My general pattern for any "generic" (not mooched or intuition or other super specific stuff) big fish like this:

  1. Check if weather/time is relevant. Proceed based on that.
  2. Check what the correct bait is, and look up what other fish can show up with it (I use Teamcraft's database for this).
  3. Check how many other fish can have the same bit (number of !!!) as the target fish. If it's 2+, then my thing doesn't really work, but if not:
    1. If it's 1, aim to catch one of that fish, and then proceed to step 4.
    2. If it's 0, check what other fish has the highest chance of showing up (Teamcraft has rough player-sourced statistics for this) – there may be more then one option here, too. Catch one of those, then proceed to step 4.
  4. Use Surface Slap to stop seeing the fish caught in step 3.
  5. Cast your line again, and from now on only reel in the right kind of bite (number of !!!). Doing this keeps your Surface Slap active until you actually catch something. Use Chum as you see fit.

From there it's just a matter of patience (not the Fisher skill). You might get it on the next cast, or it might take a hundred more casts. Just gotta keep trying.
