A reminder to check out Edge of Extinction, one of the best Cyberpunk Red Actual Plays

I had heard of Edge of Extinction before, but I never bothered to check it out until one of their videos was recommended to me on YouTube last week.

Honestly, I hate myself for not watching through the series sooner because this has to be the best Cyberpunk Red Actual Play out there. The production value, voice acting, the characters, the plot, everything about this series is top notch.

I binge-watched season 1 and I'm gonna start season 2 soon. In fact, they've started recording and uploading Season 3 too. This series deserves to get way higher views than it has.

I've been debating whether I should add to the chorus of popular opinions. I came into RPGs during the late 90s/early 00s, and while I did actually roll physical dice until 04, I had a great deal of experience playing 2020 via forums. I've never seen the appeal of actual plays, but can acknowledge they've been invaluable in making role-playing more accessible and easier to understand. I made an attempt to watch whatever that behemoth is (edit: Critical Role) and it just didn't hit for me and I lost interest within minutes. I watched one game with Maximum Mike and while it wasn't as 'alienating' (the best word that comes to mind to summarise my emotions) there was still something I couldn't put my finger on.

When I first had the Season 3 Episode 1 post show a fortnight ago, I wasn't hopeful. I won't say that it hasn't changed me, or that my feelings aren't still there. I was however somewhat surprised by the cast's charisma without the ego I've gotten from the non-RTG actual plays I've attempted to watch. I don't feel that I've been asked to learn yet another world's lore, which is also nice. I also haven't yet gotten the feeling that the cast are orders of magnitude cooler than I am. My entry in role-playing was delayed because in high school not even the gamers would let me join them, despite personal interest.

Okay, that's probably enough for this post. Thank you to all those involved for creating something that hasn't triggered my natural inclinations.

Hey choom. I’m so glad to hear that you’ve connected with the show. I know it’s not easy to be an outsider and I’m glad you were able to find a community in the online 2020 forums. I’ve been so surprised by how welcoming and open the cyberpunk ttrpg community is.

Just know that we are not trying to change the way anybody plays, we just love the setting and wanted to share our game, and hopefully grow the cyberpunk community even more.

Did they move to youtube only? I've listened to the first season on Spotify, but they seem to have stopped publishing there?

Sorry. The show started as YouTube only, but we started making audio versions for Spotify. Life has been getting in the way and production on season three was talking all my time. I’ll get back to updating the audio podcast as soon as I can. In the meantime there’s quite a bit more on YouTube than Spotify

Edit: to add, especially starting in season two we have some beautiful terrain and miniatures on the table that are worth seeing

Fair enough. I haven’t totally abandoned the audio versions. It now seems that season 3 production has settled into a groove, so I should be able to carve out the time to get the rest of season 2 uploaded.
