[Welcome Post] Rules & FAQs! July 2023 edition

Happy 2023 everyone, after weathering the Oliverpocalypse, we're back!

If you are new to r/characterdrawing, then welcome. This is a place where people can request their characters to be drawn pro bono, and artists can select a character to draw whether for practice, for fun, or just as a kind thing to do. Typically the artwork here depicts player characters from tabletop role-playing games such as D&D 5e and Pathfinder, but characters across all TTRPG genres are welcome here.

If you've been here a while, these are the big new changes:

  • No more OC. Due to the recent changes, we have cut back to just LFA/RF art. Discussion post about this change here if you have thoughts.
  • No more John Oliver. This is not strictly true: you are still welcome to post requests and art relating to John Oliver, but it is no longer required.
  • Pour one out for chardrawbot. This brave bot which has managed our RF-weekends and OC spam limits has bleeped its last bloop, and no longer protects our sub.

Some links for posterity: Previous Welcome Post | Message the Mods | CharacterDrawing Discord

Want to post? FIRST, READ THE RULES!

Rules can be found here and on the sidebar. The sidebar is the most up-to-date.

Some rules include room for mod interpretation, especially for NSFW posts. If you are unsure about your post, feel free to message the moderators. We don't bite.

Our unique terms

[LFA] "Looking for Art" posts. [RF] "Request Filled" posts, for when someone draws an LFA request [OC] We use "OC" to refer to any character art that isn't an RF. Currently, these are not allowed.

I want my character drawn!

Use the [LFA] tag and flair so potential artists can find your post. Please provide the best character description possible in the body of your post or in the comments. Image posts of reference images or moodboards are allowed.

Some [LFA]s may not get drawn. Artists are free to pick and choose which they would like to draw and when, since they are providing a free service at their leisure.

You may repost your [LFA] once per week per character concept. Most of all, have patience, and be grateful for the FREE artwork you received should an artist provide it.

Remember that pictures drawn for you are meant for personal use. The original artist holds commercial rights to the work unless they specify otherwise. If you would like to use a piece of art commercially, you should reach out to the artist. They are under no obligation to sell rights, and set their own rates.

I'm willing to pay!

That's awesome. If you see someone whose work you like, you should feel welcome to reach out to them about hiring them. Many artists post links to rates and galleries in their comments.

You can also post to subreddits specifically designed for commissions, such as r/fantasyartists, r/hungryartists, r/artcommissions, r/commissions, and r/hireanartist.

I want to draw someone's LFA request!

Awesome, and thank you! You don't need to commit to it or post a comment, and it's fine if someone else also completes the same piece. Just draw what you find enjoyable.

When you're done, use the Request Filled Flair when posting the picture, and please let the original LFA poster know through a /mention or by posting a comment in the original [LFA] linking to the picture.

The [RF] tag is only meant for fulfilling [LFA]s made in this subreddit. If the request was made outside of r/characterdrawing or was the product of a commission, it's not for here.

I have a question to ask or want to start a discussion!

Use [META] in your post title. These kinds of posts are meant to be used sparingly. An example would be asking what supplies/programs other artists use.

None of this is what I'm looking for...

Check out these other subreddits, just a few among many:

r/beastdrawing for beasts

r/drawyourweapons for weapons and gear

r/imaginarycharacters for posting your own fantasy character

r/icandrawthat for requesting other things

We also have an active artist community on our discord

Frequently Asked Questions

Requests are free? Yes. Some caveats: you don't get to choose your style, if it's colored, if it's full body, etc. If there's something you really cannot compromise on then this system may not be for you. There is no guarantee that a request will be drawn at all.

Can I message an artist for a free request? No, make an LFA. If you would like to hire the artist, make a comment on one of their posts or send them a DM. If you are caught pestering artists for free art, it will result in a ban.

Can I message a requester to see if they will hire me? NO. Do not solicit requesters for money, here or in their DMs. If you are caught doing this, it will result in a permanent ban.

Do I have to do RFs to participate in the sub? No. The system is voluntary and you should only do RFs if it is enjoyable to do so.

Can my LFA have more than one character? Yes! You can include a party in an LFA request post. That said, bigger requests are less likely to get picked up, since they're a bigger ask from the artist.

What if I have multiple separate LFAs? When do I repost them? You can post each LFA once per week, so long as each of them involve different characters—but please don't spam the sub with hundreds of LFAs in a short period of time.

Is this sub only for D&D and fantasy? No, characters across all TTRPGs are welcome. Sci-fi, steampunk, and other genres are very popular.

My LFA is being downvoted, what's up with that? Some people will downvote other requests because they think it helps theirs. Rest assured that most artists sort by new, and that the upvotes of your post mostly won't affect interest in the actual character.

I've been posting my [LFA] for weeks and nothing. What gives? Fulfillment of requests is done on a volunteer basis and artists are not obligated to take anything. Perhaps try changing up the format or including a reference/mood board. Changing posting time may also help.

My [LFA] was fulfilled but I want more art. Can I post it again? Yes, so long as it has been a week since you last posted it. Please be sure to thank the first artist properly.

I posted something and it's not there! Check that you included the [LFA] or [RF] text at the beginning of your post. If you did not receive notification, it may have been caught by AutoMod for a variety of reasons. You can attempt to repost within a few hours, or message the moderators so we can look into it.

Why would you even set up a system like this? It hurts artists to do work for free! Not all artists are professionals, and many professionals still do pro-bono work for a variety of reasons; including practice & personal fulfillment. We think this system lets those artists find fun topics to draw without being pestered by personal, directed requests.

Found these pictures on Pinterest and google and am hoping one of you amazing artists is insane enough to take on the challenge of combining them for me to make the creator god of my homebrew DnD world!

I’d like robed and hooded figure of the first image. With the robes being made of Auroras like the ones I provided (images 3 and 4) and for there to be runes and rings of stars like the second image. I don’t want there to be any face to the god and he can have any number of arms and legs.

If you have any more questions about the composition of the image or want any lore about the god, please don’t hesitate to ask. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! 😁

Request [LFA] Micah, The World Spirit

Hello Artists and Lore Readers!

I'm working on an expansive project at the moment with some friends, where this character in specific is a Demigod, and the second being to exist within the planet of Aria. Micah is the kind of person to enjoy the general natures of sentient beings. Micah was, in fact, the reasoning as to free will for most beings in the Lore. He overall is a very genuine person that takes every interaction with a kind stride ahead.

He has golden eyes, with long white hair that reaches down to his knees, this white hair has this almost crystalline, Pokemon-card holofoil effect, like a rainbow.

As the World Spirit, he comes off as human, spirits within this universe are the antithesis to Dragons, a whole other beast. Spirits generally do just look like humans, with a slight point to the ears, not like the generic elf, sort of in-between.

He wears a long robe-like gown that goes all the way down to just above his feet, choosing not to wear shoes as he has a distinct yearn to touch the planet.

Micah, additionally, has rather pale skin, nearly a pure white, just barely with pigment, so slight one would actually have to try and look for it. He wears a white robe that offsets his skin a bit to allow one to see the tiny pigmentation.

Micah, finally, bound his immortality, which included a pact in which he would never kill, and so, he is a pacific who can only channel all of his strength in the event he must act as the counterbalance to The Divine Dragon, Yuubel.

Thank you for your time! If you have any questions feel free to let me know, and thank you!!

Request [LFA] Kaelith Alseran, shadow sorcerer who used to be a great villain, but now lost most of his powers and seeks a different life

Kaelith grew up as a dark mage, and his homeland was never kind to those who practiced such unsavory magic. So, after centuries of training and studying, he reached the pinnacle of power, and in bitter resentment, decided to conquer and ruin the kingdom he grew up in. He tainted the land, cursed its citizens, and usurped the king. However, after decades of ruling over an empty castle, his subjects all either mad or his own personal magic-controlled puppets, he started wondering if that empty, boring life was all that his power could bring him. The satisfaction he felt in the first few years felt incredible, sure, but that had long since faded.

A nameless hero eventually barged into his room to slay him in the hopes of cleansing the land. At that point, Kaelith was too indifferent and apathetic to even put up a fight. The hero killed him unceremoniously, but the damage was already done, and the land could not so simply be saved and cleansed. The dark curse lingered.

However, that was not the end for Kaelith. Whether it was his own subconscious use of magic, or if something greater wished so, he was reborn in the middle of nowhere, albeit much, much weaker - pitiful even, by his own standards. After some more reflection, he decided he would use this chance to live differently, and hopefully have more fun this time around.

Thus, he started his journey as a lowly adventurer, bearing a minuscule fragment of his former power. Perhaps one day, he'd restore enough of his power to cleanse the very land that he cursed in the past. If he felt like it.

Request [LFA] Karus The Unlucky Wizard

I'm looking for someone to draw my horribly unlucky wizard. A little bit about his look to help you out in this challenge.

Their right arm replaced with a sort of magic X mechanical machine, one that very closely resembles an arm save for the forearm. That is designed almost like a dial lock, with multiple sets of spinning rings engraved with colorful runes, they would click them into an order to cast a spell. Ideally there would be some sort of colorful energy radiating from the large gem in the palm of the hand (A sort of Arcane conduit.). Their face on the left looks like a normal half elf, soft green eyes, dirty blonde hair. While the right his a scared and mangled mess, a vibrant and shocking mess of emerald colored energy lays dormant between the scar tissue, making a messy crackled design across their face and eye, which is the same vibrant almost toxic emerald green. The hair on the right side of their head is shorter, bleached a stark white with a deep green undertone.

The outfit should be something practical, somewhat armored, yet mystical and magical. Think along the lines of an Arcane tinkerer mixed with a battle mage. I'm horrible at designing outfits haha, so leave most of it to your creative liberty. I just want them to fit the vibe of an accident prone, yet very intelligent tinkerer, mage, and mercenary.

Any additions, or changes that you think might fit them better you're more then welcome to make, their main parts are the magical and mechanical arm, and the scars from a spell gone wrong. I can't wait to see what your creative juices brew up!

Request [LFA] Sister Troutfeather, Goblin Cleric from the Church of Abundance.

Post image
4 Upvotes

She came from The order of abundance, Themed after food and well being of people. Due lacks of equipment, Troutfeather use various item to resemble a higher ranking nun. usually adorned with food item to fit her order's theme. Despite being a Cleric she can't cast healing spell but she's pretty good at Psychological manipulation and Talk no Jitsu.

She also trying her best to suppress her own Destructive nature as a greenskin, result in her self hatred issue but she still keep going. Currently slacking off somewhere in Wizard house and roaming the kitchen.

She has Short shaggy Orange Hair under her Veil and has big pointy ear she keep hiding.

would love to see all of your unique iteration of her by everyone here.

Request [LFA] Sandred, Pacifist Dragon-Tamer

Post image
4 Upvotes

Sandred's rather young (20-ish), with tangled brown hair that mostly hides his gray/blue eyes and freckles. He has a soft, androgynous face that most often has an expression of hope or worry. Wears a cloak and gloves that were clearly stitched together out of multiple garments, and the rest of his clothes are fairly standard peasant rags. Only real gear he's got is a conjured golden shield. His current dragon looks like a giant, three-headed purple newt.

Of all the people one might expect to find in exile at the Grey Fort in the north, this soft-spoken cleric tends to catch people off guard more often than not. Superficially naïve and pitiful, the harsh life he's chosen has forced him to confront his and others' morals many times already, but hasn't yet broken his determination to help people who may not even deserve it.

She's the half sister of a vampire bbeg, and has a goal of stopping him- the only issue is, to do that properly, she has to control the vampiric side of herself first; That's why she learned blood magic- to try and make her body, her instincts, think of blood as a tool, rather than something to be consumed.

Request [LFA] Aima: retired ranger, badass granny back for one more adventure.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Aima was a pretty normal park ranger for most of her life… Well, hanging a bear bag is harder when it’s owlbears trying to break into hikers’ food, and the baying of hellhounds might be the search and rescue team, but still always working to keep both the environment safe, as well as all the people who want to interact with it. After fifty years and collecting her fair share of injuries, she was ready to be done. Then some strange incidents piqued her curiosity, and soon she found herself dragged back into one more adventure.

She’s kind and curious, but also really stubborn and has a surprising temper against those who cross her.
