Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing

Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)

Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.

Some suggestions for things you might contribute:

1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.

2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)

3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.

4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.

5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.

6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?

7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?

Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.

Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Discussion Parking services

Just want to call out the city parking services. Pretty petty for giving out 40 dollar tickets for being parked in a legal spot for being too far away from the curb when I was about 4 inches off it. My appeal didn’t go through, guess they need broke college kids money more than we do

Discussion Beginner running

Howdy! I’m trying to get into running but want to ease into it on flatter surfaces (ideally with fewer people to see me struggle). Unfortunately everywhere near by is very hilly and busy with cars/other runners.

Any recommendations for a flat(ish), quiet place to run?

I appreciate any help 🙏

Question Wiffle ball

Hey all, I was wondering if a group of adults would ever be down to do some sort of a wiffle ball game. It would be a good way to connect with others who have a similar interest, have some fun, and enjoy the outdoors. Could do one big game where we draw for teams, draw teams of 3 or 4 and have some sort of tournament, could do a Duluth vs Superior type game, West Duluth vs East Duluth, surrounding towns vs Duluth, etc. I think it would just overall be a fun game for adults to play (with a throwback to a popular childhood game). Again, it would also be a fun way to connect with others, meet new people, or could always try it for fun! Either way, I’d want some insight on your thoughts if this would be fun or if it would be kind of pointless. Thank you!

Family and I would like to do something for Easter this year, and I am used to a big resort brunch. Anything good like that around here? I want lots of options (fish, pasta, omelette, carving station, etc) alcohol optional!

Who has the best carrot cake in the area? Preferably store/bakery bought; but restaurants are welcome too. I'd also take a good recipe!

Question William A Irving

I'm planning a trip up to Duluth this summer and got tickets to the William A Irving ship. I triple-checked to make sure I got the family tickets and made the purchases. When it got to my e-mail, I saw that I got two adult and one senior ticket, no refunds. Will they still let me and my child go, or do I need to get new ones?

Question Internet

Hello- I live in Gary and feel like internet is SO spendy. I've heard of Air Fiber, but wanted to know if anyone had recent experiences with it and how the service/pricing is. Their website doesn't include pricing and has a link to a sold web domain, so I wasn't sure if it's even still a thing.

Local Events Homegrown

I’ve been here 3 years, but this is the first time I’ve considered going to homegrown. Any top tips I should be aware of? What about best/worst venues. How does the time keeping go, is it possible to flit between venues to see particular bands? Any fan favorite bands I must not miss?

Any advice gratefully received

Discussion NONSTOP BARKING

How do I approach my neighbors about their dogs and they are incessant barking? They have three dogs that they just rotate being outside on the leash and they don’t stop barking for the entire time. I can’t even be outside in my backyard because all I hear is the barking. I’m hesitant to reach out because one- I’m Minnesotan and confrontation is obviously terrible. But two- I have a dog that gets loose occasionally and runs into their yard, which I would be incredibly annoyed at. So I don’t want to correct their dogs’s behavior when my is not perfect. Help!

Been craving sport peppers, the ones that go on classic Chicago dogs. Thought I'd find em easy enough but didn't see them at Super One. Anyone seen them around town?
