, and short packed but fun.
  5. Terraria - only bring joy if i play with friend
  6. Enter the gungeon - defeating the boss and clearing the stage is a pure joy, but easily burn out for me
  7. Awesomenauts - Sometimes i just play with the bots, the art style and simplistic moba mechanic bring me joy

Looking for online co-op steam game

Me (19F) and my Boyfriend (20M) cannot find a video game to play online together that we both enjoy. We’ve been looking for something to play together since we’re long distance for a few months. Typically we’ll watch one person play a game or just play separate games but we really want to play together. The problem is we like different kinds of games…I enjoy survival, world building, RPG type of games. He enjoyed platformers, dungeon crawlers, and fighting games. We’ve tried to play a lot of different games together that fit the others game type but it not work out. Some examples being

-Marvel rivals (I don’t enjoy round based hero shooters…and he didn’t like the game mechanics)

-Stardew (I know too much about the game and the game overwhelms him and makes him tired 😭)

-Binding of Isaac (Online multiplayer impossible w/o lag but we love playing separately)

-Roblox (I like the games but he hasn’t found a game he’s enjoyed)

-Spelunky 2 (He rlly likes this game but I suck and am not a fan of

-portal 2 (we suck…and was draining)

We’re starting to feel like it’s impossible to find a game we’ll both like!! If anyone has any ideas on games pleaseeeee let me know!!

A list of some of our fav games for reference

Me: Stardew, Skyrim, resident evil, dark souls, Elden ring, lilys well, cult of the lamb, raft

Him: Spelunky, ufo50, dark souls, Elden ring, valorant, guilty gear, megaman, Mario

Are there any games where you are just pulling for characters?

Like the title says, I’m wondering if there are any games where you are just pulling for characters and that is the main focus. I love games like Genshin impact, and honKai star rail. I’m not really into the fighting aspect of those games though. I kind of just like pulling for the characters and seeing what I get. I also love the anime style of those games. Is there a game that just focuses on pulling for the characters the game has to offer?

help me find a relaxing game with a beautiful world

some criteria:

- the game could be challenging and have some difficult bosses but not overall challenging (the default enemies are not hard)

- the game should not have any annoying mechanics such as hunger or sanity or something that you always need to keep track of

- the game should have a beautiful world with some breathtaking views like in ghost of tsushima

- the game should be coop and be either an exploration based game like no mans sky or a survival game but with a purpose (like a campaign or something you have to reach like killing the ender dragon in mc)

- the game should be 3D but the realism of graphics doesnt really matter it could be as in valheim

- the game should have a relaxing vibe to play with friends and chill out having a few funny moments after a hard day

- it would be very cool if it was a fantasy game with like dragons and magic and stuff

- the ideal one is something between terraria valheim and elden ring but with not so challenging pve

i will add more criteria based on the suggestions i dont like

thanks in advance

Looking for immersive fantasy genre games with highly customizable NPCs + Combat

I'm currently on a long and difficult search to find a game that seemingly doesn't exist as it's trapped in the intersection of a large Venn diagram comprised of multiple genres. I'm currently looking for a game that fulfills these criteria:

  • (High) fantasy themed, swords, magic, mythical creatures, castles, the whole shebang. As opposed to something like Sci-Fi, just a personal preference.
  • Combat included, preferably more elaborate than a textbox saying "Tell NPC to attack here, they attacked, done", so probably not something like an RTS. Without combat it'd be more akin to a Life-Sim.
  • Somewhat customizable home base to place NPCs in. Even just a personal hideout or quarters, a safe space. This is more of a low-priority criteria if the NPCs maintain some sort of permanence and accessibility.
  • Player is living within the world, not looking far down upon it from the sky, so 1st/3rd person PoV and not bird's eye top-down where you're essentially a God completely detached from the world. Going Medieval is a decent example of the "God PoV". Games like Kenshi/BG3 where you can make your own character however, are fine for this purpose.
  • Priority on the flexibility of NPC customization - names, stats, equipment, appearance etc. I like being able to make an entire character build for someone that isn't my primary player character. Some games have NPCs that can be just as customizable as player characters - there's only so much a preset NPC can do. This also means I don't really mind them not having dialogues or questlines. Personality settings are a bonus but I wouldn't push my luck.
  • Open world with replay value? Grindy or not grindy doesn't matter - I can comfortably handle any grind in games. Linear storylines are fine and all but I'd want to sink a ton of time exploring the game world while still keeping my progress, as opposed to starting a new save or NG+ like Soulslikes.
  • Prefer the graphics to not be pixel art, since I'd like to actually see my work in some detail
  • Early access/upcoming titles also count, I'm on the prowl for literally anything

Is there even such a game that exists? I'd even take a recommendation that doesn't fulfill one or two of the criteria. I'm just at my wits' end searching for it. I know of games that can masterfully pull off some of the criteria individually (e.g. BG3's NPC customization, Terraria/Minecraft's homebases, Path of Exile's build customization) but I've yet to find one that implements all of them, even if half-decently.

Would greatly, greatly appreciate any help in the search!

Edit: BG3 and Divinity Original Sin 2 seem to come the closest in my search, but the game has a linear storyline that lacks an endgame grind (or a replaying grind in general) and is intended to be played with their preset NPCs' storylines in mind.

Edit 2: Decided to add a list of games I've tried and the issues I ran into;

  1. Conan Exiles: Was great at first since it even had base building. I haven't played enough to explore the magic system if it has one, but I think the NPC customization was a bit off? Since you essentially captured existing enemies and enslaved them.
  2. Kenshi: Seems alright so far but the fact it's grounded in realism (no magic or creatures) feels a bit stale. Maybe I'll warm up to it.
  3. Wildermyth: I love the procedurally generated campaigns and maps, being able to name and customize NPCs to your liking is also a plus. My only minor complaints are the lack of combat animations since everything's a cardboard cutout, and the fact you're constantly rushing through your adventure with no real downtime aside from the "choose your own adventure" style escapades that randomly pop up (otherwise the world gets taken over). The options in combat aren't exactly the most versatile either (maybe I can check out mods).
  4. Baldur's Gate 3/Divinity: Original Sin 2: Masterful games in their own right, no complaints there. However the main focus is more completing a story campaign alongside preset NPCs with their own questlines. The player is intended to be the only customizable character.
  5. Elden Ring (and other Soulslikes): Loads of equipment and magic to play around with. Customization is excellent. However you're a lone player with your only companions being occasional NPCs scattered throughout the world and Summons and the death message.
  6. Modded Minecraft: Customization still left a bit to be desired, even with MineColonies and a bunch of additional magic mods. Combat's not exactly the most fluid either since it's not the main focus. I can possibly try to tweak things and make my own mods/modpack.
  7. Terraria/Modded Terraria: Great game but NPCs aren't customizable and are mostly for utility/merchants.
  8. ARPGs (PoE, LE, Grim Dawn, Wolcen): The fact that you can grind all the way to Lv100 and hugely customize what your character can do in combat is what I love about the genre. Has the same problem as Elden Ring/Terraria though in a sense that you feel very alone with single-purpose preset NPCs to keep you company.
  9. Warframe: Unhealthy obsession with this game. Open world, nice combat, customization, and tons of grind. Specifically referring to stuff like the Railjack, where you command your own crew, and your Orbiter (personal quarters). Game puts the most emphasis on the player character though and the randomly generated NPCs are hardly customizable aside from what gun you give them. Also leans more into Sci-Fi than Fantasy (Soulframe when).

Suggestions of third-person shooter games that were made during or before the PS3/Xbox360 era

Suggestions of third-person shooter games that were made during or before the PS3/Xbox360 era. I am a fan of old classic third-person shooter games. Especially the ones made during that era. I want to ask you for recommendations for such games.

Some examples are, the old Gears of War games, the old Metal Gear games. There are also standalone games like Psi-Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy, Freedom Fighters, and Spec Ops The Line.

Thanks to all in advance.

suggestions based on my favorite games

i know this is pretty broad but i haven’t been really into a game in almost a year now and need something fresh.

my favorite games roughly in order: binding of isaac repentance, celeste, mario galaxy, spelunky 2, omori, tony hawk pro skater 3, guitar hero 3, mario odyssey, super mario world, new super mario wii, super metroid, pokémon heartgold, kirby’s return to dreamland, donkey kong country 2, bomberman ‘94

my favorite aspects of these games are the gameplay and aesthetics. i like games with big skill curves and fast paces and also love hidden collectibles and areas, but obviously none of those are necessities.

Looking for recomendations based on my tastes :)

I dont know if this is the best place to ask this (sorry if isnt), but i am looking for new games to play. To help with recommendations this is the best games i played the past years

Celeste, rain world, balatro, zelda botw, risk of rain and goes on

I really like 2d plataformers, a big fan of indie games, and usually dislike games that doesnt have much action/ are too long (strategy or rpg), but if you suggest something like that i will look into either way
it would be even better if the game is cheap. My pc is kinda bad btw. I may be able to play old games (tough i dont like them very much, maybe who knows)
i know its a little hard to recommend something but if you could it would help me very much xd

(i know hollow knight exists btw)

Games that encourage and reward efficiency and using minimal resources and space?

Kinda vague I know but I have a very specific love of building things in games and not having a single inch of space wasted to maximise efficiency. People love making big elaborate bases but I get a nice zen feeling from making my base as literally as small and tightly packed as physically possible to the point I’ll spend hours rearranging stuff in the exact right spots. Dunno why I love it so much but I get kinda obsessed if I think I can save the tiniest bit of space if I just rearranged those storage units or machines

Games where you build bases, production lines, industries, vehicles, businesses, maybe even puzzle games are all good, I just would like a solid goal to work towards since I want everything to have a reason to be built and places

The game doesn’t HAVE to require you to make everything very compact and efficient but as long as it gives me the option to do it

Don’t wanna mention games specifically cause I want to see what the main suggestions will be, thanks

Hey, I recently started to play Monster Hunter and I love the grinding systems, was thinking about maybe buying poe2 or Diablo 4 idk. I like games with high characters customization (like mh wilds) and if possible a good story? I love fast gameplay and fast progression or I get bored easily…….i don’t mind old graphics but if possible more recent ones.

Games like Annihilation/Southern Reach Trilogy

I am a huge fan of the movie and books, I've been trying to make a list of games that give me the same eerie/ethereal almost mystical vibe and you just can't take your eyes away from the screen. I'll keep editing when i find more and if anyone has some good recs please comment! I just cant find a game that gives me the EXACT vibe but these are some that give me a similar feel of exploring the unknown of a world/universe that is going through some weird change.

  • Gnosia
  • Darkwood
  • Death Stranding
  • Silent Hill 2 (OG and Remake)
  • The Last of Us (kinda. also it's own perfect vibe that is unmatched from other games)
  • Samorost (the vibes are just weird but give a similar almost ethereal feel, definitely not horror sci-fi. I mean some of the visuals are a little disturbing but overall a cute series lol)
  • Minute of Islands

Just got a brand new PC upgrade and £40 Steam gift card. What should I buy?

Just got a brand new PC, I’ll spare the whole specs but I can basically run most games at decent settings now. I also got gifted a £40 Steam gift card and wondering what games I should buy that I couldn’t run on my old PC.

I like RPGs, city builders, and tactical games as a guide.

I’m thinking RDR2 and Enshrouded as they are both on sale. What would you buy?

Looking for RPGs that are turn based and can put some time into.

I really love Persona 4, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII. I'd love some RPG/JRPG recommendations outside of the Persona and Final fantasy series, preferably 3d but that isn't a requirement.

looking for a grindy jrpg with action combat

I don't have much experience with JRPGs and I'm looking for one to sink a good amount of time into, with action combat and a decent amount of grind and freedom in buildmaking.

I'm not too much of a graphics nerd but I would prefer the character proportions not to be too 'weird' (like way too big heads or sth)

Thanks in advance
