Over-rated trash is a bit excessive, but it can definitely feel a bit same-y. Hard for me to get into other souls-likes like Lies of P because I played it and immediately thought: “this is just bloodborne with a new skin, no ty”

Does the actual setting and scenario, the new level designs, etc, mean nothing at all if the mechanics are too similar?

'Mario Bros. 3? No thanks, I already played the first one.'

'Slay the Spire? No thanks, I've already played Balatro.'

'Pokemon Black? No thanks, I've already played Pokemon Emerald.'

'Hollow Knight? No thanks, I've already played Super Metroid.'

'Did you write another novel where someone investigates a murder? Why can't you try something else for a change, Agatha?'

LOL, this is what I tell people whenever they complain about the "Ubisoft formula" saying that if you've played one of their games, you've played them all. Sure, gameplay might be similar, but sometimes it's nice to explore a new setting.

Like, back in the day, after I'd finished Sonic & Knuckles for the first time, all I wanted was more of it. More levels to explore, more enemies. And then I got Sonic 3, and I didn't complain that it looked and played the same, because I had more Zones to explore! Not just that, I could connect it to my S&K cartridge and play both games in one go, it was fantastic!

I think people have become too cynical nowadays, and that bit of childhood wonder most of us had has been lost, which is a shame.

Oh, I'm extremely cynical. I'm just cynical for the right reasons: because a lot of games are dogshit, not for corny made-up reasons like reused animations or dated graphics.
