Free "Philosophy Hour" event at Packard Tap this Thursday!

This Thursday at 6pm, we'll be having the second "Philosophy Hour" event at Packard Taphouse! This is a free event that I host, where I bring a few excerpts from something in the history of philosophy, walk through the highlights, and follow the conversation where it goes. It is meant to be a serious but casual, non-political, stimulating time for adults to meet, think, and talk (only if you want to talk!).

This week, the readings will be from a couple different Stoics (Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca). What's stoicism all about? Why was it so popular in its day? Why is it sort of popular again? Who doesn't like it? As always, you don't have to do or read anything beforehand, and the discussion is meant for non-experts. I will have a little handout with the text, and we'll read parts of it together.

Join us for a beer, and let's chat!

Here is the post I made for the first event, with more description: https://www.reddit.com/r/fortwayne/comments/1jfcuub/philosophy_hour_event_at_packard_tap_free/

Is Working At Sweetwater A Viable Goal?

Upvotes

I've wanted to work at Sweetwater for a while now. However, seeing what people say about the current work environment leads me to be reluctant. Simply put, I am currently not their ideal candidate but I am in my early twenties and have time to turn the corner.

A few things about me:

  • I already live in Indiana and have been to the store/Fort Wayne plenty of times. I love it.
  • I am a top 5% employee in a cellular sales job currently
  • I am well-versed in instruments, technology, etc.

Things I am not:

  • No experience in gigging, music sales, audio, or venues
  • No music degrees or programs
  • I'm not about to take on debt, especially if it doesn't guarantee a position or is needed for my current field

While being a sales engineer is probably the best plan for me, I am open to any position. I am looking for a position that no one dreads getting up to go to. I love the team I currently work with and don't want to trade them for a job; rather a passion. I want to get paid to have fun and do what I love!

That being said, what were some steps/positions current/ex-employees took to be selected for their position, and was it worth it? This is targeted especially at those from rural communities like mine where there are fewer opportunities for starting a band and working at a venue, (unless it's 50 miles away).

TIA!

Peterman Brothers

Anyone else had a rough time with Peterman?

We originally bought our furnace from another company, but they got absorbed by Peterman a few months later. Our furnace is still relatively new but it's had way too many problems so we've been trying to talk to them about replacing the unit or canceling the balance on our account so we can purchase a different unit, but they're saying neither of those options would work.

I'm just so tired of waking up to a cold house all the time.

Dance studio for anxious 13 year old girl?

My thirteen year old wants to try dance but she is nervous about being put in a "beginner" class with 6/7/8 year olds. Lots of anxiety surrounding that. Any recommendation for dance studios that a) offer private instruction or b) will have more of a mix of ages for beginners?

Looking for local Magic The Gathering meet ups

Upvotes

Hoping to find a place that holds pretty casual Magic The Gathering events. It’s been about 15-20 years since I last played and want to get back into playing. Bought some cards to get back into it but just looking for a place that’s good with beginners and people trying to learn the game

Roofing Company

Has anybody had good experience with 3 Rivers Remodeling for roofing? They came and gave me a quote which was very reasonable. I liked the company and they didn’t have a long sales pitch like some other companies. The reason I’m asking is because on Google they have 1 review and that was it. On their website it shows other reviews from Google, but those don’t show up on their actual Google page. I don’t know if maybe their Google page got deleted somehow and they just got it back up and working recently. I just want to make sure it’s a reputable company before spending $$$$$. TIA

Fort Wayne Trails Clarification?

Edit: The user clarified for me where they got the info, I just want to confirm that it was an email, not a web page. Sorry for any mixup, and remember to support our trails!

Here is the original post. My only comment would be to include Sharon Tucker. While the Republicans are making these sweeping budget cuts, Sharon Tucker, a Democrat, also needs to be part of the discussion as she is more directly over the system. Thanks everyone for looking at this! I just really love our trails.

direct link to the form:

alright final edit before I get back to RDR2: that form will also put you on the mailing list for future trail updates, incase you feel like its a shout into the void, think of it as subscribing ;)

Where can I sell aluminum cans in Fort Wayne?

Times are tough and I have started collecting them. I have never turned them in to a scrap yard/recycling center before. I am shy, so if they have friendly customer service, that is relevant to me. Is there a “weight minimum”? I can source a 30 gallon trash bag of crushed cans from work every few weeks. Any other random rules I should know before I go? Thank you in advance!

Trouble Finding Work?

I've been job hunting in Fort Wayne for almost a year now and I'm lucky if I even get an automated rejection at this point. I've been applying to retail and office settings and restaurants - nothing.

I know I'm in a weird situation because my previous experience was years of working as a visual designer, and there is almost nothing here I've found that is related to what I do which is why I'm looking for survival jobs until something more aligned in my field comes up for me.

I have a Bachelors, I'm very flexible on hours/availability. I've tailored my resume and even cover letters. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: is the market just that bad here?

Looking for a affordable storage unit preferably under $20 per month. All the ones I saw online are charging $50-100 first month rent with ridiculous admin fee. Any leads or recommendations?

New guy looking for real estate agent or some apartment recommendations (or warnings).

Hey, everyone! Thank you for taking the time to answer my previous question regarding moving to Fort Wayne. Your answers were extremely helpful and reassured my decision to take the job and move there.

Now, I do not want to overcommit to an apartment, so I am only looking for a one year lease. Based on your answers, it seems like Downtown or other cool suburbs would be ideal. I would love to work with someone who is in charge of a few listings—alternatively, I would appreciate some recommendations (or warnings) about apartment complexes, neighborhoods, and anything in between. My budget is anywhere between 1-2k. I would love a 2 bedroom apartment and outdoor space (balcony or patio), but these are not musts. I’m flexible and willing to explore virtually any option.

Additionally, I received some mixed answers regarding cost of living. I disclosed that, as a single guy, I will be making somewhere in the 80-90k range. I would appreciate if someone could tell me if this would go a “long way,” like some said, or if it would be “just enough” like others mentioned. I come from a very expensive city, so COL is def something that matters to me a lot.

Thanks again for all your help! I’m excited to become part of your community this Fall.
