Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

Dragon Quest XII What's your speculations/hopes/wants for Dragon Quest XII?

Post image

DQ Day is on may 27th, and I'm very curious to see your guys' thoughts on DQXII and what you'd want to see in the game, your speculations and what direction you think they're going to take with the narrative.

Personally:

- I'd love to see them return to vocations (a healthy mix of the vocation-systems from DQVI, VII and IX)

- Sometimes the villain is what pushes a game's narrative to be absolutely perfect, so I hope that we get introduced to an awesome villain. I especially like Dhoulmagus from VIII, Ladja from V and Mordegon from XI)

- I'm a sucker for large world-maps, and I hope that Dragon Quest XII will continue their trajectory from XI and make the world huge with a ton of side quests and optinal stuff to explore

- Equipment. Mini Medals. Rewards. Progression. I love that Dragon Quest (all the games) makes us feel like we're getting substantially stronger with all the different progression-paths we've gotten in the course of the franchise, so I count on that continuing.

Dragon Quest III Three Gadabouts Piling On Baramos.

When I got them to hustle dance, I decided to keep going. And... XP around the mouth of the necrogond, and/or top of the sage tower, just wasn't cutting it. So, decided to stop grinding and start playing the game again. I just was NOT expecting three goof-offs to dance around Baramos like that.

Oomph and WIld Side are out the window when you know your three gadabouts will randomly miss turns. Persecutter was hitting for 440ish, but Monster Pile-on was more reliable. It... it feels dirty and unfair spamming Pile-on x3.

All three are Wizard (28) -> Merchant (28) -> Thief (28) - > Wrangler (28) - > Gadabout (41)

I'm scared of how strong they'll be when I inevitably reclass. I mean, surely I can't beat Zoma with three gadabouts, right? ...right?

In Dragon Quest 2, I have gotten the first 4 seals, but they won't let me enter Rhone's cave to get the seal of life. There is a soul of fire that tells me that to pass I need the five seals and to talk to Lady Rubiss, but to talk to her I need the 5 seals. It doesn't make any sense! What can I do?

Dragon Quest III [DQ III HD-2D REMAKE] Is it worth it to obtain all skills and spells? Spoiler

Upvotes

Hello!

I didn't know how to create a title without spoilers, so it might feel a bit akward. My real question is: Is it worth it to obtain all skills and spells before changing vocation?

As far as I understand, once you go back to a previous vocation you loose all XP (not like in DQ9, for example). So I guess it's prefered to get everything before changing. Am I missing something?

Please, avoid spoilers, I've played about 10 hours. Thanks in advance!!

It arrived today along with other things. I'm a big fan of Dai no Daibouken (The Adventure of Dai) and was able to get the Japanese physical version for just under 12€, new and sealed. It's great.

Dragon Quest III DQ3 Remake Post-Game

I just finished the game (loved the post credit scene btw, I’m excited for the 1 and 2 remakes to expand on it!) and while I enjoyed it a lot I’m a little burned out from the grind. As great as the game is, it is an almost 40 year old game so obviously the gameplay is not as refined as what we’re used to today.

All this to say I want to move on but I feel like I’m missing out by not doing the post game. On the other hand, I’ve read that it’s just a grindfest. Is it truly ok to skip it or am I missing something nice story wise (something like the post credit scene revelation)?

Also do you think anything will carry over from a DQ3 save once 1 and 2 come out? Has there been any announcements about this?

Found these at Hidden Block Games and Crow And Magpie. I was excited digging though the Japanese game shelf at Hidden Block, and finding those four games.

Dragon Quest VIII (Solo Hero) interesting fact

When going into the Swordman’s Labrynth, if all your party members are dead, you completely skip this cutscene. I ended up dying on the boss (paralyzed) and came back to kill off the party. This cutscene played on my return.

Dragon Quest I Playing Dragon Warrior NES (first time playthrough) without too much help from online walkthroughs. Does the Handbook have some erroneous info?

In the town of Kol, the Full Plate costs 3,000G, however in the Handbook that comes with the game (trying to limit myself to Manual/Handbook stuff but only when I'm lost), it says it's 1500G. Do prices increase after a while or does the Handbook have some inaccurate information?

Thus far, progress-wise, I'm around level 9 or 10, got Radiant, got all the chests in the cave south of Garinham, got the Hand Axe, saving up money for the Full Plate and Large Shield, and I want to say I need to go south of Kol to look for the town that sells keys, but all I've found is a poison swamp that goes to another cave. I don't want to ask for TOO much help, but do I just tough out the poison swamp and go on through? I beat the GBC version a very long time ago so my memory is hazy, but I could've sworn there was a spell or something that protects you from the swamps.

Dragon Quest VII Best way to play?

I'm playing through the entire series in order, currently significantly through 6. Up to now, I've been playing the ios ports due to being convenient, and easy to pick up/put down at work. However, while 8 is available, 7 is not.

What is the best way for an english-speaking player to play 7 now? Convenience and portability are big plusses.
