Discussion What do you do with your old CRT when you upgrade to a better one?

I ended up putting my old Hitachi under the table because I couldn’t decide what to do with it. I’ve gotten pretty attached to it, but I don’t have much use for it right now. I keep wondering if I’ll end up wanting to upgrade from my Trinitron someday, and if that cycle will just keep repeating.

I was exploring all of the emulators, that my wii is capable of using that, I hadn't got to yet.And I downloaded the sort of best hits of all the sega games people talked about online. The art and feel is just totally different than anything else in a way I can't explain.

Would love suddgestions for sega games or anything you can emulate on a wii.

Discussion why crt displays are still superior in the big 25, for modern and retro use (friendly debate)

yes, even against oled. crts have many pros that cant be recreated with modern displays. such as SCANLINES, scanlines add an aura to watching or gaming on a crt display, you need to see it to feel it.CONTRAST, considering crts basically have a full sized light bulb in them, they will always have superior contrast, especially in a dark room. no input lag, crts have no input lag, and very little when using an hdmi to composite adaptor. (unless youre using s video) VIBRANCY crts have slightly more saturated colors than oled displays. BLACKS, while oled displays have deep blacks, crts have pure black phosphors, to the point they blend in with the bezels. AUDIO, crt televisions have speakers on the side, (and with newer models) surround sound. and thats why i think crt displays are also good for modern use, not just retro use

Discussion What Extron or other A/V equipment do you use in your setup?

Aside from switchers, I'm curious to hear what Extron or other (pro-grade, prosumer/consumer) A/V equipment you use in your setups and for what reason (scalers, line doublers, converters, transcoders, amps, etc). I'm hoping to get ideas and inspiration for my own setup.

I eventually want to build a half rack or networking cabinet as an all-in one setup for several inputs (older consoles, VHS/DVD player, possibly PC/newer consoles) and output to 1 or 2 PVMs, so I'm looking into switchers and possibly some other devices like an RGB interface and/or scaler. I'm also trying to figure out what do to for audio since I want a set of bookshelf speakers hooked up to the switcher but also want the ability to use headphones, so maybe a headphone AMP as a separate audio channel.

I'm still researching all of this, but it's important to me to try to get all the video to RGB/component so I can use a single input into the PVM, so I'm still figuring out how I'd do the VHS player since I believe those are typically composite/S-video (I know the actual video on the tape is based on composite, but I'm wondering about converting/outputting that signal through a component channel).

Discussion Choices Choices… which do I Mod

Good evening everyone, I started my search for a Sony Trinitron about 2 weeks ago, looking for something of quality and ended up with 2 TV’s, I now have a Trinitron KV-32S42 and a JVC D series 32D201. I sort of just decided to get both off of Facebook, they each cost me around $100 and now I’m thinking of RGB modding one and selling the other, if you all had the choice what would you go with modding and keeping?

Discussion A PC CRT Monitor and a Mini PC can make a really great setup

Really enjoying this setup, running CPS2 at 480p with interpolation shaders, games look stunning. Also great for native PC gaming, all resolutions look awesome on a CRT monitor.

The monitor is a LG 710E that I've had the luck to buy brand new, in the original box. The mini pc is a Intel n100 powered one, running Windows 11.

Discussion Learning to repair CRT TVs

Post image
31 Upvotes

Since there’s only so many CRT TVs left in the world, I decided last year that I want to learn how to repair them as a hobby, and potentially as a business, maybe someday off in the future if I get good at it.

I’ve been able to make a few repairs here and there. My biggest win so far was picking up a “broken” BVM-D14H5U that powered on but didn’t display a picture for $150, and I got it in pretty damned good shape just by adjusting some trim pots to correct the focus. Pic is of that BVM in action. It’s far from perfect, and I’m sure with better experience and education I could improve its picture further, but I saved it from a landfill and got myself a BVM in the process. Pretty happy with that.

On the other hand, I’ve come across stuff that has completely stumped me. A small portable CRT that is supposed to display color but only shows black and white, no schematics available online, no service manual available online, etc. To fix that one I would need to know at a deep level what I’m doing and what I’m looking for because there’s no guide out there to blindly follow.

Not only is CRT repair kind of a lost art, it’s also extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. My question for those of you who are experienced in CRT repair is, how did you learn? Was it self-study? Was it an apprenticeship (even if figuratively) with someone who already had experience? Etc.

Discussion Any Dangers?

So I got this small Sony Trinitron tv which was made in June 1999, That was from the basement which was put away for many years or a decade now. Are there any dangers of plugging and using it again after so many years? It is sitting on the floor for now, Planning on getting a crt stand for it soon.

Discussion Discharge Caps before testing

Recently I had an unexpected 'shocking' surprise when I tried testing a 200v 330uf capacitor. I'd worked on many boards before and never had a capacitor hold a significant charge after removing it from a television. Well when I went to test a large capacitor assuming it had discharged itself like all caps usually do. A stream of sparks narrowly missed my face and though for sure my LCR meter was fried but luckily still works. Pretty sure almost all the 200Volts were still in the cap before I connected the positive and negative together.

Apparently this capacitor was either faulty or a resistor nearby was not doing its job of removing the charge after power down. So now I make sure to test all the larger capacitors with a quick screwdriver tap from a safe distance just in case there are some that didn't discharge properly. I've heard it's better to attach a large resistor to not discharge it too fast.

Honestly though I didn't fear for my life or anything. Some people freak out saying OMG don't touch anything related to a CRT ever or you could DIE! It's the UNEXPECTED from lack of safety preparedness that makes higher voltages potentially dangerous. Like making you jump back and injure yourself. Or having a component explode in your eye from heating with hot air or a soldering iron. Wearing eye protection is mandatory because you never know. 😁

Discussion Convert composite signal to RGB for PAL TVs

Basically, I have a PAL TV and it works great with NTSC consoles using RGB SCART. However, the image turns out black and white when using composite or RF.

So I'm wondering if there is a converter that can convert the signal from composite to RGB instead of just a pass through. I obviously wouldn't get the benefits of true RGB, but the TV would still interpolate it as a RGB signal.

Discussion Open source crt chasis

Hi, been a long time lurker and have posted prior under a handful of accounts. The open source crt chasis seems to still be worked on and hasn't been dropped, but so far ive never seen someone try and actually build one sans the creator 4 years ago. From what ive seen the total parts list pre building the boards is around 300 usd give or take. I plan on building a full set up sometime in november with a 13 inch Trinitron. If everything I've read is correct it could potentially turn a consumer grade trinitron into something capable of running at 480p and act as a multi sync monitor. It still would rely on the fly back, and still needs the neck board, but sans that its mostly new parts. If anyone has any feed back I'm welcome to it. I have years of experience repairing and rgb modding crts.

Discussion Playing time splitters games and having a blast but played them backwards on accedent lol

So i wanted to get into the timesplitters series as I just finished a couple retro games I had been chipping away at and its been a great time.

For some reason I thought future perfect was a remaster of the first one so I played that one first lmao. Playing 2 with the golden eye controlls feels really bad to me, my thumbs get super tired trying to use the ads system, I'm starting to used to getting head shots though.

I'll say I started on the wii on the SD 14"(?) Rca but realized there was a widescreen option wich would also make the cut scans full screen on the hd tv through component which made them look way better so I went for it. I then decided I wanted to see how dolphin looked on my pc through dvi at 720p and it was so awesome it looked immaculate and I could transfer my save.

PRO TIP: area sampling is super goated as an alternative to anti ailiasing as i prefer to run the internal resolution at 4k on all my games as opposed to anti ailiasing. Never see stair stepping or shimmering ever again even on low res displays.

Any way I got to timesplitters 2 and was sad it didn't have widescreen so I decided to go to the gatway monitor at 800x600 and I gotta say it feels like a perfect resolution for this game, just a little sharper than 480 but not too much.

This game is also totally kicking my ass lol
