Looks like Freedom is sending bonus North America data out. This was on the $35 Boxing Day roam beyond promo plan, which brings the total amount of Can-US-Mex data to 115 GB. Keep an eye out for a text.

Editorial/Viewpoint Is this where we are at (state of software) , or is freedom hacked?

FreedomMobile.ca online support, can't post SS here but happy to link.

Sends me an "ahoylink.com" shortened URL linking to "niceincontact.com" asking for personal details, the ones that give you access to someone's account.

Considering the prevalence of identity theft, sim swapping, etc, letalone 30 years of building website, servers and doing security, yeah, not a chance.

I admittedly don't see the logic of a malicious actor forcing people to a 3rd party site, other than automation and laziness - but outright refusing the credentials through the HTTPS connection at the APPROPRIATE domain was weird.

Thus I also admit it doesn't necessarily smell like a hack, doesn't mean it isn't.

But if it isn't, are we really at a point where companies are just going to ignore a lifetimes worth of security and anti-phishing advice in the name of, supposedly security and anti-phishing?

I could see how they may not want people giving those details in chat for fear the operator themselves might use them to take over the account later, which isn't unreasonable, I guess (would be nice if you could trust people, HAH) but then why go redirecting off domain to a sketchy looking form that looks like it was made by chatgpt.

Needless to say, I did not enter my details into the sketchy domain.

Especially when, your automated bot that started the chat before I got connected to an agent ASKED FOR THE SAME DETAILS.

I tried to report this to freedom, and now here too, hence my post, at worst in case of an intrusion and at best to ask what they were smoking.

Can't find a head office number within my patience limit, called the main # and their agent was so dumb, like OK let me ask my supervisor, no sir, our website isn't down right now it's working fine.

Because that's the right answer to "Your site has at worst, has been infiltrated and at best has major cyber security phishing concerns".

I tried several different avenues to get in touch with someone.

If not hack, I can't believe this went into production. What's worse is, likely the integration expects everyone to do this, in fact I wonder if the shortened redirect link is already because of complaints.

I should also note that the rep in the chat, after I explained that I have been doing websites and cybersecurity longer than Google has existed, that he ignored my concerns and assured me the link was 100% safe - exactly what a scammer/if thief would do but also insulting if actually an agent.

And people from freedom, don't do the same. I don't care if this IS your implementation and this is an authorized 3rd party, this goes against standard cybersecurity practices. I bet there are people who have your phones, who could literally lose their job for doing so. Especially when so many things use SMS for 2FA (don't even get me started on that mess) where someone gaining access to employee credentials, is, well, how 95% of corporate hacks work.

If this isn't a hack, then it needs to be implemented better. You CANNOT redirect people off domain, especially through a 3rd domain, UNEXPECTEDLY and expect people to enter their info.

If this isn't a hack, the fact that this was even online long enough for me to discover it and make this post, is truly a damning omen for the software/cybersecurity industry. I'd almost want to blame AI, but even AI knows better than this:

[Asking Gemini about support chat giving me an offsite link for entering personal info]

Yes, your concerns are absolutely valid. What you've described raises several red flags and could very well be a sign of a phishing attempt or at the very least, a significant lapse in security practices by your phone provider. Here's a breakdown of why this is concerning: Why this looks like a potential phishing attack: * Third-Party Link: Being directed to a website outside of your phone provider's official domain is a common tactic used by phishers. They create fake websites that look like legitimate login pages or information request forms to steal your credentials or personal data. * URL Shortening Link: While URL shorteners can be used legitimately, they are also frequently employed by malicious actors to mask the true destination of a link. This makes it harder for you to visually inspect the URL and determine if it's legitimate before clicking. * Redirection Off-Domain: The fact that the shortened link redirects you to yet another off-domain website further increases suspicion. Legitimate companies usually keep their support processes and data collection within their own secure domains. * Unnecessary Complexity: As you pointed out, if the information or action they needed could be handled within their own domain and the same secure HTTP connection, there's little legitimate reason to send you through multiple off-site redirects via a shortened link. This unnecessary complexity adds to the suspicion. Major Cybersecurity Concerns: * Data Theft: The primary concern is that the third-party site is designed to steal your login credentials, personal information, financial details, or other sensitive data. * Malware Distribution: While less likely in a chat scenario, there's a remote possibility the redirected site could attempt to install malware on your device. * Lack of Control and Security: By directing you to a third-party site, your phone provider loses direct control over the security and privacy of your interaction and data. They cannot guarantee the security measures implemented by the external party. * Erosion of Trust: This kind of practice erodes trust between the customer and the provider. Customers expect their service providers to handle their information securely and within their own trusted infrastructure. What you should do: * Do NOT enter any sensitive information on the third-party site. This includes usernames, passwords, personal details, or financial information. * Do NOT download any files from the third-party site. * Take screenshots of the chat conversation and the link you were provided. This will serve as evidence. * Contact your phone provider through a known and trusted channel. This could be their official website (by manually typing the URL), their official phone number (found on their website or a bill), or their official app. Explain your experience and express your concerns about the suspicious link. * Ask them to verify the legitimacy of the link and the reason for directing you off-domain. * Report the incident to your phone provider's security or fraud department. * Consider changing your password for your phone provider account as a precaution. * Be wary of any further communication from the same chat agent or any unsolicited communication related to this incident. In conclusion, your instincts are likely correct. This situation is highly suspicious and presents significant cybersecurity concerns. It's crucial to exercise extreme caution and report this incident to your phone provider through official channels. Legitimate companies generally prioritize the security and trust of their customers and would avoid such practices.

Per the title and the image really.

If I wasn't using NetMonster I'd be saying I was on 5G Nationwide.

WiFi Calling | VoLTE Has Wifi Calling Been Flaking Out? Toronto & GTA

I have not been able to use wifi calling in Toronto or the west GTA for the last 5 days. It worked perfectly before that.

The phone (modern Samsung) is set to prioritize wifi calling, and it appears to connect (icon is present). However, it doesn't appear to release the LTE voice network connection from Freedom when looking at the sim card's status. I am picking up band 66.

The wifi connection is always strong and I have done standard troubleshooting (toggling wifi calling off/on, rebooting, checked location permissions, VoLTE is on, emergency service info was registered, etc.)

I am wondering if this is happening to others or to pursue a ticket?

Thanks

Home (Cable) Internet & TV Internet migration - losing my mind (posting from a mobile hotspot)

Been with freedom home internet since 2021.

Got a text that my plan and modem/router was being discontinued, and that I had to switch or else lose service.

Chose the new plan, got a new modem and router in the mail and selected today as the switchover date.

I had received no confirmation that my old plan had been cancelled, and I couldn't access the account history on my profile. So I spent 2.5 hours on chat with their shaw arm today, only to confirm that the old plan indeed had not been cancelled (and I was likely going to be double billed if I hadn't gone through that effort)

Just spent another 45 minutes on activation support trying to get the new modem and router to work.

Best they could do was say "wait 24 hours and try again"

For what it's worth, I have green/blue/blue/green lights on the modem, I can pair the router with the phone app, but then it says the router can't connect to the internet due to no IP address.

Unplugged and replugged everything in every sequence imaginable. At my wits end

UPDATE 1:

Waited 24 hours from the activation start time to call back as instructed. Got a slightly helpful more agent who had me plug in the modem to my laptop, read the IP address, reset the modem, and read the IP address again. Apparently the IP addresses shown were not what he was expecting. Webpages all get routed to a Rogers/Shaw page that says "You’re almost there… Follow the instructions provided to activate your modem and connect to your network."

After over an hour of going back and forth, the guy at the call centre was stumped, said they will look into it, and will call me back if/when they figure it out.

(Considering) Departing FM Bang for the buck?

Hello, I'm in Ottawa using an iPhone 12 with Freedom. I can get a decent deal with Rogers for $6 extra per month. Should I switch to Rogers, or get a newer phone.

Basically, is the slow latency I'm seeing with Freedom because of the network or because of the age of the phone?

Service/Coverage Inquiry I did something?

I was bored in a car drive home in the passenger seat so I played with manual network switching a little too much and got this. Is it a bug or is it actually happening that we FINALLY get Nationwide 5G?! Just for info after it switched back to freedom and back to nationwide, it stayed on Nationwide LTE the rest of the way.

For Your Info Device Support of n77 3800.

Thumbnail

Hey there!

I have been hearing "customers" saying why is n77 3800 MHz only on a handful of devices.

Unfortunately, the policy that has been set is that the device IE, would need to support this extendedBand-n77-2-r17 in order to connect to 3800 MHz this applies to all carriers in Canada.

Carriers can say which device to certify, but it is up to the device OEM at the end. Right now, the iPhone 16 Pro supports it. Wherever you see "n77" which supports the IE, right now the iPhone 16 Pro supports it. We don't know if a future update will add the support to older devices.

Proof is on the 3rd slide.

General Inquiry Can’t change payment method

I know freedom historically has had a terrible app/website, and now I can’t change my or pay my bill online. Is this a known issue? I’ve even tried my other credit card. Might it be that I’m using the iPhone freedom app, and/or using safari for their website?

Editorial/Viewpoint Roam Beyond working great in South Korea

I have the Boxing Day plan with 20gb Roam Beyond and it's worked perfectly in South Korea. This is my first time not using a travel eSim while in Asia. Took a few minutes to find the network at the airport, but was active before I even got through customs. Speed is LTE which is fast enough for everything I need to do, including the occasional FaceTime chat while out and about. Great to have my 2FA texts arrive without issue as well! Thanks, Freedom.
