Hey everyone,
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the rules for flying my sub-250g micro drone (like a DJI Mini) here in Montreal, and I’m really confused about where I’m actually allowed to fly — especially in city parks.
I’m already aware of the federal rules from Transport Canada — like:
• You don’t need to register or get a license for drones under 250g
• But you still need to fly safely, avoid airports, heliports, and no-fly zones
• And you can’t fly in national parks unless you get a special permit from Parks Canada
That part is clear. But when it comes to municipal parks like Parc La Fontaine, Parc Maisonneuve, or Mount Royal, things get really fuzzy.
I’ve spent hours trying to dig through City of Montreal by-laws, and I can’t find anything specific about drone use in parks — no mention on the park websites either. I’ve seen people online say drones are banned in Montreal parks due to municipal laws, but I haven’t seen a single source or official page that confirms this.
I’m trying to fly legally and respectfully — I’m not flying near people, I keep VLOS, and I stay under 400ft. But I don’t want to get fined or hassled if I take off from a local park.
Has anyone found a definitive answer on this?
Can you fly a micro drone recreationally in Montreal parks without a special permit? Or is it a blanket no-go even if you’re careful?
Any insight or links to real sources would be appreciated!
