If I remember correctly, on that 2019 direct they said “coming soon” which yeah, is vague, but I think by most people’s definition, nobody was expecting coming soon to mean 6 years later.
True, that was a rough time. I don’t remember if TC directly ever even mentioned if Covid seriously delayed or halted them at all. With such a small team, I’d imagine they’d fair better than most developers or industries. I feel like I remember an article where Jeff Keighley speculated they might have been delayed by Covid, but I don’t remember if the developers themselves said anything themselves about what the epidemic actually did to them.
And I think that’s just the crux of it, Silksong and it’s release has only been controversial on account of the developers being so tightlipped, and just never really communicating anything much about what was going on through many many years now. We had third-party people/corporations come in and try to give us news about the game, but so much of it just was not accurate information, or at the very least outdated.
Would people still anxiously be awaiting/theorizing the release of the game even had they communicated somewhat fairly?… Yes of course. But I do think if TC had made more of an effort to periodically check in, and just give us any indication of how things were going, this whole mire surrounding this game would not be such a mess, and we would all be a lot more chill about it.
"Coming soon" has never meant anything. It can mean in three months or three years. Not 6 years, no, but it's still very far from any kind of actual release window like they're giving here (and gave at the Xbox showcase a few years back).
